  • I realize that the attributes for people are the more "personal" items (weight, height, etc.), and the elements within the beginning and end tags for each person are less so, but from a purely coding & database standpoint, what is the real difference? That is, why have some datums as attributes, others as separate elements?

  • but where to use xml ???????????

  • Thanks for the vid, really helped me out!

  • This is a great example of how stupid XML can be used.

  • you can use it for blogs? i dont get the point of using it man , i tought xml's were used by hackers and stuff?

  • Good job man. thanks for the tutorial

  • @stickybuns420 fair enough.

  • Thank you, such an awesome video, I was worrying before i saw this

  • I always thought writing XML was gonna be hard to do, but this video's explanation helped me understand XML better. I just wonder how to actually use that data to display on the web/website.

  • This is a good XML tutorial. XML seems simple and I understand it... I just want to see it in action. There are so many tuts on the basics of XML but no one explains how to use it.

  • Do you always talk this fast?

  • mmm carrots

  • I was hopping you would show a way to display the data in a non raw format. I have a large XML file I am trying to read and I want to view in a better cleaner way then that.

  • Superb Explanation..:)

  • george is a fat fuck

  • And the point? . . .

  • Talk too much - talk active

    less much practice

  • hello there. today is the day that i've decided to learn XML and i regret it, i should've studied it before... but here's a simple question, does all your tags were named by you?? if that so... i can name it whatever i want too?? thanks!

  • @Chiisuchianu Yes, you can. All of the tags and attributes that he typed were created by him and him alone.

  • For web programming in general, in what ways is XML better than JSON? In other words, when would you need to use XML to perform a task that JSON cannot accomplish on its own? For example, XML is used to write a RSS feed for a website. I do know XML, but haven't found the place to apply my XML knowledge other than writing RSS feeds. Thanks for your time and help.

  • Very good tutorial. You explained the usage and the purpose of XML very clearly. Thumbs up!

  • It took 4 MINUTES before he got into the actual tutorial!! Too long of an introduction. Otherwise a decent tutorial.

  • XML is the lingua franca of interchange, it's the power behing our data communication and should be looked at in theocratic means in order to open a wider debate on the use of markup for the future of web development.

  • good job and nice video , thx

  • NICE Video...i bunked class and your video helped me a lot

  • And I can even use Notepad++ on my Windows 7 :D

    Notepad: F***ING INTERFACE NO COLORS

  • This video was very informative. Thank you.

  • This video was very informative. Thank you.

  • couldn't get passed the first fourty seconds of your voice Sparky

  • had to use the normal braces instead of the angular braces because of youtube

  • The author of this video made very big mistakes so this video should not be considered to learn about xml for people.

    1. Giving elements unique names (f.e. (george) (you should rather do it like this: (person)(name)George(/name)(/person))

    2. Adding attributes to names instead of associating these properties with elements.

I think what we learn from this is even if the videos title screen is shiny and the tutor uses expensive professional tools, this doesn't means that the tutorial is good

  • @LearningDude

so where is your excellent video

  • CVomplete waste of time move on!

  • nesamone as sakau

    this iz big bulsiet

  • please change your intro's music... Pleaseeee

  • Yeah, the tutorial starts att 4:14.

  • @almabranca

XML is just text so why not?

  • I think I'm in love with George.

  • what fuckin shit are you talkin about....how caN THERE BE TAGS consisting of people's names.... be specific and maintain generality .....next time do learn and come.

  • Thanks for putting this out. It is a nice little introductory tutorial for people who are totally new to xml.

  • you talk to much I about doing XML and not much on making a XML file.

Next time get to the point

  • good video but u talk too much.. its not necessary and u know that

  • How did he get 12 minutes recorded?

  • very good video !!

  • Thanks for the video. I just started learning about XML, XSL, XSD, DTD and I needed to take a step back and look at the surface in order not to lose focus and this video helped a lot :)

  • lol....are u guys seriously talking shit on this page? lol

  • what tool did you use to record the video

  • Correct me if I am wrong but I think you are so israeli like... you are rude and childish. These guys commit themselves to share their knowledge with everyone and thats what they get from idiots like you.

  • Ok dude but critics can make them only better. I don't need his personal opinions about this.

  • @makuzah

    Got a problem with israelis?

    Stupid idiot..

  • Shut your foolish mouth you child-killer

  • @jew2Hitler

    Fuck you hitler..

  • @ganon167

    Look somewhere else bud.

  • Is there a limit on the number of sub groups?

  • @davidthefat no, you can hav as many as you want

  • thank you this was very helpful

  • I wish there were more tutorials in how to retrieve XML data. Writing an XML document is a joke, but retrieving it is whole different story.

  • Just to append a little more to my question... I mean HOW do I use the XML I write?

    Ty!

    ab

  • It can be used for all sorts of things - you can use it in Flash to create dynamic applications (so you only need to edit the XML file for data) or use the Spry JS in Dreamweaver to create cool little applications for your website ;)

  • Great tutorial.

But now what do I do with it all?

    :O

  • Photoshop CS4 vs. PowerPoint :)))))

  • Very informative. I learned a lot today. Thanks a bunch.

  • Excellent and instructive!

  • I think one needs to learn about databasing to go along with the XML, as well as how to create 'class-like' structures.

This tutorial features the organization of information that repeats itself a lot and would create a file that would seem unmanageable.

  • what is the difference between storing the data as an attribute or as data?

  • Data is data. Sometimes it's not a clear cut choice between an attribute or an element. In those cases, you let experience or preference decide.

  • So you can input XML files into Flash and have it update sections that have scroll bars and extend it with just updating the XML file?

    Please say yes..?

    mm*

  • XML can be used in configuration files, but your Flash code will have to parse that information out and correctly apply it.

  • very smooth presentation BUT YOU DID NOT SHOW THE END RESULT displayed. I was disappointed.

  • @steves02 You idiot, he did show it. That is how xml shows if you open it in a browser! XML DOES NOT DO ANYTHING. XML IS USED TO ORGANIZE INFORMATION NOT DISPLAY IT!!!!!!

  • @steves02 yes he did he ran it in FireFox...

  • nfgfgcfcbcvbcvbcbcb

  • Wow dude 5/5 you make it seem so exiting xD im subscribing ^_^

  • Thanks for the vid!

Can this be used as a substitute for storing data other than SQL Tables?

  • It can be used as a substitute or in complement. XML is just a way to describe data that is embedded with the data. Relational databases help in storing that data, in whatever format it may come.

  • Thanks man

  • i aassume this xml data can be formatted any way one wants with CSS??

  • Yes, it can be formatted using CSS. However, 'best practice demands that xslt (extensible style) be used with xml. If you want to format the data within an xml doc you can use [CDATA[[ before including your html tags, otherwise you'll need to create an external xsl doc and link it to the xml doc, just as you would css to html. It gets very complicated importing data into existing html doc. Luckily Dreamweaver includes all the xpath code in separate file.

  • wats point in xml ?

  • I've developed pages for years, and I cant for the life of me figure out why the hell I should use XML, vs simply using delimited files, or SQL databases and just read in the information.

These seems like a pain in the ass.

  • XML isn't the best format for everything, but sometimes you don't want the overhead of a database call, or you would rather have more descriptive data than a simple delimited list.

  • Thanks for boiling that down for me I can't wait to see what I can do with it.

you are the best teacher on the tube

  • me too...wanna know how to embed this into other languages!!
