  • bet that is :)

  • 3rd couple ever the really cool kids I beat :)

  • crazy-cool!

  • the first couple comes closest to doing it right, especially the guy

  • The best part of this song is the bump & grind beat & saxaphone.. Love it.

  • Zombies dancing. No one is smiling.... not having a good time. SAD!! Glad now, is now

  • In 1958, I was 9 goin on 10. I had three older sisters, so I had to watch American Bandstand. And I'm glad I did!

  • I was only 6 going on 7 in 1958 but I remember this. I loved American Bandstand.

  • I was a Junior in High School when this was made and we all did "The Stroll" at ther Rec Center....long, long time ago. Next came the "Twist" and they wouldn't let us do it at my freshman year dance in college !! LOL !! Time have sure changed.

  • The Original Stroll - February 1958 Not True: The late great Chuck Willis was The King of The Stroll and recorded this, first. This is the white cover by The Diamonds

  • Apparently, we whities didn't get rhythm and coordination until after 1958.

  • like them glasses. i had a teacher who wore ones like them.

    old and never married.

  • He,he, the white kid's soul train line, he,he Good job guys! :)

    YOUTUBE IS THE BEST !!!!!!!!

  • How exciting. lol

  • Preliminary dance steps for the much later "Electric Slide" or "Texas Ten Step". Too bad they look so serious!

  • @bobbiandbogie I was thinking the same thing . . . how about a smile, like you're enjoying yourselves?

  • I grew up in the Fifties and this brings back memories.

  • Was the birth of the saying "White kids can't dance"

But was fun to watch anyhow...So innocent back then, what happened?

  • @RealJeep Not all for sure.

  • @RealJeep White kids can't dance, bet if I said something about blacks here it would be all up in arms! Geez! I just have to consider the source & move on!

  • Geee, they look like they're having so much fun. ggl

  • ...

Goddammit. Black people really are cooler than us, aren't they?

  • @Balarrojador Are you really serious?

  • @momsher1 No, no, a moment of weakness. No, we whites are still the coolest. We have the Fonz AND adult Michael Jackson.

But we should probably take this video down, destroy all hard copies of it, and deny that it ever was.

  • I had to watch Bandstand as a kid in NYC because I had a big sister. She tried to teach me these dances only I was about a foot shorter than her. Had great fun anyway.

  • @clarkewi This IS NOT Bandstand. I don't know why you all keep referring to it as American Bandstand. It's a local tv station that let kids come & dance! GEEZ!

  • @momsher1 Give me a break, it was over fifty years ago. Sheesh....

  • TO: medusa7ful: I grew up in Oakland (Piedmont Ave, St Leo, McChesney JHS, Fremont HS) and kinda remember a name Banks. Where was that??

  • This song reminds me of Mr. Banks in Oakland, CA. It was a place where all the cool teens hung out. I smell the burgers and grilled onions and french fries. I miss Mr. Banks. : D

  • That´s so funny!

  • God.. I was 3 years old!

  • Different time, different values. Most families had record players and black and white tv's. They were different people then, enjoying the music that allowed them to have fun. Thanks for posting this video, it helps me show my son what life was like back then.

  • THE FIRST SOUL TRAIN LINE!!! LOL

  • Those teens don't look like they're happy about doing this.

  • This is fantastic. The kids are so shy and innocent. I think some of the guys wish they were somewhere -- anywhere -- else than that Stroll line. LOL. This is just sweet. Thanks for posting. BTW some of those kids are pretty good. They would have been a hit on Philly American Bandstand.

  • I can understand why young people of today would find this dance boring, but if you lived during this period as I did, this dance was major and lots of fun. pure innocence. some of the best music was done during this time. but for me, I also love disco. those 2 time period were the most fun times for dancing. two completely different kinds of music, but lots of fun.

  • @debrad99 I hear you on the variety of music! I appreciate this video, it's a nice piece of reality, something reality shows today wouldn't know about. I grew up in the late 60s early 70s and love that music too. I love all kinds of music though.

  • It would be funny if black people ran in there and started playing rap

  • @Dwain9596 How would that be funny? I just don't get stupid people!

  • What started off as rockabilly in the mid 50s had several shocks. Elvis was drafted; the Everly bros were drafted; Buddy Holly was killed in aircraft crash; Carl Perkins nearly killed in car crash which ultimately ruined his career. The driving forces of rock in the late 50s for whatever the reason were removed from the scene. After about 4 years of listening to crap the beatles made their way to US. They changed everything. R&B was the basis of UK bands & there were really good ones.

  • oh my god dont they look happy and carefree... no wonder american rock needed a kick up the arse when the Beatles arrived .. this song is a dirge and the teens look bored shitlees and i dont blame them

  • @justagog Don't take away from our elders & the fun they had with the 50s & 60s just because this Saturday mock of Bandstand doesn't impress you! That's not fair! The 50s & 60s set the future of rock!

  • wtf ?:D

  • These kids suck. They need some black kids to teach them how to dance!

  • @drgirlfri3nd next time you see me walkin down the street, ill be doing the stroll:D

  • Just to get the record straight ... 'Seventeen' originated from WOI-TV Ames, Iowa. It was on every Saturday around 5 pm. One of the hosts was Betty Lou McVay who also had a puppet show called 'The Magic Window'.

  • they kinda look like zombies....no expression...doesn't look like they are have fun at all. when I did the stroll back then, I rocked that line...great times!!!

  • @debrad99 They were probably scared witless about being on the television.

    1) Because of the stage fright; and

    2) Because their parents thought they were at the library 'cause they weren't even allowed to watch the show let alone BE on it! LOL!

    We ARE talking 1958 here.

  • Idaho?? You don't say.

  • After listening to this, what boy wouldn't have a " Woody " ?

  • ...i was 13 years old and do remember this song...!

  • If you wanna see the rubber leg dance , type in The Belew Twins and check that out. They're from Mars

  • 1:07 He's the coolest by far!

  • Only in America, where we all influence each other wether we realize it or not and hopefully emerge with something different if not better. Did Don Cornelius do a soulful Re-Mix? This could have been his inspiration for the Soul Train Line. He did say the idea for his show came from Dick Clarks "American Bandstand". Was Don hanging out in Idaho in 1958? Only in America!

  • if you dont like it then go to your rap CRAP

  • THAT WAS BORING AS FUCK.....SOUL TRAIN LINE PLEASE!!!!!

  • @8309browneyes Why don't you go check out some real black music like some Dee Dee Sharp with Chubby Checker & shut your mouth about these kids just doing their thing...it's called childhood. You want someone seeing you in your childhood on youtube & making fun of you? Have a heart!

  • My older sister would really stroll..she would lean back and forth ...and put allot of rhythm to it..she was great..i was 6 when this came out ....good days...

  • are you supposed to look miserable while doing the stroll?

  • :)))

  • SOUL TRAIN GOT THE IDEA FROM THIS

  • @wingully ...

    .

    ..Yes...Perhaps.

BUT..they did it FAR better. The stroll was a dance craze. The Soul Train line is an institution.

  • There's that kid again in the black striped shirt cutting the line. The guy behind him should have punched him out! Just kidding

  • @fiddlerpin Actually fiddlerpin - they are twins. Check the line at about 0.52

  • @WindNSand You know something your absolutely right! I didn't see that. I thought he was a line cheater. Imagine the jokes twins play on people!

  • This is an absolute treasure. Better than what Carter found in King Tut's tomb.

  • @msteven515 Bet you can stroll better!

  • This is better than Soul Train...sorry Don :)

  • Don Cornelius said he stole this for his Soul Train Line Dance. His words, not mine. Watch show The Hippest Show... You'll enjoy whether youre white, black, etc. You will go back forty years and enjoy it.

  • Just TOO cool - brought tears to my eyes!

  • Jeeezzz, that brings memories back - some not so good. I remember we had our dances in the boys gym (phew!), and everytimeThe Stroll by the Diamonds came on, I always got the girls who had a face like Trigger, Roy Rogers horse. Great memories. . remember playing on XCFT, Croughton. I am sooooo thankful I grew up during and thru that great age of music!!! Thank you sooo much for taking time & trouble to upload.

    CFN

  • Were these kids from Idaho forced hostage dancers? If so, thank you for my freedom!

  • This is for you MoeMeister..................the Queen of Brooklyn Oldies!

  • this was a year before i ws born.............so how do i know the song and the dance............twighlight zone me thinks!

  • @lillylilic Don't you ever listen to old music? Personally, I love this music because my hubby & I go to a lot of street rod shows where they play this music. No twilight zone involved! Duh!

  • anybody have any footage of people doing the Stroll to Chuck Willis' version of C.C. Rider on Bandstand?

  • @d820m There are a few versions on here. Use the search function and go right to them. Chuck left us too soon.

  • The second couple strolling looked like they were on heavy meds.

  • @qpfj Sounds like something that would come from todays public since so many today can't seem to function without their prescription meds. Not saying they were perfect in the 50s but doubt that was as big a problem like today. I think they were just shy & young & dumbfounded at the thought of being on tv.

  • Yep, I agree. TV was something so revolutionary, it for the first time ever invited the public into one's personal life, not like it is today where you can be a reality star with a home camera and let it all hang out at a very young age. Different time and different world.

  • Based on the logo, 5 Seventeen, this is more likely from Iowa than Idaho (and possibly aired ON WOI-TV 5, Des Moines' ABC affiliate)

  • lol..

  • Not exactly the Soul Train line.

  • loved this song, then . . . and now. time make no difference. and a question, does anyone remember another stroll song called "The Deacon's Walk"? i'd love to hear it again. oldies forever!

  • Outstanding,All white folks.

  • They all look bored or sad. Isn't dancing supposed to be fun?

  • GO IOWA!!

  • ...this dance, as shown above by clueless urban-ites, was the antithesis of what the real dancers were doing, the grind ! Dirty dancing, if you will. The video clip makes me laugh.

  • I could take 'em all out with one punch! I've frisked a thousand young punks.

  • @Bopalena There's a name for men who mess around with kids.

  • @hjb103055 - Yeah - Coach Sandusky.

  • @Bopalena LOL!!!!!!!!

  • Wow!! This is liek waaayyy cool for me. I'm way into studying dance, music history, and mid century cultural issues.... Thanks for the great post. Really appreciate it. Regards and thanks, J.

  • can we say awkward?!

  • hey, that dude who comes on at 1:09 is pretty smooth! man, i wish i woulda had moves like that.

  • They did this dance to the wrong song in Grease

  • I wasn't born until the next year...but love this music! This tv clip cracks me up. You can tell some of the kids were so shy to dance...wonderful nostalgia...thanks for sharing!

  • @momsher1 - Actually this group of kids are not as good as those that were good dancers - eventually they would start to focus on the good dancers.. I hate to say

this but these guys are duds. Sorry if I offend anyone but I tell it like it is.

  • @castalia60able douche

  • @momsher1 look how they dressed back then ! was born in 1948.

  • I was 12 years old, I was not allowed to go out with girls, tis song reminds me of Linda Rider, I wanted to dance with her. I coul smell her,so, not knowing what and why, I would J off atnight just so I couldgo to asleep. I love this song. No, I do not J..off, now to sleep. Still think of Linda R. Good night Linda R... where ever you are. hahahahah

  • Not a bad song...wonder who is singing? But the dancing...geesh...compare with Soul train only a decade later!

  • the men sure did dance better, back then

  • I dig those white bobby socks. I can't tell, but I'll bet most of the girls are also wearing penny loafers.

  • YES, that's true, hazzard5011! We white people think we invented all the good dances and the good music, but most of it originated in the African American community. The white musicians and producers made the big money from it while many of the people who had originated the music and the dances died penniless. So sad.

  • dNo. No. NO. this did not originate on Bandstand, but in African american communities across America....credit those who created most American dances.

  • @hazzard5011 That's what I thought too. But I can't find any videos with black folks doing the stroll. But I know my parents did it because they showed me. By that time we had the soul train line going.

  • The man who was considered the king of the stroll Chuck Willis died April 10, 1958, when this song hit the charts. quite ironic

  • I was in 7th grade when that came out. Guys would just walk down the line between the dancers making a big joke out of it. It was cool.

  • Yes, many of them didn't quite have it down cold yet.. but back then they hadn't had much practice at it, it was new....

  • Una lástima!

  • holy fuck

  • Some are very good..,most are not...as an old sroller I retain that right to comment.

  • @rudeman15 I love it!!! For all of us without a lick of rhythm this wonderful! They are just out there 'strolling along' and it is so much fun to watch. The kids seemed like actual kids and so innocent.

  • @rudeman15 But fun to watch! :)

  • favourite at the roller skating rink

  • First one down-future librarian

  • que música é essa e quem canta?

  • Get OUTTA TOWN! Awesome, the real deal, stroll!!!

  • ハハハ

    ゾンビみたいだ。

  • When I was a kid, my Mom used to yank me up and make me dance with her to this old one, lol!

    Loved it!

    XX

  • I LOVE THIS! Why was it hidden?

  • Who needs TV when we have youtube!

  • Pass the gun Mother ...

  • I've never seen anyone look so utterly miserable while moving to music, let alone an entire room of them.

  • @ElNingyou For pete's sake, they're in IDAHO!!

  • Great video and a great song. I'll take the 50's and 60's anytime. Real music and lots of fun...

  • You'all R CRUEL!...(but that'ul never come back 'Farmer Boys In Pants!)..unless you're an Gangster Rapper African American in the 21st Century with a place to hide your weapon..your drugs..what you jus ripped off in a store!.."wha'chu mean man?"

  • white peoples version of the soul train line, who said we cant dance

  • Idaho? Who knew it was so hip? I thought Idaho was just cows and potatoes. And Mormons.

  • If parents think this is rebellious they would of had a heart attack if they saw a lady gaga video

  • This music is Definetly rebellious

  • Well that looks a riot!

  • Couple #3 get it. Strut your stuff.

  • Cool j'adore

Peut être un peu fatiguant :)

Mais après c'est les slow, on va pouvoir récupérer

  • EEEY secand is my grand-pa

  • This song sounds dirty and dangerous! Race music! I love it! Follw this gem up with Link Wray's " Rumble "! Well rock my soul!

  • I know that managing a bunch of co-ed prepubescents probably isn't easy, (although it WAS the late great sedate 50's), but watching them "stroll" makes me want to see another group that's been given less thorazine and see if they're more energetic...just an idea...

  • JUst for the record (so to speak), they're dancing to "The Stroll" by The Diamonds (Mercury 71242), which debuted the week of December 30, 1957 and hung around for 21 weeks, peaking at #4. Of The Diamonds' 16 1956-61 hits, this was their second biggest (after "Little Darlin'").

  • The lack of " Soul " Train line!

  • @Ultrabrut1 LOL. Play this clip in mute while playing OJAYS love train.

  • hey it's granny and grammpy in Iowa when they were wild teenagers kiddies! before they got "born agian" and voted for michele bachmann, in the Iowa ames straw poll!

  • Are we having fun yet?

  • I was listening to music before R&R was invented[i was born in 1944].Long live R&R!!!!!Great song!

  • The song was 2 cool 4 most of these kids, maybe not the jd's or hipsters

  • Actually this was in Iowa ....... this clip was part of another a year ago or so

  • 00:37 to 00:57 he's aiming way too high.

  • looks to me that there is the shape of Iowa on the wall channel 17

  • Ok...I hate to be 'witchy' here BUT? Watching these 'kids' do the stroll was boring as when we did it, it was done with class, rhythm and steps going far beyond what they were doing...far too boring and straightforward...come on guys, we were in MAINE and had better class and strolling-style than this! Nonethless, it was fun to think back on those days and watch this.

  • Jees .. the days when you could pick up a girl without the use of a Bobcat .

  • 17 Year olds looked like adults back then! Awesome I wish it was like that today.

  • @jbeatles99 Kids today wouldn't take it!

  • Idaho teens haven't changed much in 50 years. Still Mountain Homely.

  • The first kid is good , the second stiff and he cuts the line, and the third is cool!

  • The 2nd boy in the line sneeked back in line to stroll again with another girl. Great!

  • i would stroll tonite...

  • I'm very surprised the guy with the white sweater didn't beat the hell out of that kid by cuttin him off.

  • 2nd thought--I'm from Clearlake and was at the Surf that night....

dion,Buddy and Ritchie..dg Clearlake to Ames 60 miles.......

  • Mr. Memories, look at the state on the curtain. That's Iowa not idaho and that's Ch. 5 in Ames Iowa. That's me and a couple of buddys doin the stroll to Diamonds....I'm the cool won with the duck tail--that's DA short for Duck A- s...dg...

  • very funny those '50.ies ! I think the stroll never came to Europa.

  • what a nerve!!!! the kid with the black shirt(stripes) cut the line.he looks very stiff.

  • Most of these guys and gals would now be in their mid 70s.

I wonder if they're still doing the Stroll?

  • @HerculePoirot1000 I bet they are!

  • @HerculePoirot1000 yes we are just a little slower

  • @HerculePoirot1000 That would be me A .70 yr old buzzard.

  • @HerculePoirot1000 EVERY CHANCE WE GET!!!

  • @HerculePoirot1000 Nah! They must've upgraded to Dubstep by now, hahahahahaha! ;)

  • why do most of them look like they're "strollin'" to a funeral? Nobody smiled!

  • @squigglyjambo That's just the way you looked. You tried to look cool by not showing emotion.

  • white people!

  • Children- stop this satanic nonesense! Someone will get pregnant!
