I was a Junior in High School when this was made and we all did "The Stroll" at ther Rec Center....long, long time ago. Next came the "Twist" and they wouldn't let us do it at my freshman year dance in college !! LOL !! Time have sure changed.
The Original Stroll - February 1958 Not True: The late great Chuck Willis was The King of The Stroll and recorded this, first. This is the white cover by The Diamonds
@RealJeep White kids can't dance, bet if I said something about blacks here it would be all up in arms! Geez! I just have to consider the source & move on!
I had to watch Bandstand as a kid in NYC because I had a big sister. She tried to teach me these dances only I was about a foot shorter than her. Had great fun anyway.
@clarkewi This IS NOT Bandstand. I don't know why you all keep referring to it as American Bandstand. It's a local tv station that let kids come & dance! GEEZ!
This song reminds me of Mr. Banks in Oakland, CA. It was a place where all the cool teens hung out. I smell the burgers and grilled onions and french fries. I miss Mr. Banks. : D
Different time, different values. Most families had record players and black and white tv's. They were different people then, enjoying the music that allowed them to have fun. Thanks for posting this video, it helps me show my son what life was like back then.
This is fantastic. The kids are so shy and innocent. I think some of the guys wish they were somewhere -- anywhere -- else than that Stroll line. LOL. This is just sweet. Thanks for posting. BTW some of those kids are pretty good. They would have been a hit on Philly American Bandstand.
I can understand why young people of today would find this dance boring, but if you lived during this period as I did, this dance was major and lots of fun. pure innocence. some of the best music was done during this time. but for me, I also love disco. those 2 time period were the most fun times for dancing. two completely different kinds of music, but lots of fun.
@debrad99 I hear you on the variety of music! I appreciate this video, it's a nice piece of reality, something reality shows today wouldn't know about. I grew up in the late 60s early 70s and love that music too. I love all kinds of music though.
What started off as rockabilly in the mid 50s had several shocks. Elvis was drafted; the Everly bros were drafted; Buddy Holly was killed in aircraft crash; Carl Perkins nearly killed in car crash which ultimately ruined his career. The driving forces of rock in the late 50s for whatever the reason were removed from the scene. After about 4 years of listening to crap the beatles made their way to US. They changed everything. R&B was the basis of UK bands & there were really good ones.
oh my god dont they look happy and carefree... no wonder american rock needed a kick up the arse when the Beatles arrived .. this song is a dirge and the teens look bored shitlees and i dont blame them
@justagog Don't take away from our elders & the fun they had with the 50s & 60s just because this Saturday mock of Bandstand doesn't impress you! That's not fair! The 50s & 60s set the future of rock!
Just to get the record straight ... 'Seventeen' originated from WOI-TV Ames, Iowa. It was on every Saturday around 5 pm. One of the hosts was Betty Lou McVay who also had a puppet show called 'The Magic Window'.
they kinda look like zombies....no expression...doesn't look like they are have fun at all. when I did the stroll back then, I rocked that line...great times!!!
Only in America, where we all influence each other wether we realize it or not and hopefully emerge with something different if not better. Did Don Cornelius do a soulful Re-Mix? This could have been his inspiration for the Soul Train Line. He did say the idea for his show came from Dick Clarks "American Bandstand". Was Don hanging out in Idaho in 1958? Only in America!
@8309browneyes Why don't you go check out some real black music like some Dee Dee Sharp with Chubby Checker & shut your mouth about these kids just doing their thing...it's called childhood. You want someone seeing you in your childhood on youtube & making fun of you? Have a heart!
My older sister would really stroll..she would lean back and forth ...and put allot of rhythm to it..she was great..i was 6 when this came out ....good days...
Don Cornelius said he stole this for his Soul Train Line Dance. His words, not mine. Watch show The Hippest Show... You'll enjoy whether youre white, black, etc. You will go back forty years and enjoy it.
Jeeezzz, that brings memories back - some not so good. @momsher1 - Actually this group of kids are not as good as those that were good dancers - eventually they would start to focus on the good dancers.. I hate to say
this but these guys are duds. Sorry if I offend anyone but I tell it like it is.
I was 12 years old, I was not allowed to go out with girls, tis song reminds me of Linda Rider, I wanted to dance with her. I coul smell her,so, not knowing what and why, I would J off atnight just so I couldgo to asleep. I love this song. No, I do not J..off, now to sleep. Still think of Linda R. Good night Linda R... where ever you are. hahahahah
YES, that's true, hazzard5011! We white people think we invented all the good dances and the good music, but most of it originated in the African American community. The white musicians and producers made the big money from it while many of the people who had originated the music and the dances died penniless. So sad.
dNo. No. NO. this did not originate on Bandstand, but in African american communities across America....credit those who created most American dances.
@hazzard5011 That's what I thought too. But I can't find any videos with black folks doing the stroll. But I know my parents did it because they showed me. By that time we had the soul train line going.
@rudeman15 I love it!!! For all of us without a lick of rhythm this wonderful! They are just out there 'strolling along' and it is so much fun to watch. The kids seemed like actual kids and so innocent.

JUst for the record (so to speak), they're dancing to "The Stroll" by The Diamonds (Mercury 71242), which debuted the week of December 30, 1957 and hung around for 21 weeks, peaking at #4. Of The Diamonds' 16 1956-61 hits, this was their second biggest (after "Little Darlin'").
hey it's granny and grammpy in Iowa when they were wild teenagers kiddies! before they got "born agian" and voted for michele bachmann, in the Iowa ames straw poll!
Ok...I hate to be 'witchy' here BUT? Watching these 'kids' do the stroll was boring as when we did it, it was done with class, rhythm and steps going far beyond what they were doing...far too boring and straightforward...come on guys, we were in MAINE and had better class and strolling-style than this! Nonethless, it was fun to think back on those days and watch this.
Mr. Memories, look at the state on the curtain. That's Iowa not idaho and that's Ch. 5 in Ames Iowa. That's me and a couple of buddys doin the stroll to Diamonds....I'm the cool won with the duck tail--that's DA short for Duck A- s...dg...
