@2grouchy1 i like Mr. Donaldson a lot and have a few of his bluenote albums. in re this song, i assume you're referring to jazz versions because i feel Ms. Gentry is the best, the 4+ min. original version (although edited down from the master take someone said). it's the best of the other 82 versions i've heard on YT. jazz? have you heard the version by the late Mr. Sonny Criss, may he rest in peace, that's done more bop-like with Cedar Walton on piano, Bob Cranshaw, and Alan Dawson? it's good.
@salgoudsamoht I agree the best version of this number is the version by Bobby Gentry, of course she wrote it and that would make a difference i guess. Every version would be measured against hers. I never really could get into Criss stuff. I never liked the tone he got out of the Sax. I guess Coleman Hawkins would have to rank up there with the best of them.
ive been into hip hop 25 years, i get sampling but its very annoying on every rare groove to see someone posting 28273456 rappers who have use the sample. its old news
@Wykesidefruitmachine I'm 'bout to do the same thang (again)...LOL...but I seen somethin' link'd to this link to sample over it!!! Like chess...seein' moves ahead of time...
I can't believe this was sampled for Lil' Kim's joint " We Don't Need It" from the Hardcore album. I don't even know what they did to it lmao. If you listen to the song you can't even hear where they have sampled.
Love it. More kudos to songwriter Bobbie Gentry. This has a similar take to rock&roll hall of famer King Curtis cover who took this instrumental track to #5 r&b and #26 pop. Bobbie Gentry's original is still the only female single to chart pop, country and r&b.
Some of my favorite flips of this sample, "On & ON" - (Pete Rock & Cl Smooth), "My Love's On The Way" - (Intro), and of course, can't front on "Jesus Walks" ..like how Kanye used the press roll on the turnarounds - That snare drum is so crispy..Idris Muhammad (drummer) should be gettin' paid for this!
@Eurobubble70 Forever one of hip hop's pioneerin' breaks...I say that 'cuz it stands out like "Funky Drummer", "Impeach The President", "Synthetic Substitution", "It's A New Day/Hihache", etc...jus' my opinion!!!

I think the drums on Jadakiss's track "Kiss of Death" was inspired by this track, am I the only one that thinks this?
