His character role seems to be based around chief adviser and military strategist to a noble court; which fits with the fact that deathklok live in a castle and are served by serfs.

As to the reason everyone likes him, that part is obvious: He is the embodiment of virtue in the series. Both virtue in defeating the bad guys and protecting the talent, and virtue in being completely competent, innovative, and dependable in every field that he is required to act in.
