Hahaha, thank goodness you made that mistake, that was a truly instructive mistake - I always was wondering what went wrong when I was following the rules of counterpoint and didn't realize about tritones! Thanks so much.
Must the voice which is contrapuntal to the cantus firmus follow the rule that any interval (greater than a second) between adjacent notes must be retraced, step by step back to the beginning note? Wonderful video by the way!
@fetacheese900 It generally sounds better.I think you could get away with thirds or fourths though. You could also try something like "My Chemical Romance-Welcome to the Black Parade" and start on a large interval, and use an even larger interval to go back down. In the case of that song, it starts on G, goes to G flat, B, and then E. This effective "semitone, third, fifth" motion continues for a bit.
It's just something to think about. You don't need to return to tonic, just a few steps back.
@jollykap Good question. It appears confusing at first because the interval is actually a fifth if you're looking at vertically (E in the bass, B on top). But remember both lines are in the treble clef so the pitches are right next to each other. The previous note to the E of the bottom is an F. This causes a leap of an F to a B (the note on the top staff) which is a tritone. Good question, it confused me for a moment also.
Hey, thanks alot for the videos man, very niiiiice, related to Borat? =) Well anyway, I was wondering when you do the 10th intervall that is allowed, and how much is allowed then, I mean first we went only to an octave but in this video you are about to go to a 10th. Is it allowed to go 12, 13 and so on, except when you reach the triton and 7th again?, so that would be the intervall of 11 and 14 and so on?
thank you very much, I am doing my best to learn but I have no teacher. I read fux and other websites but you have some details that are worded differently. Always good to get a different perspective, and to hear and watch someone explain it rather than just read a "rule" and a static example.

Ciao, nel Dubois le legature non vengono utilizzate in questa specie per cui ad ogni battuta c'è il cambio della nota.

How is it a tritone at 6:20?
jollykap 9 months ago
@jollykap Going between an F and a B is a tritone. I thought he made that very clear.
alreadytakenthe3rd 9 months ago
@alreadytakenthe3rd I'm pretty sure he was just confused by the fact that the leap is from one line to another.

@tuttototaro grazie! Non credo che le farò anche in italiano, comunque il mio inglese è piuttosto elementare - come il mio contrappunto ;)
