Stunning. His voice is a lot bigger than what you hear- but this man "sings on the interest, not on the principal." This aria is about pacing. If you blow out the high notes earlier in the piece, then forget it. Donizetti wrote the little pauses in the piece to help the tenor survive the onslaught of "C's".

I think you nailed it. I suspect a lot of people hear Kraus, maybe for the 1st time, and realize that he is at least as good as their own favorites, and probably much better. Then they start making nasty comments, 'dislike' etc..

What a voice here that was taken for granted (cried @ his Werther)--now Florez is the "king" of high Cs (to me an unpleasant sound, especially when Florez made a whole Alice Tully afternoon with them!)--personally, I cannot forecast his voice lasting as long as Krauses but, as they say, he's so handsome. TX for allowing me to hear this now all-too-popular aria again sung w/o effort & great power!

He lasted so long career-wise, and so superbly so, because he wisely limited his roles that fit his voice, unlike so many tenors who are like the proverbial clowns who want to play Hamlet. Even Pavarotti screwed up when he tried to do Otello. And Di Steffano absolutely ruined his voice by trying dramatic roles.
By the way - despite this DO (9!) and RE I've seen myself Alfredo was not a lirical tenor. He was not terribly dramatic, but his voice was too strong and masculine to be considered lirical as a hypothesis.
Pude sonar como algo tonto o tribial, pero nunca habia visto a agluien dar el do de pecho y caminar al mismo tiempo, es algo sorprendente por que es una nota muy complicada que necesita mucha concentracion y apoyo. Y si a esto le agregas que esta en vivo y acaba de dar otos 8 do's siguen siendo aun mas increible.
Puedo entender que la voz de Kraus no sea del agrado de todos, pues no fue una voz potente y abaritonada con redondez. A mí particularmente siempre me ha gustado su voz. Lo que es absolutamente indiscutible es la perfección de su técnica.
con 59 años, esto demuestra la tecnica maestra de este genio. no cabe duda de que es la mejor tecnica vocal del siglo XX. con todos los respetos, ninguno de los grandes tenores ligeros se atreve pasados los 50 , con nueve dos de pecho en medio de una opera en un teatro.

Lo mejor de todo es que lo canto hasta el final de sus dias, mi paisano ha sido uno de los mejores tenores de todos los tiempos, por lo menos en un repetorio lirico-ligero como era el de él.

No se conoce en la historia de la lírica un un tenor en esa condición vocal a tal edad. El gran Lauri Volpi que tuvo también una carrera longeva, aunque no a este extremo de salud canora, manifestó en diversas ocasiones su predilección y admiración por el arte de D. Alfredo

Son tonterias esas afirmaciones la Callas, tenia tres registros bien marcados y a los 52 estaba acabada con la voz, con tremolo pesado. la voz de krauss es aguda pero no bella.
I always thought that Alfredo Kraus was one of the tenors of the first magnitude, and it's neat seeing him in the role of Tonio in "Fille du regiment". I was a chorus member - one of the solders in a production of "Daughter" in the late '80's , I believe. We did our production in English. I prefer it in French, but this is great! Kraus is another great tenor who is no longer with us, but we have his voice and presence to enjoy. Bravo, Alfredo! There are 9 high C's in this, and he hits them all.

Nel Suo repertorio(leggero)Kraus era bravissimo,ma da dire che era il migliore tenore del mondo mi sembra un po' esagerato.
Nikolov interpretava Otello e la sera dopo cantava Rodolfo con DO.

By the way - despite this DO (9!) and RE I've seen myself Alfredo was not a lirical tenor. He was not terribly dramatic, but his voice was too strong and masculine to be considered lirical as a hypothesis.

Pude sonar como algo tonto o tribial, pero nunca habia visto a agluien dar el do de pecho y caminar al mismo tiempo, es algo sorprendente por que es una nota muy complicada que necesita mucha concentracion y apoyo. Y si a esto le agregas que esta en vivo y acaba de dar otos 8 do's siguen siendo aun mas increible.

Puedo entender que la voz de Kraus no sea del agrado de todos, pues no fue una voz potente y abaritonada con redondez. A mí particularmente siempre me ha gustado su voz. Lo que es absolutamente indiscutible es la perfección de su técnica.

con 59 años, esto demuestra la tecnica maestra de este genio. no cabe duda de que es la mejor tecnica vocal del siglo XX. con todos los respetos, ninguno de los grandes tenores ligeros se atreve pasados los 50 , con nueve dos de pecho en medio de una opera en un teatro.

Es dificil que uno llegue a ser SOLO tenor ligero a los 59, ni Krauss lo fue. el era lirico, con agudos como el do, y el re bemol. que gozo siempre.

Estimado manrico Estuve allí y como he escrito en un comentario sobre el Werther de Paris, que también presencié dos años antes, fue sublime. Escuchen las ovaciones enardecidas e interminables, nada comparables con el final. Coincido con Ud., no sólo fue un intérprete histórico, sino un ser humano intachable y un reconocido intelectual, honrado por gobiernos, teatros y universidades de diversas partes del mundo; al que conocí y vi actuar en 22 ocasiones.

Supongo que lo conocen, pero si no es así, sugiero a Ud. y a los demás, entren en "Kraus y el brindis de MARINA", grabado en octubre de 1998, un mes antes de cumplir 71 años y once antes de fallecer en 1999. No se conoce en la historia de la lírica un un tenor en esa condición vocal a tal edad. El gran Lauri Volpi que tuvo también una carrera longeva, aunque no a este extremo de salud canora, manifestó en diversas ocasiones su predilección y admiración por el arte de D. Alfredo

Son tonterias esas afirmaciones la Callas, tenia tres registros bien marcados y a los 52 estaba acabada con la voz, con tremolo pesado. la voz de krauss es aguda pero no bella.

I always thought that Alfredo Kraus was one of the tenors of the first magnitude, and it's neat seeing him in the role of Tonio in "Fille du regiment". I was a chorus member - one of the solders in a production of "Daughter" in the late '80's , I believe. We did our production in English. I prefer it in French, but this is great! Kraus is another great tenor who is no longer with us, but we have his voice and presence to enjoy. Bravo, Alfredo! There are 9 high C's in this, and he hits them all.
