  • so only metal frame for slingshot!

  • As always when shoting things, you can have fragments of the target flying in any direction, so even if glasses don't stop balls or a breaking sling, they can still protect against many other dangers.

  • Just like cavemen did, oh wait no.

  • hey could you make and show us how you make your tagets

  • bOTH THE CHEAP SAFETY GLASSES AND SUN GLASSES BROKE! this video is overall pointless... i now know that if a guy was in my face with a slingshot, aiming at my eye.... Regardless of what im wearing ( sun glasses or safety glasses ) he will win

  • Very pleased to see that you examine safety issues regarding slingshots. Thank you for posting such an impressive demonstration!

  • Use your bike helmet :D

    or buy a paintball mask

  • i think this one was obvious any way this was still awsome

  • He never saw what hit him.

  • i think whats more likely then a arm snapping is the rubber band itself snapping, i had one spit my lip open a couple of months ago

  • Hard boiled eggs are much better anology

  • Your eye does not pertrude like the egg , you eye does give a little unlike the egg and the safety glasses did not break..And you will find that proper safety glasses are impact resistant.

  • That was way creepy

  • Hi Joerg,

I am a recent fan and would like to suggest this pair of ballistic glasses from Wiley X which some of the Australian troops use in Afganistan- have a look at the Wiley X website. You may wish to use these ballistic tested glasses.

  • the thing with the eye is that its farther inside your head than the egg was and the glasses are made so that if something hits them, the glasses will push the eye back while not touching the exposed part.

  • you shold git a paint ball mask

  • Boss! The plane! The plane!

It would be more accurate to use a hard boiled egg.

  • omelets, anyone?

  • tet it on a pigs eye from a slouther or what ever guy..nem schlachter halt....

  • I took optometry in college and think that an Egg is a weak stand in for a human eye. They eye is actually very thick walled with a rubbery material. Safety glasses, even the cheap ones you tested, so long as they stay together would likely at worse only cause broken orbital bone damage, which is dangerous, but you likely will not lose an eye.

  • @chromeharris I have been hit in the eye with a snapped rubber band. It blinded me for weeks and will never heal entirely. So I disagree, the eye is extremely vulnerable, more than an egg.

  • @chromeharris Although the actual sclera of the eye is hard to cut or pierce, I'm sure the massive pressure transferred through the vitreous humour to the retina would do some pretty major damage. It's like how people get eye and organ damage in explosions simply from the pressure wave of the blast being transferred through their cavities etc. Props on taking optom though, my friends are doing it now and it sounds pretty interesting.

  • kinda disgusting if you really imagine its a real eye

  • I just suggested on some of your other videos you should point out the dangers of slingshots, especially to the eyes. Now, after doing so, I found this video of yours. You are my hero now! Thanks and best wishes,

    flyingmagiccarpet.

  • safety always comes first..but what would life be without risks..you can get hurt or

die in a car accident..it's good to think about..what can happen..but if you always

go for the worst case..you may be end up in paranoia and you get afrait to leave your house..this might be the worst case of not having an enjoyable life..

  • very interesting video clips..thank you..i like to watch your clips..your videos are as good as most tv shows like mythbusters or the german gallileo show

  • thats a nice way to protect others or and warn others

  • thats a nice way to protect others

  • if your eye breaks and the jelly come out it will never come back the safetynator cooming soon near you

  • That was a very worthwhile and sobering video, I would be interested in seeing what eye protection you find works the best!

  • i felt a little dizzy after watching the egg crack

  • Wow Your garden is really nice!

  • lol eyejellys

  • As disturbing as the exploding "eye" was at the same time I found this video to be very entertaining and educational :) Thanks lots for making it!

  • Why are you smiling Styrofoam head!?

  • to be the guy who warns people about potential eye damage is a VERY IMPORTANT thing,

when i started badminton no one warned me about eye damage and i got hit in the eye by my coach's racquet. and later on found out many players went blind getting hit by the shuttle, i am now half blind on right side.

  • Jelly in my eye? ITS PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!

  • Love you setup :D

  • I have been hit in the eye by a 20mm steel ball, that ricochet off a steel plate. i was not shooting but standing next to a friend. I was very lucky because i never lost my eye, but it really hurt. don't even go near a sling shot without eye protection. you don't want to learn the hard way

  • that eye looks freaky

  • I think safety goggles with head bands are the way to go. I have ordered two different models (one inexpensive and one mid price product) and will test them ASAP.

  • @JoergSprave At the fire hall we have extremely thick protective glasses for auto extrication so maybe those would work well?

  • Aweful demonstration, but how we're able to protect our eyes right? I mean.. a welding helmet isn't that elegant way to do.

  • I shopped around and settled on the AOS Maxim 2x2 goggles - cool looking and outfitted with a headband. Those are also certified for high impact protection.

  • Great video!

Swimming glasses could be strong enougth to tackle a ricochet. But if you're shooting steel balls they got alot more energy left after impact with your target. A lead ball with the same mass and speed would have less energy left when ricochet, because the deformation of the lead takes energy.

From a safety perspective it's therefore "less" dangerous to shoot with lead balls.

  • True, lead balls are much safer. When shooting steel, the shooter must always shoot at an angle so the ricochet does not hit him right back.

  • Great video.. Very interesting but at the same time very frightning..

  • Jeorg I agree about the visor. I used to work with nail guns & we repeated a test from a safty video in the shop. 3 out 5 times the safty glasses faild plus in the humid summer the safty glasses fog up and cause workers to injur their hands simply because we could see what we was doing. That ended with the visor which was less apt to be knocked of or crack.

  • Another thing I'd like to point out is that the glasses flew up when hit, if they had a piece of elastic that went round the back of the head this would help hold them in place and and make them more effective.

  • OMG, this is is nightmarish, but enlightening. Thanks for honest video...

  • Maybe something like the revision eyewear bullet ant goggles would be better ?

  • I use Oakley. I had a pair that had retired & tested with a 1200 fps 22 caliber pellet gun & a 12 gauge shotgun with pheasant rounds less than 2 meters & even the wad didn't penetrate. The rest of the face was toast but the eyes were untouched. I got hit by a slingshot ricochet that was a 5 meter shot with 50 caliber steel ball hit the lens. My nose hurt from the impact but zero damage to the eye. I was grateful. I hope some people see the importance of real safety glasses over the cheap ones.

  • thanks for everything you do about the slingshots sport. this was one of your best videos and really interesting.

  • Thank you for the video. Keep up the great work.

  • Thank you for your responsible opinion on this matter,

  • Thank you for your responsible opinion on this matter,

  • serch for aatv or scaar on youtube! he made some rewiew of safty googles, too.

i am also wondering about something: why ist that so shocking, when a lethal weapon chrushes something? i eexpectet that you knew that already,jörg...

  • shocking! thanks for making this vid joerg, its a must see for all shooters.

  • I should get my mum to watch this, she's still pissed about how I brought my slingshot to school the other day..but if you told her "just because slingshots are dangerouis dosen't mean you can have fun shooting them" she might go ballistic, but I still think they're fun..I hope that video enlightened other people as it did with me, thanks Joerg.

  • full HD !!!! Joerg U rule

  • i think its about time you did a safety vid

i was poked in the eye very hard with a blunt object

    but it wasnt damged thankfully

my eye was pure red for weeks

i did find out it much more sturdy than it is made out to be

ive seen people get punched right in the eye and get no permanent damage

but wouldnt the fork fly toward the chin or cheek since basic safety says never pull to the eye?and what if you used goggles?

cant help but feel like this wanst done entirely right

  • Gr8 demo CHEERS

  • The safety glasses are designed to catch on the (brow) sub-orbital and (cheek) zygomatic bones. Not that damage might not occur, but I also learned during dissection that the eye is also quite resilient and will take quite a bit of pressure before rupturing. Think of fistfight and boxing impacts. Still, I agree with the purpose of this warning video, the eye is precious and I will continue to wear safety glasses and recommend them and the frequent checking of slingshot frames and band assemblies

  • Well, the eye is a lot more vulnerable than the egg shell. The slightest impact causes major injuries, as I can say from my own experiences. I could not break the egg with just the bands hitting it, but a band hit almost blinded me 18 months ago and the eye won't ever be back to normal.

I have lost faith in these safety glasses and I need to move on to something better.

This frightened me as I did not expect it.

  • @JoergSprave I do place my right arm by upper half of sternum, so if something breaks, i got hit there instead of eyes or teeth. Sometimes but rarely i bring aim to eyes, but only after i fully draw sling on chest level. Glasses are a must for close range shooting to protect from ricochets.

  • @JoergSprave

That is because it made contact with your tissue.

Jeez, the DERP in your logic is astounding.

  • What exactly is a DERP, please? Maybe I am getting too old for this.

Of course the damage was caused by contact with my tissue. How else - tele-lashing? :-)

  • Joerg,

Great safety warning! However, as I look closely at your setup I can't help but feel it is a bit flawed. I believe your egg "eyeball" is protruding to far out off the face, at least it appears to be from the videos. Safety glasses were created for even greater accidental impacts than this. While I am not a Doctor, I did do pre-med courses in biology, anatomy and physiology, and further studied to gaining my license as a therapist. Part 1

  • I don't think an egg is really representative of the eye, its far too brittle and considering you got hit whilst not wearing safety glasses and it didn't explode shows how resilient the eye can be. The eye has some give in it unike an egg. Also Jorg how much room do your slingshots take up in your house?, you must have hundreds!

  • Your glasses are good, just dummy was not built wery well... 1. Egg was not deep enough, eyeball are deeper. 2. Human bones and flesh together are much stronger than this foam. Once i got ricochet in my glasses by .38 lead piece. Of course it was weaker than real round (it was homemade), but still left bent in glasses plastic, and i actualy didnt feel anything.

  • The eye is actually a lot more vulnerable than the egg shell. So even if the eyeball would be set a little deeper, still this would have been it for that eye.

The foam was not tested, it only held the egg + glasses in place and had nothing to do with todays tests.

  • @RussianVitamines Well if you lose an arm in life, that wouldn't be so bad.

But being blind. Life is no fun.

Also I would consider glasses that is bullet proof, basically your shooting a projectile probably faster or bigger then a bullet.

  • wow that looks disgusting^^

    great video!

  • Safety first, and safety applies everywhere.

Great video Joerg. Keep them coming!

  • How about some tactical goggles? I think making that video could turn out quite expensive lol. Great video mate.

  • Great video!

You have inspired me to think of the following:

A face shield with a 45* angled safety glass to protect and deflect.

A welding mask would make for a good prototype platform.

    BoyntonStu

  • BOOM HEADSHOT!!!lol=]

  • wow for just being an egg.. it still was pretty graphic! haha
