Food stamps are basically corporate subsidies. They allow corporations like Walmart to pay substandard wages and the workers can still eat. Thats how shit Walmart wages are without food stamps people would not be able to drive to work, rent an apartment and feed themselves and their kids. They can only do 2 out of 3 of those things barely. Unionize Walmart Republicans and you will save billions on public assistance. Just another fact that you will never hear bloated pig Rush Limbaugh tell u

food stamps are for LOSERS!
stinky lazy fat ass people that want food for free.
thank god that in japan we don't have such stupid programs, because us, the japanese, are hard working people. we even produce cars for the stinky fat americans.
As long as folks on government assistence aren't abusing it, and wasting it on garbage, I have no problem with it.
We have seen big corporations spend their government assistence money on garbage, that's for sure. I imagine a certain percentage of individuals on government assistence do the same, but I have no idea what the percentage is. I don't know if it's really small or really big.
Too bad Cenk didn't mention that the top 14 out of 15 poorest states in our union (based on average income) are RED states and have the most people on welfare. Right-wingers are the most hypocrtical faggots out there. They talk about how much they hate people on welfare yet they know that if they needed it they would be first in line for it. Hey righties...........thank the democrats for that, without them it wouldn't be available for you to use.

When I worked at a supermarket it bugged me to no end to see the things people were allowed to use food stamps on. Fucking brand name Coca Cola? Get real.
hey shithead, maybe they like "name brand coca cola"... what, just because they use food stamps they gotta take the shitty generic brands? Im guessing youve never starved a day in your life.. you get real assface... You may not know it, but Sams choice cola doesnt taste the same as "name brand coca cola"... Instead of Mt. Dew, you'd rather to poor people buy Mountain lightning? Youre whats wrong with this country, stop judging people and grow up... bag the groceries and shut the fuck up...
The government shouldn't be buying them any kind of cola at all you fucking cretinous ellipsis-abusing moron. If they're actually starving they should buy, I don't know, food?
and soda isnt food? you are a real jerkoff... why dont you starve for a week then tell me that if you could, you wouldnt buy the best of everything... yes, even "name brand coca cola"... it may mean nothing to you, but if your kids bring over some friends and they see "name brand coca cola" in the fridge the will think, "hey, these guys are doing alright". but you dont know nothin about that. your mommy and daddy always bought you the "name brand" stuff didnt they? thats why you have no respect
Well those kids can learn to have less superficial friends. By your retarded logic the government should buy all poor people flat-screen tv's and ipods.
I grew up in an orphanage, and I can assure you we didn't expect frivolous things like pre-diabetus-inducing syrup water, much less the overpriced over-marketed version that tastes exactly the same as store brands.
yeah, my logic is fucked up?! when a kid is young, i can just say "have less superficial friends"... do you even remember when you were a kid? kids say what they think, they dont consider feelings or the situation youre placed in... and im sorry you grew up in an orphanage, i feel bad for you... but judging and attackin the poor for what they buy isnt the way to make things better... understanding and compassion are... hope you are ok, seriously... peace
The problem is simple. They tax you and pay farmers subsidies to not grow things (Fallow Program), and dole out $17 billion a year on average to artificially inflate the cost of basic commodities, then they come back and tax you again to pay for the food stamp (excuse me...nutritional assistance program) and the only one who is really profiting from this is the unelected and unaccountable bureaucracy administering these programs. This government is not the solution America... it IS the problem!
Maybe the REAL reason so many people are on food stamps is the United States Government cannot seem to balance a budget and continue their wreckless policy of creating money out of thin air. They believe that monetizing debt is the way to financial success. Debt is NOT wealth no matter what name you slap on it. They want us to spend when we really should be saving. Everyone will be on SNAP before too long because our economy is being scientifically designed to FAIL.
I actually agree with u there. The bottom line is that wars are never easy and they're better of not started in the first place, esp when there are no clear objectives.
Iraq yes, Afghanistan no. He actually promised to send more troops into Afghanistan which he felt had been neglected by Bush in favor of Iraq. Troop withdrawal from Iraq has begun and is scheduled to be completed by June next year.
If u wanted to be honest, u'd admit that things were always going to get much worse b4 they got any better. I personally think the president put an overly optimistic spin on things during the campaign. That doesn't take away from the very serious challenges he inherited when he took office.
If things get better a year or two down the road, will u lose ur cynicism? Will u admit u were wrong? Somehow I don't think so!
u have to be dog poor or have a house full of kids to get approval for the assistance. i only make 9.50 an hr and struggle day to day to survive. i tried to get a little help from the government but was only approved for $6.00. what can i do with that? buy an apple? it's not fair.
Just out of the open guys... I see alot of people talking about people selling their 500$ food stamps for 200$ to buy drugs... How do these guys buy themselves food then?
My question to you is what drug infested community do you live in? Assuming what you're saying is true that doesnt affect the need or usefulness of the Food Stamp program. Sounds like to me you should be more worry about your community's drug problem then these drug addicts abusing the Food Stamp program. Solving the drug addict problem will help solve the Food Stamp abuse problem in your area and clean up your streets.
I was addressing that question to the people furder down on the wall in hope for a logical answer.
You interpretated it into something it was not ment to be, I was only trying to say to the critics that selling your 500$ food stamp for 200$ would be idiotic, even if you were a serius drug addict... We all got to eat no mather what condition.
I keep seeing people talk about "low cost" and "healthy" food. Where do you shop at?! Compare the prices on chuck ground beef to leaner ground beef and healthy alternatives like ground turkey. Where is this cheap food? Or pasta when you compare regular pasta to whole wheat? How about with bread? Healthy cereal compared to sugar packed cereal? Canned vegetables to fresh?
And occasionally buying a treat for a family with children shouldn't be a problem.
@orpiment99 It's a fact of life that unhealthy food will always be cheaper than the healthy alternatives. For the reason that sugar and fat will be less expensive than the raw materials used. Bascially, if you want to have the cheap healthy lifestyle you need to bake your own bread and seed your own crop.
thats what you got to love about the gop, they use food stamps and then bitch about others useing them. then they vote for the rich guy because they think there rich.
I don't think anyone is trying to make that argument. Some just find it annoying that the standard Conservative line is that programs like the Food Stamp program just incentives people to be lazy and the majority of people on the program are leeching off the system and are "stealing" their money. However when you talk to conservatives who need these programs it's suddenly a necessary evil that should be tolerated. I think you can understand why some might have a problem with that.
I have yet to encounter any conservatives who are against the food stamp program. They might have something against the way it's organized (the name and credit card, and yes this happened under Bush), but the idea of poor people in need of it getting some food to feed their family I have never really heard any negative reactions over. I don't know where these conservatives are. Maybe they reside up in Cenk's head.
I've had the Food Stamp conversation with many at my job and some of the more reasonable people on blogs and the message has been almost universal, the Food Stamp program incentives people to be lazy and become dependant on the government. They argue that lowering tax rates and limiting government spending would help most of the people in need of the Food Stamp program by letting them have more money to begin with and those that still need help should look into charities and good neighbor works.
Well, I have heard from some people too that this is a danger with the program. It still doesn't mean they want to get rid of it altogether. Maybe the people you have talked to believes it, but none I have encountered.
Regardless of how you feel about the program I believe since it exists right now if you need the help get it. I realize some have abuse the program but just about every government program is being abused by someone somewhere. To me that alone doesn't negate any usefulness these programs may have and isn't much of an argument to get rid it. To me it's perfectly ok to say program A is an abomination and then use program A if you really need it.
Woo Hoo go George Bush! He wasn't a complete fuck up then.
Ol' Dirty Bastard never had a problem with food stamps < My fellow hip hop fans will understand that one.
Conservatives are so fucking stupid. This just proves they really don't understand how hard life is for poor folk. They have no idea, nor do they intend on finding out.
"yes u ugly CUNT...ALOT [sic] OF PEOPLE! when I send you the pictures take them and shuv it up your fat anal hole. Depending on where u are u can see lines of people standing with food stamps in their hands eventhough [sic] they have a brand new mercedes benz [sic] parked outside the grocery store. By the way cunt...get educated and learn how to spell! Cocksucking [sic] whore! hahahaha...put a stick up your ass now that your at it! I HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN IT OKAY?"
Funny... its as if this is the first time he heard about all these millions on food stamps... Wasn't it a problem when there were 2 million on food stamps or maybe if there are 10 million, isn't the problem big enough then....? Current problems 1. 17% unemployment 2. 37 million unisured 3. 36 million on food stamps 4. how many homeless are there now(tent citys) 5. Financial crisis 7. Iraq 8.Afganistan and on and on....
Don't tell me they have an ethnically, religiously and culturally homogeneous population, too!
Were they isolated by sea from the warfare and strife that ripped Europe for all the centuries following the Roman Empire to the Second World War? I can't believe it!!!
Wow, I suppose there is absolutely nothing to be learned from them after all.
During the second world war the allied occupied the country in 1941 only 23 years after it's partial independence from, Denmark.
Now, let's move from the history lesson to the main point:
Running a small town is quite different from running one of the most populous nations on the Earth. Their situation might be interesting, but I question how relevant it is to make use in a country with hundreds of millions of people.
Yeah, I got your point the first time (though I'm not sure their 1940 allied occupation was much like what the Continent went through in the 9th century, but, whatever). And I'm sure you get my point, too.
I'll tell you what, I'll drop the sarcasm, you can drop the condescension and we'll go our separate ways agreeing to disagree. Agreed?
You surprise and disappoint me. You seem smart enough for some simple deductive reasoning and informed enough to be familiar with basic economic/philosophical stances circulating today.
So I'll spell it out for you - a society that allows a lot of people to get very, very rich (ours) will also end up with a lot of poverty. A society that does not (Iceland), won't.
Income disparity is at an all-time high here now. Outcome? Lots of food stamps.
I would say 300,000 is a pretty big US town after all there is alot of smaller towns in USA, Wasilla had only around 6000 ppl and it is now world (in)famous and it is an american town.
Of course is it mega cities as New Nork and Los Angels but they arent so many
It would place Iceland as among the US 57th largest cities, right under Bakersfield, California. Thank you for the update on the demographics. And you believe running a country of 300,000 people is just as difficult as running a country with millions of people and that the same policies would work?
"size doesnt realy mater if the pwoer from above is delgated and decentralized but resources are divided and shared"
Yes, this worked out really well in the Soviet republic, didn't it? I guess this is why China was adopting free market policies and managed to break free from the role of a developing nation these past 20 years.
Good intentions and strong opinions does not feed a people.
Wrong soviet had power centralized, it could be compared if USA needed all its orders and decissions from washington and dtstes shouldnt have anything to say
And how do you suppose that resources are divided and shared unless there is a governing body delegating power to these local governing bodies? What if the local population do not want to divide or share their resources? Are you basically giving me some utopia from the back of your head? I do not see it as any evidence that running Iceland is the same as running the US. Guess what, the US already have local democracy.
Let me try to get a neutral look on things here in relations to population.
USA: 307 Mill.
EU: 500 Mill.
Smallest State US: Wyoming 520 000
Iceland: 330 000
In other words, you can compare Iceland to be a small EU state, and further to be a US state. What fails in Iceland might aswell fail on a state level in the US, and if all the states impliment "this" then they might all fail.
It is not that simple ofcourse, but I think this line of thinking was what he wanted to bring forth...
Run back to the beginning of the thread. Read Eyelean5280's original comment. It was basically a comment on the economy of Iceland compared to the US. I know some people believe the Nordic model would be great for the US, however I wonder if they have really taken into consideration the logistics of a project like that. Not all EU states are run like the Nordic countries, most are not even close. The question is not what fails in Iceland, but what works. And would that work on a large scale?
As my politics class thought me: "Some will work, some will not, some will only work for a couple of generations or decades, and some need a couple of generations to work."
The US have very different challenges state to state, and they would need different approaches. The "Nordic" version may work in some states however.
But why Iceland? They went bankrupt and basically hit the same spike as the US. The Scandinavians were the ones to prove resilient. (Sweden, Norway, DK.)
I believe Iceland was brought out as an example due to there not being any more homeless due to the national bankruptcy.
And just a small note on Sweden, they are close to bankrupt as well. They have been hit very hard by the financial crisis. Also they have a huge immigration to handle. Basically Norway's BNP right now is larger than that of Sweden. I give the Swedes 10-20 years before they either must make large adjustments to their welfare state or go under.
Well, their debt is only 29 billion dollars over 10 million people. That is calculated after their own bailout package. With a large involvement in the auto industry, mechanics and international trade, their GDP depends on a stable marked. When the upturn is coming, I'm sure they will pay of their debt quickly.
Still, if they get a policy of doing nothing then ye, they would have a hard time.
But mind you, 10-20 years in politics is a long time!
My estimate is around 78 billion dollars over 9 million people, however that's not important. They are currently changing their demographics into a society that will most certainly lead them into a civil war or at least inner turmoil and unrest. I am certain they are just 10-20 away from bankruptcy and possible war.
I looked at riksgalden and put a se behind that. States approx. 1,100.000.000.000 SEK debt.
About the civil war, you can pretty much read the writing on the wall. Look at Bosnia and Kosovo and then compare it to growing tensions in Sweden. Then add a failing welfare system. Someone will be blamed for it, and not without good reason. The reason Europe is pretty calm these days is for one reason only, a pretty good economy. Once the welfare system crumbles blood will spill onto the streets.
I did'nt see much blood in the streets of Iceland though... And they went completly bankrupt...
Why would Sweden react more extreme? They don't got the ethnical problems of Bosnia and Kosovo, which was a conflict about pritty much everything other than economics.
Again, Iceland is a small homogeneous society. It's like a small neighbourhood community. They somewhat feel connected to each other through blood and culture. Societies like that rarely get the civil wars.
Sweden will quite soon enter a demographic shift. Once the immigrants start making up a larger percentage of the population there will be unrest. Already there are ghettos in Sweden, but swedes still have places they can move in order to leave the parallel cultural society for a while.
The Swedish make up of 88-90% of the population, and 4-5% are Finish or Native Sames.
2-3% would also mainly be Norwegians, Danish, German, French and other close by countries.
And these people basically got the same etnical pathern.
5%-6% are "none ethnical" in a sence, which ain't really that much.
I don't really see how this group of people can make any civil unrest eider, Sweden is a very liberal people and would'nt initiate a ethnical cleansing.
First of all that statistic is not really correct, as they often tend to lump in second generation of immigrant descent into the Swedish block. Secondly, you are forgetting that 30-50% of children currently born in the major cities are of immigrant descent. Thirdly the swedes are liberal currently because of their needs being taken care of, however if the economy fails (which I am certain it will) they will not be as liberal. As you are intelligent, I am certain you have heard of the Weimar rep.
Maybe, but the great depression for Germany was way worse than the situation for Sweden right now. Also the path to radicalism was way shorter considering the unfair punishment received from France.
Sweden have no enemy, so they would need no radicalism of this sort. Most of Swedens problems would be delt more effeciently with peacefully. Also most of their debt is to countries Swedish friendly, like Norway, who don't really have any rush in getting their money back, like the US had in 1929.
In my opinion they have a parallel cultural society, and notice the use of parallel instead of multi as they like to call themselves, which is basically a recipe for disaster. The immigrants do not contribute as much as they take from the Swedish society, so the mass import of immigrants is basically a recipe for economic decline. Btw. the hyperinflation etc. happened b4 1929, so what are you talking about? Let's just look at Sweden in 20 years. I do believe I it will not be a pretty picture.
many people are on food stamps not on a need to have basis, they are on them because they meet the requirements to receive them so they take advantage of it. there is a big difference and it is a cause for great debate.
well, i can give you an estimate because it varies... you have to make less than around $13000 a year and you have to own less than around $2000 worth of items. the most you can get is $200 a month.
See its always the ones who sit and talk about people on foodstamps but then when they need them, they have this somewhat understanding but I still not like them attitude. That is so nasty. Its like you still have a Pharoah heart in a sense!~
logoth80: I agree. It's supposed to be a 1st world country, and THE remaining global superpower.
It says to me that the country has its superpower priorities wrong.
All the money in the world for a military budget that they can use to knock over a tinpot dictatorship - some that were funded militarily by them in the first place - but can't get it together to fix their own internal problems.
I get that they help the world, too - and that's appreciated - but you have to help your own.
so that basically means that 12,5 % can't even afford to eat a macdonalds menu for breakfast... damn yeah america is #1 especially in food and healthcare... damn sounds more like a 3rd world country to me
I'm surprised that right wingnuts likeBeck aren't spinning this by saying Obama is forcing people to eat government food as part of his socialist takeover of America.
If they are going to live in a fantasy land why not make it a happy one? The reality is that people need people from time to time. Strength comes from unity and compassion not from division and greed.
he did something positive yet he put us in such a shitty situation so that now we have to use that little positive thing he did! damm you george bush!
I remember when I attended Frostburg State University, which is out in Western Maryland up in Appalachia, a lot of people in the region were on foodstamps. This was mostly white rural people. Some of the main ones who complain about poor blacks and Latinos on foodstamps.
These hypocrites don't turn down welfare when it's available for them even though they'll bash everyone else for it (even while they're on it themselves). Lol @ the politically correct name change.
Again more proof of core conservative values: "I'm not poor, so why should I give a shit about poverty?" Nothing matters to them until it's brought to their doorstep.
People do take advantage of the system, you go to the projects and see huge rims and Direct tv dishes and they are on food stamps. Instead of sitting on their ass watching tv all day, they should apply for jobs. Its not everybody, but a lot of people do take advantage of it.
I live in a post-industrial city where the great majority of the population uses such programs. You are absolutely right, it is not the majority who are getting rims & TV dishes.
And yes, it would be lovely if all the chronically underemployed people were out job hunting. Would you please come down here and point out where the jobs are? Because I see no evidence of their existence.
The government gives you (if you qualify) a monthly alotment (?sp?) of money that you can only use for uncooked food, and only at stores that except them, usually supermarkets
well its federal aid for people that qualify for it, but it can only be used to buy food. most states have a system in place now where they use a card like a credit card. but in years past it was a currency that looked a lot like large postage stamps.
I realize this is a bad economy (now), but I am wondering how many of these people are using food stamps because they've overextended themselves with spending can't afford. In other words, they can easily afford the cost of food, but they choose to spend the money on other things, turning the food stamps into a second source of discretionary income.
But, l0gically is saying, you then don't spend money that can then go to pay for the unnecessary brand new car/tv/ps3/etc... that you want but don't need.
Qualifications for food stamps are based on income per member of the family, as is the amount a person/family qualifies for. Children are not a requirement for food stamps.
The $130 that Cenk mentioned is for full benefits. Not everyone qualifies for that.
my food stamps right now our my parents letting me live in my house without rent. It's embarrassing to say, but without them I would be on the streets. it also annoys the fuck out of me cuss I need to move out, I need to spread my wings, but this economy is like a cage.
im on food stamps and my fridge is full hahahah and yes i go to school and work so im far from lazy honestly you people are too anal to take advantage of an amazing opportunity can you for once put your ego's aside and let the government help you or are you too ashamed to tell your friends "im on food stamps" or snap w/e i really dont give a fuck what no one thinks of me as long as im full
@ZzSmacKyzZ same here in college on FS and I don't give a damn what ppl think. Might as well use the system to help me because when i'm out making $60,000 a year it's the same system that's going to tax the heck out of me. In a ways us college students are going to pay the gov back threw taxes
Another change in the program is the use of a debit card for food. I'm sure it helps reduce the stigma. Thanks for the video Turks. The next few years will be tough for folks. The food banks are getting low this time of year. Please give or volunteer if you can!
I and my family were on Food Stamps for about 9 months. I really felt horrible paying for food with FS, but I got over it quite quickly because of 2 things.
1. I did, was at the time, and will continue paying taxes so I will pay ALL of it back in time.
2. I was able to feed my child and my family while still live in our apartment.
To be honest; yes, I bought soda, candy, and on occasion a cake with the FS. But was that all? No, $10 a month at most, with the exception of birthday months.
No, I understand all those restrictions. My mom had to put my family on food stamps way back in the day, and we were relatively responsible with it (we'd use actual money for treats)..but there was another family that we associated with who would send their kids to the store with food stamps to buy themselves candy and soda and whatnot.
I just think again, that food stamps need to be about actual "nutritional assistance", and not allow "treats" like candy, soda, and chips.
why waste the funds on feeding people when we can just make them into something edible.

When I worked at a supermarket it bugged me to no end to see the things people were allowed to use food stamps on. Fucking brand name Coca Cola? Get real.
RichoRosai 2 years ago
hey shithead, maybe they like "name brand coca cola"... what, just because they use food stamps they gotta take the shitty generic brands? Im guessing youve never starved a day in your life.. you get real assface... You may not know it, but Sams choice cola doesnt taste the same as "name brand coca cola"... Instead of Mt. Dew, you'd rather to poor people buy Mountain lightning? Youre whats wrong with this country, stop judging people and grow up... bag the groceries and shut the fuck up...
paclives692002 2 years ago
The government shouldn't be buying them any kind of cola at all you fucking cretinous ellipsis-abusing moron. If they're actually starving they should buy, I don't know, food?
RichoRosai 2 years ago
and soda isnt food? you are a real jerkoff... why dont you starve for a week then tell me that if you could, you wouldnt buy the best of everything... yes, even "name brand coca cola"... it may mean nothing to you, but if your kids bring over some friends and they see "name brand coca cola" in the fridge the will think, "hey, these guys are doing alright". but you dont know nothin about that. your mommy and daddy always bought you the "name brand" stuff didnt they? thats why you have no respect
paclives692002 2 years ago
Well those kids can learn to have less superficial friends. By your retarded logic the government should buy all poor people flat-screen tv's and ipods.
I grew up in an orphanage, and I can assure you we didn't expect frivolous things like pre-diabetus-inducing syrup water, much less the overpriced over-marketed version that tastes exactly the same as store brands.
RichoRosai 2 years ago
yeah, my logic is fucked up?! when a kid is young, i can just say "have less superficial friends"... do you even remember when you were a kid? kids say what they think, they dont consider feelings or the situation youre placed in... and im sorry you grew up in an orphanage, i feel bad for you... but judging and attackin the poor for what they buy isnt the way to make things better... understanding and compassion are... hope you are ok, seriously...

XArchangelofsexX 2 years ago
Maybe the REAL reason so many people are on food stamps is the United States Government cannot seem to balance a budget and continue their wreckless policy of creating money out of thin air. They believe that monetizing debt is the way to financial success. Debt is NOT wealth no matter what name you slap on it. They want us to spend when we really should be saving. Everyone will be on SNAP before too long because our economy is being scientifically designed to FAIL.
roundman3000 2 years ago
It's called SNAP because that's what it's doing to the backbone of the taxpayer.
The problem isn't when someone uses it for a year. The problem is using it for 30+ years and keep shitting out turd kids to keep getting the checks.

And occasionally buying a treat for a family with children shouldn't be a problem.
orpiment99 2 years ago
@orpiment99 It's a fact of life that unhealthy food will always be cheaper than the healthy alternatives. For the reason that sugar and fat will be less expensive than the raw materials used. Bascially, if you want to have the cheap healthy lifestyle you need to bake your own bread and seed your own crop.

What is the point of this video? Conservatives aren't allowed to make use to governmental programs? I'd get foodstamps. Save some money for beer.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
I don't think anyone is trying to make that argument. Some just find it annoying that the standard Conservative line is that programs like the Food Stamp program just incentives people to be lazy and the majority of people on the program are leeching off the system and are "stealing" their money. However when you talk to conservatives who need these programs it's suddenly a necessary evil that should be tolerated. I think you can understand why some might have a problem with that.
deathmetalwolf85 2 years ago
I have yet to encounter any conservatives who are against the food stamp program. They might have something against the way it's organized (the name and credit card, and yes this happened under Bush), but the idea of poor people in need of it getting some food to feed their family I have never really heard any negative reactions over. I don't know where these conservatives are. Maybe they reside up in Cenk's head.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
I've had the Food Stamp conversation with many at my job and some of the more reasonable people on blogs and the message has been almost universal, the Food Stamp program incentives people to be lazy and become dependant on the government. They argue that lowering tax rates and limiting government spending would help most of the people in need of the Food Stamp program by letting them have more money to begin with and those that still need help should look into charities and good neighbor works.
deathmetalwolf85 2 years ago
Well, I have heard from some people too that this is a danger with the program. It still doesn't mean they want to get rid of it altogether. Maybe the people you have talked to believes it, but none I have encountered.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Regardless of how you feel about the program I believe since it exists right now if you need the help get it. I realize some have abuse the program but just about every government program is being abused by someone somewhere. To me that alone doesn't negate any usefulness these programs may have and isn't much of an argument to get rid it. To me it's perfectly ok to say program A is an abomination and then use program A if you really need it.
deathmetalwolf85 2 years ago
Well, I think it's a good idea to keep the program nor do I know anyone who wants to, so I don't understand why you're telling me. But OK.

MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
No! YOU'RE KIDDING!
EyeLean5280 2 years ago
The country is still pretty homogeneous.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Yeah, I got your point the first time (though I'm not sure their 1940 allied occupation was much like what the Continent went through in the 9th century, but, whatever). And I'm sure you get my point, too.

MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
You surprise and disappoint me. You seem smart enough for some simple deductive reasoning and informed enough to be familiar with basic economic/philosophical stances circulating today.
So I'll spell it out for you - a society that allows a lot of people to get very, very rich (ours) will also end up with a lot of poverty. A society that does not (Iceland), won't.
Income disparity is at an all-time high here now. Outcome? Lots of food stamps.
EyeLean5280 2 years ago
small adjustment. 1940, 22 years after. Looked it up.

I would say 300,000 is a pretty big US town after all there is alot of smaller towns in USA, Wasilla had only around 6000 ppl and it is now world (in)famous and it is an american town.
Of course is it mega cities as New Nork and Los Angels but they arent so many
Gripen1974 2 years ago
It would place Iceland as among the US 57th largest cities, right under Bakersfield, California. Thank you for the update on the demographics. And you believe running a country of 300,000 people is just as difficult as running a country with millions of people and that the same policies would work?
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
size doesnt realy mater if the pwoer from above is delgated and decentralized but resources are divided and shared.
So basicly it depends on how much decission needs to coem from the capital city and how much is on local lvl
Gripen1974 2 years ago
"size doesnt realy mater if the pwoer from above is delgated and decentralized but resources are divided and shared"
Yes, this worked out really well in the Soviet republic, didn't it? I guess this is why China was adopting free market policies and managed to break free from the role of a developing nation these past 20 years.
Good intentions and strong opinions does not feed a people.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Wrong soviet had power centralized, it could be compared if USA needed all its orders and decissions from washington and dtstes shouldnt have anything to say
Gripen1974 2 years ago
And how do you suppose that resources are divided and shared unless there is a governing body delegating power to these local governing bodies? What if the local population do not want to divide or share their resources? Are you basically giving me some utopia from the back of your head? I do not see it as any evidence that running Iceland is the same as running the US. Guess what, the US already have local democracy.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Let me try to get a neutral look on things here in relations to population.
USA: 307 Mill.
EU: 500 Mill.
Smallest State US: Wyoming 520 000
Iceland: 330 000
In other words, you can compare Iceland to be a small EU state, and further to be a US state. What fails in Iceland might aswell fail on a state level in the US, and if all the states impliment "this" then they might all fail.
It is not that simple ofcourse, but I think this line of thinking was what he wanted to bring forth...
Crextal 2 years ago
Run back to the beginning of the thread. Read Eyelean5280's original comment. It was basically a comment on the economy of Iceland compared to the US. I know some people believe the Nordic model would be great for the US, however I wonder if they have really taken into consideration the logistics of a project like that. Not all EU states are run like the Nordic countries, most are not even close. The question is not what fails in Iceland, but what works. And would that work on a large scale?
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Ah, interesting.
Crextal 2 years ago
I believe Iceland was brought out as an example due to there not being any more homeless due to the national bankruptcy.
And just a small note on Sweden, they are close to bankrupt as well. They have been hit very hard by the financial crisis. Also they have a huge immigration to handle. Basically Norway's BNP right now is larger than that of Sweden. I give the Swedes 10-20 years before they either must make large adjustments to their welfare state or go under.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Well, their debt is only 29 billion dollars over 10 million people. That is calculated after their own bailout package. With a large involvement in the auto industry, mechanics and international trade, their GDP depends on a stable marked. When the upturn is coming, I'm sure they will pay of their debt quickly.
Still, if they get a policy of doing nothing then ye, they would have a hard time.
But mind you, 10-20 years in politics is a long time!
Crextal 2 years ago
My estimate is around 78 billion dollars over 9 million people, however that's not important. They are currently changing their demographics into a society that will most certainly lead them into a civil war or at least inner turmoil and unrest. I am certain they are just 10-20 away from bankruptcy and possible war.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Well, 26 billions are the official number given from the Swedish Debt Office. I dunno where you take your personal estimate from.
Civil war in Sweden? Why on Earth do you believe that? What are they doing now that are so bad in your eyes?
Crextal 2 years ago
I looked at riksgalden and put a se behind that. States approx. 1,100.000.000.000 SEK debt.
About the civil war, you can pretty much read the writing on the wall. Look at Bosnia and Kosovo and then compare it to growing tensions in Sweden. Then add a failing welfare system. Someone will be blamed for it, and not without good reason. The reason Europe is pretty calm these days is for one reason only, a pretty good economy. Once the welfare system crumbles blood will spill onto the streets.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
I did'nt see much blood in the streets of Iceland though... And they went completly bankrupt...
Why would Sweden react more extreme? They don't got the ethnical problems of Bosnia and Kosovo, which was a conflict about pritty much everything other than economics.
Crextal 2 years ago
Again, Iceland is a small homogeneous society. It's like a small neighbourhood community. They somewhat feel connected to each other through blood and culture. Societies like that rarely get the civil wars.
Sweden will quite soon enter a demographic shift. Once the immigrants start making up a larger percentage of the population there will be unrest. Already there are ghettos in Sweden, but swedes still have places they can move in order to leave the parallel cultural society for a while.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Well, Sweden are only 10 millions.
Crextal 2 years ago
First of all that statistic is not really correct, as they often tend to lump in second generation of immigrant descent into the Swedish block. Secondly, you are forgetting that 30-50% of children currently born in the major cities are of immigrant descent. Thirdly the swedes are liberal currently because of their needs being taken care of, however if the economy fails (which I am certain it will) they will not be as liberal. As you are intelligent, I am certain you have heard of the Weimar rep.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
Maybe, but the great depression for Germany was way worse than the situation for Sweden right now. Also the path to radicalism was way shorter considering the unfair punishment received from France.
Sweden have no enemy, so they would need no radicalism of this sort. Most of Swedens problems would be delt more effeciently with peacefully. Also most of their debt is to countries Swedish friendly, like Norway, who don't really have any rush in getting their money back, like the US had in 1929.
Crextal 2 years ago
In my opinion they have a parallel cultural society, and notice the use of parallel instead of multi as they like to call themselves, which is basically a recipe for disaster. The immigrants do not contribute as much as they take from the Swedish society, so the mass import of immigrants is basically a recipe for economic decline. Btw. the hyperinflation etc. happened b4 1929, so what are you talking about? Let's just look at Sweden in 20 years. I do believe I it will not be a pretty picture.
MrNiceGuy4TW 2 years ago
many people are on food stamps not on a need to have basis, they are on them because they meet the requirements to receive them so they take advantage of it. there is a big difference and it is a cause for great debate.

well its federal aid for people that qualify for it, but it can only be used to buy food. most states have a system in place now where they use a card like a credit card. but in years past it was a currency that looked a lot like large postage stamps.
urmombiznatch 2 years ago
I realize this is a bad economy (now), but I am wondering how many of these people are using food stamps because they've overextended themselves with spending can't afford. In other words, they can easily afford the cost of food, but they choose to spend the money on other things, turning the food stamps into a second source of discretionary income.
l0gically 2 years ago
Discretionary income? You can only buy food with food stamps.

Qualifications for food stamps are based on income per member of the family, as is the amount a person/family qualifies for. Children are not a requirement for food stamps.
The $130 that Cenk mentioned is for full benefits. Not everyone qualifies for that.

I would forage before I would go on food stamps. That shit is just humiliating.

All I think about food stamps is that there needs to be rules where you can't buy anything but food, and I mean candy/soda/snacks are off the table.
On top of that, maybe add bonus value to them for when people need to buy actual food, since it's starting to get a bit expensive.

you can't buy cars or plasma TVs not even soap with food stamps. hence the term food. BIG ass misconception TYT did not help that.
