I would be HONORED to have all those people singing and dancing around me with hamburgers. I just want to tell them that they are so COOL! Of course I'd buy a hamburger from them.
I love the singing in the first song...Judy doing a ridiculous falsetto, Luis loudly off-key. What specific commercial is that a parody of, and is it floating around YouTube anywhere? (The gum song; I'm old enough to know that ancient McDonald's ad.)
Jim Boyd played some of the best remembered characters on The Electric Company.I heard he did some commercials. I hope someone might find some of them. People often confuse him with a singer Jimmy Boyd but that seems to be getting better. Someone said his true birthday is November 11.
I had forgotten all about this healthy parody of consumerism. Reminds me of sketches that showed a skepticism about all the jingles promising us happiness thru consumption... "Carol Burnett Show" and "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" come to mind.
COOL!!!!!! I've been looking for this. I love how they totally freak the guy out with the singing and dancing. It's like going into one of those restaurants where they do a song and dance whenever someone orders a certain item, such as on Welcome Back Kotter when Mr. Kotter worked at this place where they had to dance whenever someone ordered a "Glutton's Gorge."
I doubt if they would - it's a so OBVIOUS parody - the only way they could officially sue is if they could prove if the parody was slanderous or what not - stuff like this goes back to the 50s when the copyright owners of Superman tried 2 sue EC publications 4 their very 1st parody: "Superduperman"
I'm not bragging - seriously - but I know Jim Boyd and just told him those exact words one week ago on the phone. He's stunned we all think that. By the way, he wants your fan letters! Private message me for his mailing address if interested. :)
This is hilarious and totally lost on today's kids. Carol Burnett used to do skits like this on her show too as some poor housewife harrassed by all these people coming into kitchen and spouting insane jingles. Jim is a seriously underrated and underused actor.
I remember the Carol Burnett advertisement skits. I recall one where they incorporated the EF Hutton ad where everyone stopped to "listen."
Jim Boyd was an incredibly funny actor, whether it was in this skit, the Blue Beetle, or The Man J. Arthur himself. Ironically, I thought Loreleis the Chicken was annoying and very unfunny, but if it were not for Loreleis, we wouldn't have had all of other Jim Boyd's great stuff in the first place!
I loved that song too. The way those people love to sing and Jim Boyd looks so perplexed. I also like how in most of these sketches, a lot of the characters wore turtlenecks. They seemed to be the popular style of the 70's.
Holy Fuhck! A Whedon was Head Writer!?!!?!??! SHIT BRICKS!!!

So Silly!!! To think Morgan Freeman went on to be an Oscar winner! I bet HE didn't even anticipate that...

Did they have to get permission from Wrigley's & McDonald's for this skit?
quirpco 2 years ago
This skit was cool, and was probably very clever for the '70s.
But my favorite skit from The Electric Company is the "Lemon-Lime"(?) skit. It had just two actors: Jim Boyd and Morgan Freeman.
Oh man was that something!
Never got tired of seeing that one back in the day.

I think it's supposed to be a parody of the commersh that sang, "You'll like the big long-lasting flavor of Wrigley's Spearmint Gum..."
bandit957 3 years ago
To be fair, none of their singing is all that great--but that's kind of what makes it so entertaining.

Judy Graubart looks so cute in her outfit..and her voice seems to stand out in the "gum" song, too..

Jim Boyd is da Dude. He MADE the Electric Company what it was in later years.
Has anyone else seen that MTV commercial he did in the mid-80's? It was TOO FUNNY!

Customer: Now I have a headache from all your senseless chanting!
Shopkeeper: Did you say you have a headache?
Customer: Yeah.
All: HEAD ON! Apply directly to the forehead! Head On! Apply...
Customer runs out of store screaming like crazy.
Of course, Head On was not around in 1975 but just wondered how TEC might spoof that commercial.

I remember this one! The "you deserve a break today" line would mean nothing to anyone under 33. From the old McDonalds commercials of the 70's.

If there's a vol.3 of TEC, they should include the special "Out To Lunch."
