  • i love you so much for putting this up

caress of steel is such an amazing album

  • Do you have the Fountain of Lamneth somewhere? I've always wanted to hear it live.

  • @ATK101893 sorry... wish I did

  • @ChristellaKury Have they ever actually played it live? I saw in an interview that the members of Rush don't even remember themselves had they played live.

  • @ATK101893

Here's a setlist from Jan 10th 1976 - Fly By Night Beneath, Between And Behind Bastille Day I Think I'm Going Bald By-Tor And The Snowdog In The End Making Memories Anthem The Fountain Of Lamneth Lakeside Park The Necromancer Best I Can In The Mood Working Man Finding My Way Drum Solo Encore: What You're Doing

  • @ChristellaKury Aggh, just knowing that two songs before this one was the Fountain of Lamneth is driving me crazy XP It's a very underrated work of art and nothing short of a masterpiece. Probably my favorite of the Rush epics.

  • If money were no object, I'd rent a small auditorium and have them play this entire album for my birthday. OK. So, I'm a little weird. So what!

  • @rushnut1958 I'd sell my house and kids and be sitting right there beside you....(hope my wife doesn't read this)

  • What's with bars on the screen? Love the link, but why obscure the film with the logo? And the bar across the middle of the screen? And they don't link to anything? I have this on boot cd. I wish I could see the whole screen. I appreciate that someone would go to the trouble of putting this up. Don't get me wrong I love it! I can only assume that's the way it came to you and yoiu're not responsible. No offence, but bummer! Still friggin great thiough! Goin straight to part 2!

  • @Evster2012 It came this way - There time an date running behind it. From what I understand this whole concert (video not audio) will feature on the time machine DVD - hopefully without the bars.

  • Damn it. IF ONLY I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE!!!

  • Reel to Reel with huge amps then you go see Alien in Dolby

  • I came

  • @MrZivax

    and they saw and conquered

  • Thanx.... Bro... Nice Bootleg...

  • I have always loved this song, even more than 2112

  • @treyreznor this as well as fountains of lamneth are absoultely fantastic songs...i dont know why COS was so poorly received...but its not quite 2112...but awesome none the less...nothing is 2112

  • AWESOME!!!!!

  • Rockin roll!!!!

Undeniably incredibly great musicians and great dudes!!!

Superior lyrics, stage performance and rockin roll!!!

Heros of guitar, bass, vocals, and drums always!!!!

  • I don't give a fuck what the critics say, Caress of Steel's wonderful and it has to be one of my all-time favorite Rush albums!

  • @Andrewoid95 agreed COS has two epic songs that for some reason are overlooked by the masses...but not the true rush fans...

  • @ThePass1967 I think "I Think I'm Going Bald" is funny, but I also like "Lakeside Park".

  • @Andrewoid95 like em both...plus bastille day is fantastic...

  • @ThePass1967 Ahh, I completely forgot about Bastille Day just now. But yes, incredible song.

  • @Andrewoid95 I agree. . . Caress is my 2nd favorite Rush album behind Hemispheres. . .probably followed by 2112

  • @robmelone I think Rush got better and better progressively from the their first album to Hemispheres in every aspect. I caught them right at the end of this. My first Rush album was Hemispheres - the red vinyl version with the gatefold sleeve and poster - which I bought for myself with my 13th birthday money, 2 weeks and two days after it was released. I played it everyday for six months straight. My first concert was Rush at Ivor Wynne Stadium which was Aug. 24th 1979.

  • @nkmcfrln This was long after Pink Pop which was June 4th, 1979. I think this was the true last date for "The Tour of The Hemispheres." I heard something later about a "mini-tour" for Hemispheres and I think this was a date from it. Anybody who's reading this and knows for sure please tell me. Did they play Varsity Stadium around this time? There was a commercial on t.v. for Hemispheres inviting you to join, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart and Geddy Lee for their "(:Tour of The Hemispheres:)"

  • @nkmcfrln Holy Shit! I just searched myself and found out that the Ivor Wynne show was the 6th date on the Permanent Waves "Warm Up Tour." Permanent Waves was released on Jan. 1st, 1980. All of the merchandise was for Hemispheres. They did preview 'The Spirit of Radio' and I think 'Free Will.'

  • I can smell the hemp coming out of my computer screen LOL

  • Ultimate Music...

  • dont know wot to say, im blown away....

  • Next to GOD there IS ONLY RUSH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • next to GOD there is RUSH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Music to get stoned to, back in the day of course.

  • would love to hear caress of steel album live, would be an incredible journey.

  • Such a giant leap from their previous album, but of course they were way ahead of their time. Caress of steel had a bad production, it was only untill the c.d. came out that I started to feel it's full power. Great emotional songs, great riffing and drumming and as I stated; before the birth of speed metal was created with this song (the beginning of part 2)

Sometimes it takes a few decades to see things in perspective.

  • Fucking incredible.

  • i've always thought the beginning of this song was very krautrock (ash ra tempel style)

  • christellakury you should be giving a metal!! for uploading one of the most underated albums of the 70's, this was one great show i saw, when i was younger...thank you!

  • Holy CRAP this was VIDEO'ed?!!! There was only like 2 live performances of this in 1975! Amazing!

  • this is my favorite rush jam. As an album though? i don't know. I think I'm going bald is pretty bad.

  • @brendanxtrom Come on its at least got some funny lyrics. Its not their worst song like everyone always says.

  • isn't this about tolkien's lord of the rings?

    great song

  • Rush's self-proclaimed masterpiece is way under rated. Caress of Steel is Rush's best album and maybe even the best purely musical album in history. The musical talent involved to write songs like the Fountain of Lamneth and the Necromancer rivals any Bach or Beethoven for pure instrumental genious and craftsmanship.

It just doesn't get any better than this. So do yourself a favor, turn off all the lights in your house, light a couple candles, and listen to this song at maximum volume!

  • @70sonicboom Agree, though "I Think I'm Going Bald" is not quite as lofty as Bach! :)

  • @70sonicboom Caress of Steel is without doubt my favourite Rush album, but it`s certainly not the best purely musical album in history. It does indeed take a lot of musical talent to write songs like The Necromancer and Lamneth, but what about The Gates of Delirium or Close to the Edge by Yes. Alex Lifeson wasn`t lying when he said (after seeing Yes live in Toronto, during a break in the recording of Caress of Steel in July 75) "we didn`t want to finish the album".

    Still, this is awesome stuff

  • @Johnnywr FOL and The Necromancer..two Epic Songs...Needs to be listened to more than a few times though to capture its true greatness

Yet my eyes are drawn toward

    The mountain in the east

    Fascinates and captivates

    Gives my heart no peace

    The mountain holds the sunrise

In the prison of the night

'Til bursting forth from rocky chains

    The valley floods with light

  • @70sonicboom Agreed, oh how many girlfriends I've tried to do that with. Futile most of the time. So yeah this is my favorite rush youtube. Its absolutely amazing listening to alex recreate this. For so many years I thought well hes just a genious improving in the studio but this stuff is meticulously crafted and it shows here for the first time.

  • some of the heaviest guitar ripping of all - time included in this song

  • A RUSH CLASIC.

  • One of my favorite Rush songs too. And I agree, highly underrated album. The Necromancer was always a favorite. So underrated and never played after this tour I believe...sad...You better play this when I see you in April ,Rush!!!!!!

  • slight sound of Robin Trower?....still a delight to listen/watch

  • I am so greateful for this one simple recording of the one song I loved so much as a boy, and one of Lifesons greatest solos (first two), and never thought Id ever hear it played live. I thank whoever it was that took the time & effort to record this concert. To hard core fans like me, who also play their music in a band, it is a true gem amoung gems. Like finding a lost contata of Bach, or a symphony of Beethovens. Hats off to you....God bless

  • where can i get this footage on DVD?? they should open the vaults for the fans

  • Caress of Steel...Most underrated album of all time, period.

  • RIGHT LET'S STOP MESSING ABOUT!!

Try playing Lee's bass lines (and singing) simultaneously, Lifeson's guitar riffs/arpeggios and solos, and finally Peart's syncopated drum rhythms. None of the above is easy to perform.

The "musicians" in many of the so-called bands of today would be completely and utterly out of their depth i.e. bands like say McFly or U2. Rush's complicated awesome music could well be described as being on a "timeless wavelength"!!

    Does anyone else agree?

  • I saw Rush in the O2 Arena, London, about three months ago. Essentially, the played a modern (to my mind) first half, then closed with all of Moving Pictures. However, I had almost forgotten all their pre-2112 material. I did like your comments about musical ability. I used to play the guitar and could do the Lifeson stuff - well, after a fashion. You're right: one thing I could never do was play and sing simultaneously. But, nor can BB King-he ain't bad. Listen to U2's When Love Comes to Town.

  • See The Thrill is Gone for a bit of rather good blues. BBK and Pavarotti.

  • thank you ChristellaKury

  • every new rock song now sounds like emo music it is kinda sad i write prog music but i have no band then again im 14

  • The thing with Caress Of Steel is that it was too much a development for such a young Hard Rock band. It`s an album with amazing potential as Terry Brown said on the Beyond The Lighted Stage documentary, but to me it didn`t work back then because it`s very different from the previous album of almost pure Hard Rock music: Fly By Night. Note that I say ``almost´´, By-tor & the Snow Dog was included there. : )

  • They don't make 'em like this any more :)

    Thanks for sharing this classic!!!

  • EVERYONE email info@rush.com and PLEAD for this next tour. You never know.

  • what a deliciously dark record.

  • Producing Rush had to be one of the easiest and most difficult jobs ever. I bought this tape at the age of 12 so it maybe bought Alex a string for his guitar. He probably needed to money. I wore out the tape.

  • Yes, Caress of Steel & Hemispheres both got really bad reviews and I think they are the 2 best albums they ever made!! It's hard to get accolades when you don't make punk or dance music!!!!!!!! If they make a punk/hip hop/disco record next then maybe they might finally get inducted into the Hall of Fame!? Look at Genesis they made it because they stopped making amazing prog rock & started writing dance music! "I Can't Dance" either Phil!!!

  • It's so sad that this album was the least received of all the Rush albums, even though it was such a great record developmentally. They are so fantastic.

  • Great vids Cristella! This is one of the most intense songs of all time, great musicianship.

  • my absolute FAVORITE SONG OF THEIR"S EVER !!!!

  • Awesome video! This has always been my favorite song. Alex makes that old Gibson sing and cry better in this song than any other.

  • Actually if you want to get picky, it's loosely related to the book the "Hobbit", the precursor to the "Lord of the Rings" epic.

  • @basits It's actually based on the Lord of the Rings

  • @MrIkesimba Halfway through The Hobbit story Gandalf leaves to pursue his ‘pressing business’ to the south. The business is the threat of the Necromancer, who dwells at the southern reaches of Mirkwood. At the start of The Hobbit Gandalf describes how he entered the dreaded dungeons of the Necromancer nearly a century before. The next mention of the Necromancer comes at the end of The Hobbit story when the White Council drove the Necromancer out of Mirkwood.

  • @basits That's all great, but it's still based, loosely, on the Lord of the Rings. The "three helpless travelers" are Frodo, Sam and Gollum. The entire spoken word intro is just a paraphrase of Tolkien's story of their journey into Mordor. The Hobbit has nothing to do with "the Necromancer". It's just a quickly passing, minor reference. There aren't three travelers who journey into the realm of the Necromancer in the Hobbit. That happens in TLOTR.

  • @MrIkesimba So was the song The Wizard by black sabbath "everyone's happy when the wizard goes by". Geezer loved that book.

  • @MrIkesimba No it's not, it is inspired by Lord Of The Rings. There wasn't any dudes from Willowdale walking around in Middle Earth.

  • @SciMasterGeneral I hear you. That's what I was trying to convey when I said "loosely based on"

  • @SciMasterGeneralin "Three travelers, men of Willowdale" The dudes from Willowdale are alex, neil, and geddy. The bands hometown is in the suburb Willowdale in Toronto, Canada.

  • @latentsea

Just Alex and Geddy. Neil grew up outside of St. Catharines Ontario

  • @latentsea Christ oh mighty! We all understand that the three men from Willowdale are RUSH. I understood that when I was seven years old and heard this album! Da!

That was the joke 'no dudes from Willowdale walking around Middle Earth, get it! Da? Of course you don't.

  • @SciMasterGeneral Thanks, like that never crossed my mind in 1978. Your funny, And i like that you speak for all. Three men are not from Willowdale, your positive comments are appreciated. And as far as middle earth i dont get it, seems like it would be hot and the air wouldnt be fresh.

  • @basits

Its about Saruman the White I believe. From LotR

  • @drfunk444 no, about sauron,

  • @drfunk444 mmmm, I`m not sure, Sauron was a Necromancer in LOTR.

  • @Delgift

    yep

  • @drfunk444 Saruman of Many Colours.

  • Hey guys check out our band Panacea. We are heavily influenced by Rush. Please subscribe and we accept ALL friend requests. We already have a few videos out there.

  • oh yea. the guitar solos for the song. 3 solos by Alex Lifeson. i love em all. especially the 2nd solo.

  • LOVE this song, but @ 4:30 it is crushing!! heavy, heavy riff!

  • Holy shit! The fact that you have this footage, you are my idol forever!!!!!!!

  • mdelair420.

I know. I was just cracking a joke. Neck-Romancer (Dracula) get it ?

Anyhow, this song and the whole Caress of Steel album is fantastic.

And a happy Didacts And Narpets to all you RUSH fans out there. :-)

  • Wish "All The World's a Stage' were reissued as a double cd with these tracks as bonus tracks. I am certain they played a longer list at that show than what is on the cd itself.

  • 6:53

  • Did I mention: HANDS DOWN THE GREATEST ALBUM RUSH EVER CREATED?

  • Always thought Geddy should have got a cameo on LOTR. He was so into it in his early days and his music so represtened all that Tolkin was trying to say. I could definatly see him as an elf! This aint dracula mf'rs this is God aka Tolkin! Man was a freakin' alien just like Michelangelo and Einstein. Sent here to move the human race...........................................................................................on

  • @fatdogtavern yes i just said that.who else has a all seeing eye but sauron the bad as necromancer of all times.peace

  • Fall asleep at a Rush show were you on drugs??

  • Intro is stolen from Trower, 'Bridge of Sighs'. I actually fell asleep at the Hemispheres show. These guys are a bore.

  • @tatsandteles Someone could play any riff in the world semi-clean with a vibe and alot of folks think it's somehow a copy of "Trower."

  • @tatsandteles

Blasphemy..Hemispheres is one of the greatest albums ever created, and thats a fact. You should consider yourself lucky to have seen them on that tour. Id like to know what you consider to be "good" music that isn't a "bore"

  • @tatsandteles

The lift from Trower is questionable. Tempo is similar.

You gotta be a music snob if you fell asleep at a Rush concert.

  • caress of steel is in my car now. cant wait to see them 2010 tour here in milwaukee. cheers all

  • @drab1313 seen them in milwaukee. loved the second part of show.first part was good but it just wasnt what i wanted to hear.I still left very happy I had shelled out the money to see them

  • It's nice to know that others appreciate Caress Of Steel, it is by far, my favorite Rush album, and The Necromancer my fave track!

  • I don't know what they're talking about. Caress of Steel was a damn good album.

  • Geez...this has gotta be around '74 or '75. Geddy, Alex, and Neil are as good now as they were then. No doubt.

  • best band ever. where did u get this. u must be a roadies kin or relative. thank u 4 this

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • AleX did this ona 6 string!!! I thought the ending was done on a 12 string

  • who has this i love it

  • this footage is legendary...i love it

  • A haunting ballad indeed!

  • anything Rush oriented is an automatic 5 stars

  • "Mindless empty spectors"

    Like Nancy Pilosi?

  • LOL, LIKE ALL POLITICIANS..

  • Man. I love weird grey bars and RUSH!!!

  • One of my favorite Rush songs. And I agree, highly underrated album.

  • My god,i just love this.Cool upload.

  • I love the intro on this song!

  • Didnt know video footage from this period of Rush's career existed! This is cool!

  • holy shit....my favorite!sooooo wicked.

  • the video is from caught in the act 1976

  • This song is about Count Dracula.

    After-all, wasn't he a .....'neck romancer'...?

  • ha ha, how about this..... this footage isn't rare, it's well done!

  • Correction: It's very well done

  • I stand corrected

  • Lol thats funny, but No, it's actualy about J.R.R Tolkiiens Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Dark lord Sauron was indeed The Necromancer.

  • and the three travlers! they were and dawrfs right? but i dont under stand how by-tor gets pulled into this...

  • The three travlers I think are meant to be Frodo, Sam, And Gollum. And By-tor I beleive is to be Aragorn. As rush intended this to be. In the trillogy Aragorn rode off with the remaining forces from the battle of Minas Tirith/Pellenore Feilds. They rode to the Black gate of Mordor The tower of the teeth. where he destroyed The dark lord Sauron. Aragorn is Prince By-tor

  • I believe Sauron was destroyed by Gollum falling into the fires of Orodruin thereby destroying the ring into which Sauron had poured so much of himself. Aragorn's assault at the black gate was to distract the Eye from the progress of the ring. Ima geek :D

  • Yes, lol. you are correct. BUt I was only following up by what the song say. "BY-tor Slays his foe". Im quite familiar with story. Lol. But yes you are correct

  • Right on. Just couldn't resist..

  • @RedBarchettehx U R

but the main thing is.... this rocks

  • @NASANAZIRACE Sure, and yes it does.

  • @RedBarchettehx

You are a correct geek though

  • No. Its about Sauron. The wizard from Lord of the Rings.

  • You are correct. Sauron the one who follows after Melkor and tries to capture the power of the Silmarils.

  • lol ^_^

  • @whoreratio no its loosly inspired by lord of the rings. talking about sauron eye all seeing believe me. thats why talks of travelers and a great necrooomancer which is not a vampire but a dark magic wizard just another name for one. hope that helps you understand it if you listen to the lyrics theirs no doubt. peace and keep rockin

  • hahahahaha

  • @whoreratio no... just no

  • Indpls Xmas concert 1976 Rush, Bob Seger and Atlanta Rhythem Section opened. All that for $5.50!

  • I've seen RUSH 14 times. Got a bunch of old ticket stubs with $7.00-$10.00 marked on them. I think the last time I saw them it was $45! And still worth every penny! A Farewell to Kings and earlier are still my favorite shows.

  • the footage is from the 2112 tour '76

  • yea it looks like it cuz the movement and singing doesnt go with the the Necromancer

  • epic

  • I'm surprised they played this live, ever. That's ridiculous that there is not a good quality version of this song that has circulated. You gotta wonder if the band has one.

    Iron tears indeed.

  • One of the greatest songs of all time - period

  • I TOTALLY AGREE !

  • You sir are correct.

  • Amazed at how good they sound this early in their career. Thanks for posting.

Saw them in 1990. Imagine seeing them at this time? Would have been mind-blowing to hear some of this stuff when it first hit the market.

  • Saw them in '82

  • Parabéns pela postagem deste vídeo! É o mais raro que já tive a oportunidade de ver. A segunda parte desta música é sensacional!!! Very Good!

  • Alex's guitar work is amazing...love to see this.goose bumps again!!

  • LMAO at the guy saying "the necromancer" in the cery beginning

  • Caress of steel is one of my all time favorite albums, I listen it all the time. Great stuff

  • i wish i could get this on a dvd

  • Nothing bad can be said about Rush.

  • Great song!...Got me through the Army...and Somalia.

  • This is great quality for a bootleg; and a HELL of a performance.

    ...It gave me chills!

  • Goosebumps the whole time I was watching it! Eerie coolness....haha!

  • the road is lined with peril; the air is charged with fear.....

  • how do they keep from blowing up from the awesomeness?

  • i heart caress of steel so much

  • very underrated album

  • First Rush album I heard. Fell in love with them right after I heard this song.

  • this came out when i was a sophmore. as a bass player Geddy became my mentor. he had the first truly legitimate bass sound id ever heard in a big arena. this sounds remarkably good for bootleg. thanks, you brought tears to my eyes.good for the soukl

  • damn it!! i wish they had a live recording of this, why did they think rush fans wouldn't want this great song, i especially love this "no one at the bridge" section of the song, and geddy lee had a damn good voice too, if u don't think so, you try it... harder than it looks, its a shame that his youthful shrills have forever left him

  • haveta agree...i'm a feisty often-obnoxious rush purist and Caress is my favorite...love the long bizarreness and airy excesses a la' yes..

  • love the album. totally underrated. they gotta play some of this live one of these days
