Good transcription but you miss the thumb roll--would like to see someone do the thumb roll, which is the most distinctive part of his bass work. I would learn how to do the thumb roll if I were you and it would be unstoppable
Wow you are a fantastic picker, I expect you know that. I am just starting out and was wondering how long you have been playing and if you have any tips on what I should be practicing to get a good start. I imagine you have been playing for about 20 years but you dont look old enough. Fantastic.
hi, thanks chris. i just followed around some great older pickers and immersed myself in the stuff (and am still doing both of those things!). my only tips are what have helped me - trying to learn by ear as much as possible and playing with other people as much as possible. that way you really soak it up. i started with mississippi john hurt and john fahey and worked my way towards blind blake and gary davis and skip james and luke jordan and...the list is endless!
great playing and AWESOME sound, this really stands out above all the vintage L00s, clarksdales grevens and whatever you can see on youtube. (unfortunately this tacoma model is not available anymore)
That was good! You had another version on youtube where the a/v sync was off and it looked not real. I posted a bad comment but then deleted it after watching this. Good job!
hey, I love your playing!!! This blind blake medley is especially great. I'm trying to teach it to myself. If you ever have the time to post a slowed down version of it for us beginners to learn from that would be awesome. Keep it up!
You play VERY well. I love this song. However, I spent about an hour looking for a song called "Blind Blake Rag" and the only one I found was Ralph McTell's version which is very different from this. Is this song actually called Blake's Breakdown or am I missing something?
i guess it's actually a composite of a couple blind blake numbers from "blind arthur's breakdown" to "southern rag" with a bit of "west coast rag" thrown in for good measure...
am much obliged you have responded to my request. a true gentleman and scholar. for you im sure this type of rag is probabaly how you say, very fluent, second natured(if not your bodily expressions sure had me fooled). never the less im captivated. just hope that you to are obliged that im about to study the shit out of ths video. much thanks- rexious
This is beautiful stuff - sounds like Blind Arthur's Breakdown...very nice touch and sound...I have a particular version of the West Coast Blues and some other stuff I'd love for you to check out...
By the way, in all your guitar videos your guitars sound very "round" and warm and un-metallic. Is it caused by the microphone/camera or is it the natural sound of your guitars?
well, the guitar does have a warm, round sound (it's the same specs as a gibson nick lucas, with the same woods used and everything), but i do think some of it also has to do with the cheap mic in the camera!!
hi peglegsam, we're going to start a dedicated "groanbox" youtube page that is a bit more streamlined and not jumbled up with my solos. i'll keep you posted. thanks for asking.
I have looked hard and you are the best 'Blaker' I have ever heard. He is my favorite. Draggin your thumb and stalling off beat..too tight man.

I can play this pretty competently with my right hand, I just have to work on my fretting and with my left.

Is ragtime guitar played in Conventional Tuning?
coolhandchuck 2 years ago
It can be played in several tunings - but often in conv. tuning, yes.
Also in dropped D for instance, to get some exciting deep base work in the key of D.
