I don't think it's the fact that she's changed that's causing so much controversy. Everyone grows up, and changes as a result. But her change was SO DRASTIC and happened SO FAST that it seems fake. I mean, think about it: usually, people don't alter their personalities completely in a matter of MONTHS just because they get a new hair cut that makes them look like Cherie Currie, or because their make-up preferences change. I'm sure this is what she was like for most of her life pre-"goth chic"

she gets sullen, and acts like she would rather be anywhere else.

Its like shes trying play the part of being a rockstar, but its just not appealing or even likable. Its a shame, i really like her music, but I can't hardly get through one of her interviews with out wanting to shake her and be like YOUR HERE TALKING ABOUT YOUR AWESOME BAND, WHY ARE YOU NOT STOKED ABOUT THIS!? Usually the production you work for will have you act in a certain way to bettter portray the character you play. So it's not that she *changed*, it's just that now, she has the opportunity to act a bit more like herself. Jenny changed, so that gave Taylor the chance to change her image as well.
