But Milch either ignored HBO's queries or was adamant about another full season or nothing. Eventually, due to budget issues, HBO had no choice but to release the actors from their contracts, which - with a cast as huge and star-studded as Deadwood, put the final nail in the coffin. Milch kinda blew it :/

I think the producers are implying that John is god, a god or an alternate-dimensional being and tha Cincinnati is heaven of another dimension. That the strong implication. Check out the final episode.
An incredibly helpful and insightful extra is included with the DVD (totally worth buying for this feature alone). It's a filmed sequence...David Milch has the entire cast gathered on set and is explaining John's monologue from episode six (in the motel parking lot) that clears up a lot of things and alludes to elements that had been planned for the show's second season.
On the subject of the nature of John...I know people who believe in Jesus but also do not believe Jesus himself will return. They believe he was one of many people who are sent to inspire others to do good and change the world for the better.
While I don't necessarily share this view, I believe this is what Milch was after. John is not Jesus per se, but was sent by God to affect change among those on Earth.

Has anyone else looked at the opening sequence frame for frame? After the lovers on the beach they flash to the snakey looking frames then a very quick flash of what looks like a guy in a flat brimmed hat wearing sunglasses. The same image flashes a few frames longer near the end of the sequence. I was wondering if anyone involved with the show has ever commented on the opening sequence.

I so loved this show like no other. It was an escape and departure from everything for abrief and glorious hour. I live in Cincinnati and my brother John loves the show too. Turned me on to surfing and the Fletchers - upset my wife when I stopped at every surf spot from S.F. to Big Sur. A great show with big energy, an excellent theme song and great closing music. Did anyone from the show explain who or WHAT John was? I was totally into the show and I could see past the quirkiness of the show, because it was a total original!
someone...PLEASE....do you have any asnswers about who John was? If not, please tell me that another station will pick it up, or they'll release a (DVD) movie that explain the entire premise...Awesome show though!!!

I think the producers are implying that John is god, a god or an alternate-dimensional being and tha Cincinnati is heaven of another dimension. That the strong implication. Check out the final episode.

An incredibly helpful and insightful extra is included with the DVD (totally worth buying for this feature alone). It's a filmed sequence...David Milch has the entire cast gathered on set and is explaining John's monologue from episode six (in the motel parking lot) that clears up a lot of things and alludes to elements that had been planned for the show's second season.

On the subject of the nature of John...I know people who believe in Jesus but also do not believe Jesus himself will return. They believe he was one of many people who are sent to inspire others to do good and change the world for the better.
While I don't necessarily share this view, I believe this is what Milch was after. John is not Jesus per se, but was sent by God to affect change among those on Earth.

how could they cancel such a sweet show it doesn't make any sense... i would watch one episode and couldn't wait for the next at one point i was so enthused by the show i din't even want to watch it on hbo i wanted to get the dvd set and watch it all at once... i watched it of course but thats how good this show is

Has anyone else looked at the opening sequence frame for frame? After the lovers on the beach they flash to the snakey looking frames then a very quick flash of what looks like a guy in a flat brimmed hat wearing sunglasses. The same image flashes a few frames longer near the end of the sequence. I was wondering if anyone involved with the show has ever commented on the opening sequence.

I so loved this show like no other. It was an escape and departure from everything for abrief and glorious hour. I live in Cincinnati and my brother John loves the show too. Turned me on to surfing and the Fletchers - upset my wife when I stopped at every surf spot from S.F. to Big Sur. A great show with big energy, an excellent theme song and great closing music. Cancelling that show instead of demanding a more coherent story was the mistake of the year. Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ!
