  • Siskel and Ebert at the movies! God this show takes me back to a cool/magical place in my childhood. I used to watch this with my pops and it made movies MAGICAL to me. RIP Gene Siskel and best wishes Roger Ebert. Two Chicago legends.

  • i saw Legend for the first time for the first time a couple of weeks ago and loved it. ok the story isn't the most complicated one but it's enough for me who see it as a story about two young people who's exposed to the horrors and evils of the world for the first time and must grow and find strength to resist it, for now and in the future.

  • They basically gave away the whole movie

  • I love a few of the dark fantasy movies from the 80s: Labyrinth, Return to Oz and The Dark Crystal. I don't think S&E gave any of those films high marks, and I can't say I agree with them, except in this case. I was hoping Legend would be this gem I'd overlooked; instead, I didn't find it at all magical- just unpleasant, ugly and boring. Sorry, but Legend is one of those rare movies I flat out hated. Maybe if I'd seen it as a kid, I'd like it more now, but I kinda doubt it.

  • Most critics didn't give fantasy films back then high marks, not surprised by their reaction to Legend. In general Legend wasn't well received, but it has a cult following. I'm in the middle about it.

  • @AtorTheFlyingEagle I know that alot of Goth types like this movie alot today.

  • @spyroxxm Not surprised, not much of a validation either.

  • The directors cut is a true masterpiece. The studio cut.

    .well it's pretty.

  • I liked Legend. Labyrinth is better but I still loved the visuals and the Tangerine Dream score is wondeful.

  • Can somebody please tell me where the hell i can buy the tangerine dream version on dvd????

  • roger ebert is a retard

  • i am actually supprised that they said this about the film cause i loved it, but it was a little on the "dark" side if you know what i mean. With Tangerine Dream's music and very cutty scenes, it felt too much like a creepy darkly gothic music video, but the Intended Director's Cut feels more like the MOVIE it SHOULD have been, and is more interesting and a little darker, but also very beautiful and mysterious, especially with Jerry Goldsmith's epic score! I love both films, but DC is BETTER!!

  • does anybody care about what these guys think anymore???

  • not sure I get what Ebert is saying about being too dark. it's about good vs evil in its primary forms

  • Legend was pretty light on script but you can't doubt the visual feast that it was. you have to see it at least once

  • This review misses the point. Legend was an ambitious attempt to distill every popular Western archetype about the universal battle between good and evil into a simple fairy tale format. It is a stylish work of art that makes a case duality of human nature and unity of opposing moralities. Jack isn't always pure in his actions while Darkness is angst tortured by his fate as the embodiment of evil. Darkness fails to end light in the world while Jack can never destroy Darkness.

  • Legend is ok. The beinging is good, the sceans with The Prince of Darkness and the princess are the best. The rest of the moive is boring.

  • My biggest problem with Gene Siskel was that he looked at films only the way they should be and not the way they are. I always tended to watch a movie for what it is and enjoy it as such. This movie review is a classic example of Siskel thinking inside his own little world and trying to fit this movie into it where it just doesn't belong. I never liked Siskel, glad he's gone to never over criticize a movie again.

  • I liked it

  • despite admiring and loving the film, i would still have loved to have seen the original cut at over 2 and a half hours...the last few years has seen so much more information come about regarding Legend's production and subsequent post-production and to think that a single disastrous test screening had Ridley Scott hacking an hour out of the film is just tragic.

Terry Rawlings, the DP for the film said that , in it's original form, the film was a masterpiece.

  • this movie is a masterpiece ahead of its time . these guys were so wrong its on blu ray now with 2 versions directors cut and original release .

  • Tim Curry was really good in this movie....as he usually is in movies.

  • The lord of darkness broke Ebert's fat jaw! Fucking Bitch!

  • This movie was unwatchable. I made it three minutes before I shut it off, giggling.

  • Can't say I've seen Legend, so I can't comment on their review, but I just got to say that Roger Ebert is the last guy who should be criticizing films. He wrote goddamn "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls"! Hardly qualifies him to say what is good film making.

  • Fuck these guys.

  • The devil scared the sh*t out of me. As a child I loved the film but as an adult I feel it lacked warmth and it was to gloomy. But the picture was okay, not deserved to be butchered by them.

  • Jeez, Fatty.

    Cynical much?

    uh, sigh: Devil.

ug, sigh: i guess, ok, cinematography.

    ug, sigh: Tom Cruise.

  • Im not saying Legend was a great movie and I love S&E but I think sometimes reveiwers forget how fucking awesome movies like this are when you’re a kid.

  • @Blackboilingrobotoil I have to agree, I saw this as a child and loved it, saw it as an adult and wasn't so enthralled as I had been before. The special effects, atmosphere, mood and design are wonderful but the characters flat. The only character I found interesting was the lord of darkness. I actually personally would have preferred a style akin to this for the lord of the ring movies over what we have.

  • @Blackboilingrobotoil exactly. I love Legend despite it's obvious heavy handed flaws.

  • Boy, were they ever wrong. Legend has gone on to become a classic (at least a minor one) and is viewed as one of Ridley Scott's better films. Remember, they also bagged on Blade Runner when it came out (Ebert even went on to retract his bad review).

  • Gene's wrong and Roger wrote Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls.

  • This movie isnt as bad as they make it out to be. Its fun to watch.

  • Lighten up Ebert. Fuck.

  • No Roger, it doesn't need to be swashbuckling, but thank you for playing.

  • I thought it was boring as hell when I was a kid and I never want to see it ever again

  • It makes me laugh that anyone would trust or believe opinions of a movie from two guys who personally dislike it. A movie will move you because of what you believe and feel. If YOU like it then screw the critics. I suppose then that if an auto critics say they don't "personally" like the look of an F150 then YOU shouldn't either. Plus, these morons have been bad mouthing top films their entire career. I'm glad their 15 minutes are up.

  • @wingmanalive I think 25 years of fame is more accurate. They also have theaters and movies dedicated to them, something that is probably missing from your dossier.

It is also amusing that you talk about them “bad mouthing top films their entire career”. I guess we should have listened to you instead. Wasn’t this all supposed to be subjective?

  • @nikosvault I know how long they reviewed films and used to watch them regularly, until I stopped taking their advice and discovered MANY films that moved me that they recommended for the trash. Not insulting those past and I realize a lot of the head to head criticism they displayed was purely for the audience. Die Hard, Home Alone, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Terminator, ect. Now were THEY bad films? Those became film icons but not if you listened to them they wouldn't.

  • @wingmanalive

Only if you ignore both of them. Siskel liked Die Hard and Ebert liked Ferris Bueller's and The Terminator. Are you going to dismiss both of them because they thought Home Alone was mediocre (which it sort of was).

  • @nikosvault Home Alone grossed over $476 million worldwide. If that was a mediocre film I'd like to see what a good film grosses. I suppose the recent tsunami in Japan was really only a bit of moisture? All the films I mentioned were either the start of a successful series or a film that captured an era. I just found it hard to swallow anyone arguing that. IMO their "opinions" of film was mediocre at best (which it really was). ;)

  • @wingmanalive Home Alone captured an era?

Take a look at the top 10 grossing movies of all time (most of them spawning sequels), you will see a lot of crap. Using popularity and gross when discussing the quality of a film will always be worse than a well argued opinion.

  • @wingmanalive Referring to Ferris there. Most High School kids at that time related to him in such a powerful way. Sure it was just a film about a kid cutting school but on the other hand Seinfeld was a series about nothing as well. It was just the combination of talent and timing.

  • The Lord of Darkness is actually Lord Xenu.

  • It would be interesting to see what they would have said about the film had they seen the director's cut.

  • All I know is that I was captivated by the look of the film, as is usually the case with a Ridley Scott gig, and more importantly, the lovely Mia Sara.

I'd have fought the forces of darkness for her as did the Jack character.

  • An orgy of missed opportunities, that film.

  • Tim Curry scared the hell out of me in the movie. I thought the movie was ok.

  • Awww, look at the young Tom Cruise. He was so full promise back then. Before Lord Xenu got to him.

  • at 2:49 when they cut from the movie scene back to Ebert you can hear Gene mutter, "ohhh god" is dissapproval hilarious.

  • "Pretentious" may be overused, but that does't mean I'm wrong. "What's pretentious about saying that?" It's the tone: "Let me tell you -- because I know -- how to make a better movie." It's the unnecessary reference to Flynn and "the old days of Hollywood," when "swashbuckling spirit of adventure" would have sufficed. And it's the generic, unnecessary praise of old Hollywood.

  • also listening 2 them talk about the whole fantsy genre bein beaten 2 death me n my friends still believe that the best fantasy films came out in the 80's Legend, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Neverending Story etc etc fantasy films now r either aimed directly at children so adults cant appreciate them coz ya can feel ya brain rotting or they are too mature so ya cant get sit with a young child and get them into them i think these films had a happy medium somewhere or is that just me

  • @xandyx21 i'm also partial to dragon slayer...

  • wats funny watchin this is that if your watch the making of featurette and listen to the writer and director etc etc talk about wat the film was originally intended to be (they even admit that the film lost a lot of wat made it special in the editing room) you gain a bit of respect for it am uin the middle of reading the original script and its blowin me away a lot more darker and more mature.

  • I loved this movie as a kid and looking back about their opinion I agree, it was only good because I was young and it had the nostalgia factor.

  • Funny how they're complaining about how much it is the same as other fantasy films. Which is true, in 1985 there were alot of movies like this.

But watching it now when there aren't alot of traditional fantasy films anymore, Legend seems interesting and unique, especially in terms of visuals.

They are right about how basic and light the plot is though.

  • I agree with them..

  • Wow, one of THE most offbase reviews these two have ever done.

  • Fuck these pretentious windbags.

  • @deteugma "Pretentious" = "more articulate than I am."

  • @Ingratiateful Who cares whether they're more articulate? Articulate or not, they're still wrong about Legend, and still pretentious windbags (Ebert especially): "A movie like this needs -- what it really needs -- is a little of the cheerful Errol Flynn-style swashbuckling spirit of adventure from the old days of Hollywood." Give me a break.

  • @deteugma What's pretentious about saying that? They thought it was a needlessly murky film with nothing exciting to offer, hence they suggested that.

If you'd just called them windbags, it would be understandable. But 'pretentious' has got to be the most overused insult around these days.

  • @deteugma whether you agree with their specific suggestion about how to make this movie better is besides the point. They are right in their observation that it is a boring mess of a movie that basically doesn't work.

  • @Ingratiateful Why doesn't Legend work? Explain please.

  • Could these two pricks be any more wrong?

I cant belive people used to value their opinions.

  • 2:36 Tom vs Il Duce from The Mentors. I love how Gene groans 'Ugh God!' after that clip.

  • Awesome imagery that you can see in many movies since, such as LOTR. One of the few Cruise performances I like, excellent casting, visuals, and filmed WITHOUT CG!! Watch the directors cut since he admits the released version was edited different than his original vision. I have been let down by critics many times so this review doesn't surprise me.

  • This is soooo why critics got that much deserved heat lol. This movie has become a cult classic. And critics now have to contend with the fact that people have to use rotten tomatoes and other avenues to determine if a movie is actually good or not.

  • Rob Bottin did some amazing special effects on this film. But the whole film kinda feels like it was edited to death, with bits missing, stuff left out, transitional parts removed. And some of the dubbing was distracting.

I wanted to love it, and these kinds of films are what I love. But I just never got any adventure from it. I wanted to love it, but I just could not. Dang shame.

  • One of the best soundtracks ever composed. Thank you, Tangerine Dream.

  • I don't normally go for Sword & Sorcery movies but I loved this one.I don't understand why people have such a downer on it - the SFX were fantastic and Tim Curry rocked as usual.

  • My God, the different music and editing makes a HUGE difference. Im so glad I saw the European version as a child not this crappy American version. This is my favorite Ridley Scott film.

  • This movie is amazing. Fuck both of these pretentious asses.

  • @rawtheory333 The director's cut is fairly decent, but even Ridley Scott admits the American theatrical release was lacking.

  • Not that I care about whether or not these guys give a thumbs up to a movie but I lost some respect for their opinion based on this review. Legend is one of my favorite movies. Ive loved it since I was a chiild so maybe thats partly why it is so dear to me. Visually it is a masterpiece and the music is probably the greatest movie soundtrack ever made (along with Basil Poledouris' epic soundtrack for Conan The Barbarian). They really undercut this film. They must not like enchanted fantasy films

  • @mystro810 People usually grow out of their need for such things by the time they reach 12.

  • @fernando5821. grow out of such things as what? masterful movies and soundtracks? yeah ok. let me guess, your favorite movie is scarface

  • "Legend" as a masterful movie...

Given this information, I'd peg your intellectual development at a prepubescent level. My favourite film is out of your league, as am I.

Enjoy your prepubescent fare, keep your eye's peeled for pubic hair which should be sprouting up around your kernel of rice any year now!

  • I swear every know-it-all asshole that picks a fight with me on youtube is from canada....haha fernado! I dont think there is anyone in the world named fernando that is more cerebral than myself. If you are judging my intellectual capacity based on my affinity for a movie then you are even more ignorant that you let on.. yeah, you got me, my genitalia lack the growth of coarse hair marked by ones age develpoment .go watch scarface and leave in peace that which you cannot understand... moron

  • @mystro810 Again, even the Director admits the American theatrical release wasn't good. The Director's Cut is decent, but the American release is too simple. Also, Scott liked the classical soundtrack from the European release better.

  • @Quadzilla99 Yes I have read that Scott wasnt pleased with the original cut of Legend. I have the directors cut on DVD. I have yet to watch it but I cannot imagine it being a better film than the original cut. For me the movie is enhanced so greatly by the Tangerine Dream soundtrack so for that reason alone I know it wont measure up. I mistakenly purchased the other soundtrack years ago and was disappointed with it

  • @mystro810 It's definitely a beautiful film there's no doubt about that. The reason the DC is better for me is they don't show Curry in his Devil getup until the mirror scene. When I showed it to my girlfriend she said the mirror scene and Curry's makeup made it worth the whole wait up to that point. She hadn't really liked it much before then but that blew her away. I think using the mirror scene as his first full appearance makes for one of the great intros in cinema.

  • @mystro810 I don't know Ebert gave thumbs up to both Conan movies, but other then that I don't know.

  • A film shouldn't be judged based on how well it performs as a socialization catalyst. Not everything exists solely for retards to blabber their mouths during.

  • Saw both versions and hated the film either way but love the director

  • i liked this film, the director' s cut is better and just feels more like a real film.

  • Ooh, Ebert makes a great counterpoint at the end to money=great imagery.

    These two were awesome debaters.

  • Agreed

  • great film these gys are douche bags

  • The reason S&E didn't like it, is because Legend is genuinely one helluva trippy film. When I watched it when I was younger, I found it really dark and the acting and plot, pretty weird. But funnily enough, now, I really love it. It is definitely a movie you can't take seriously. It's a guilty pleasure, a movie you secretly watch when nobody's around lol.

  • Sounds like if you have to watch it alone then it's obviously not a great film

  • I'm not going to dispute, it isn't a great movie. But there's something in the edge of the movie that I just love about it. You don't get it in today's movies so much...

  • I will disagree but You're Right when you say that today's movie lack the style, grittyness, creativity, edgyness or raw power that the 80s or 90s had!

So much of it is remade or done with CGI that it's beyond pathetic.

Only really good movie in past decade were The Departed, Minority Report, Lord of the Rings, District 9, Dark Knight & Frost/ Nixon.

Other then that, nothing that memorable

  • @Sean Connery9000. You didnt mention the Movie Children of Men from 2005 I believe. It was amazing. Rivaled only by The Lord of The Rings and The Dark Knight as the movie of the decade in my opinion. For some reason it isnt so well known but its great

  • great movie

  • I saw LEGEND when it came out here in the States in April of 1986. And I remember REALLY liking it. I still love this movie! And I didn't realize Siskel and Ebert had trashed it.

  • He would have reviewed the US version, right?

What do you think Ebert would have thought of the Director's Cut?

  • U.S. or European that still can't excuse Tom Cruise's embaressing performance.

  • They were so totally wrong they were almost right.Great movie, full of fantastic imagery.

  • i liked legend. looked beautiful.

  • Legend is a classic. One of the best fantasy films ever,it's like a fairytale brought to life (and I mean a real fairytale not that sanitized Disney shit).

  • 2:40 Tom Cruise beat up Pyramid head!
