  • what's he saying in the beginning?

  • likeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee kbieraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • I hear some Greek--"Christos anesti ek nekron." Why is this done? In my church, Ukrainian Orthodox, we sing "Christ is risen from the dead, by death he trampled death, and to those in the graves he gave life" in Ukrainian. Then during Communion, the choir sings it in Greek.

  • @minhali This is done because the Greek language had a great influence on the Coptic. Christos anesti ek nekron is in Coptic equally valid as "Bekhrestos aftonf awol khen ni-etmowt"

  • @Flexituigster Thank you for the reply. It is true that there were Greeks in Egypt, especially Alexandria. Probably Greek was spoken as the main language. The great Father of the Church St Cyril lived there. I love the Greek chants.

  • there was the heiroglyphs, which were the religious writing, then demotic, which was spoken by the people, hence the etymology of the word from demos meaning people. Coptic is a mixture of ancient Greek with some demotic characters. The spoken language however has never changed. Even many of the hymns we sing are the same exact tune the Pharaohs sang in, of course different lyrics.

  • what language is that ?

  • @agitanna

The language is Coptic. Coptic is the language of the ancient Egyptians and is still used as a liturgical language in the Coptic Orthodox church. Coptic simply means Egyptian.
