I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE MET PHYLLIS IN NEW YORK AROUND 1979 OR 80. WE SEEMED TO SHARE A COMMON INTEREST IN LIFES UNPREDICTABILITY. WE TALKED FOR HOURS THAT FIRST EVENING. I HAPPEN TO SEE HER MONTHS LATER PERFORM IN HOUSTON TX. WHEN SHE SAW ME AFTER HER SET ENDED, SHE ACTED AS THOUGH I WERE A LONG LOST FAMILY MEMBER. SHE REMEMBERED EVERY WORD WE HAD SPOKEN.I LAST SAW HER IN L.A. A FEW MONTHS BEFORE SHE PASSED.SHE SEEMED SAD, BUT WAS SWEET AND CARING AS ALWAYS. A CLASSY PRETTY LADY TILL THE END
Phyllis Hyman, wow what can I say, those that know me, know how much I loved this lady! I'd seen her perform around NYC and NJ, with performance being different from the next, her every note reflected on her emotions and what or who was happening in her life at the time. For those who never saw her sing live, you missed greatness!...ds
This Lady was the class of all Female vocalists during her reign. Her voice was provacative and sensual, there is not one Female entertainer that is out there today that can compare. I felt so privileged to see her perform just before she passed away, she put on one hell of a show. May she rest in Peace, she was one beautiful Lady.
back at ya mr. musikrnb, what beautiful words you express about ms. hyman. i could not have said it no better. beautiful song and deep words to live by. thanks for sharing!
why not me lets look at why them? Because it is truly a blessing to be able to give love unconditionaly and a sin to not be able to accept this gift. BAM its not u its them
Thank you for posting this beautiful track. I was very fortunate to have seen Phyllis Hyman in concert in London in the 80s. I can say with all honesty it was the best concert I have been to because it may not have been the longest performance, but her voice was just so perfect, you would have thought she was in a recording studio. My favourite singer of all time and it's very sad she died so young.
believe it or not men feel this way too , alot of women nowadays are only looking for what a man can do for them not at what can be built together. Its just as hard to find a woman who will love you in "in spite of as well as because of " who you are . . . I believe that Ms.Hyman's voice elegantly proves that pain and disappointment is universal . . . wish I had met you when . . .RIP
I have to say, Anita Baker and this lady are my all time favourite female singers.
They both sing songs with meaningful lyrics and beautiful melodies. The only female singer I like today is Alicia Keys, she can also sing some gorgeous songs.
omg im speechless...she sang dat song..i mean, wow..she was just amazing...dat song was so personal, heartfelt, and real..."Why not me, is it a crime to be who i was meant to be? Why not me, doesn't everyone deserve to find their dream?" wooh, poignant question..who of us hasnt asked this ? at some point in our lives
Wow....just wow is all I gotta say, I was gonna use this to make a beat out of but forget about it...this song is just...wow..Im absolutely speechless as to how beautiful this song really is...after the 3 minute mark, this song becomes an absolute masterpiece......at the 3:18 mark when she sings "why not me" its just sounds so heartbreakingly beautiful.....
I've heard several times that Phyllis recorded this song in 1 "take". She read the lyrics, told the band she was ready...and the rest is history. That woman was untouchable. Class and phrasings like Nancy Wilson. DAMN I MISS HER!!!
I now understand ms. Hyman pain. she just wanted someone to love her, for her. not what she had, when she was on this earth. she just wanted true unconditonal love.
I agree - but ultimately isn't that what we all want? What is so extraordinary and fascinating about Phyllis' music is that she used her pain and issues to fuel her artistry. Every time someone says they understand, they truly get it or get her - she accomplishes her goal. She makes us feel what she is singing. She helps us to identify. What an awesome talent she was, is and forever will be. Don't you agree?
First time I hear this song and is now one of my favorite songs of her because I can relate and as well other people who ask the question "Am I not enough?"
Absouletly love this song. I've been listening to Phyllis all day today!!
THANKS FOR POSIING THIS VIDEO, "WHY NOT ME" by Phyllis Hyman.
It's the 1st time I heard this song and my toes literally curled. Any woman that's lonely or alone MUST hear this beautiful record -- it's almost a testimonial.

We are all enough in this crazy world. Phyllis Hyman was one of a kind.
A true voice that felt each song through her Soul. No one to this day can
match her voice of True Spirit. Wonderful post and song. Many blessings. 8-)

I am so here right now. I believed I found the right one finally, but its like we can't get it together. It shouldn't be this hard in the beginning.
