I remember seeing part of "The Final Chapter" when it first aired(I think I was probably 8 or 9 years old). I remember the scene where Aaron Jastrow is killed in the gas chamber(I was too young to understand the meaning of what was happening.). I have this mini series on DVD now.
Pug Henry and his family were a bit like Forrest Gump in that every possible historically significant event of the war seemed to include them in some way. All that said- Herman Wouk did a very credible job in getting his facts correct and spared the reader the melodrama that many other writers would have gleefully wallowed in. The television mini-series were both as well done as one could expect- but Wouk's writing is really the best way to enjoy the experience.
@BenAliGtor, very well put. The entire mini-series including The Winds of War and the followup, War and Remembrance were very well written in a manner that a World War II novice could glean enough actual history from the background of the story to have some understanding of the war. Similar novels of history include Jeff Shaara's historical novels Rise to Rebellion and The Glorious Cause. Another mini-series was John Jakes North and South based on his novels.
As far as I know you can still only get these series on Region 1 DVD which are no good in Europe,it's a pain as I would love to watch this series again.....much better than the rubbish we get served up these days on tv in the UK.
Great film.I am Polish, my country has been completely ruined during Second World War.Stalin and Hitler murdered thousands of Poles but in my country in 1939-45 was the largest resistance.
What US Navy destroyer portrayed the USS Northampton in this movie? I served on a DDG-2 class guided missile destroyer (USS Henry B. Wilson), and the ship used for the scenes showing the Northampton looked like a DDG-2 class ship.
A classic tv mini-series, I remember it very well along with the Winds of War and North and South. Tv was worth watching back in the 80's, not today reality shows have runied tv.
The term "Reality Show", I suspect, was invented by the industry to cover up for the fact the shows are actually "Contest Shows" and have low production values (i.e. cheap to make). The cost-to-profit ratio is tremendously in favor of the business and has little or no artistic value.
Until people demand quality, I'm afraid modern TV will remain, largely, a wasteland.
@RodCornholio I agree that these Contest Shows have little or no artistic value and tv has gotten lazy. They think today it's too much work to come up with a mini-series like this one or it won't interest people today like it did back then. Tv really caters to the young people and their shows are all fluff and no substance.
@americanhellcatf6 I agree. There are two many reality shows. There should be more great mini series like War and Remembrance, North and South, and Lonesome Dove.
I watched this mini series over twenty years ago. Great characters acting in this film, the love story of Jews-[Israel] woman and American servicemen in World War II. Music opening from begin to ended, touching-haunting and amazing -Where can download this full mini series?
One of the most touching mini series I've seen. This music is so haunting and @loron91423 it make me get choked up just hearing the opening theme thinking about how horrible and yet wonderful the things these characters went through. Highly recommend owning this movie! =)
Curtis was awesome. He is sorely missed. Of the late sixties of through the end of his life he gave us some of televisions finest moments to be sure. And Robert Cobert's brilliant themes,,,,,,, I could listen forever!!!!!
I spend most of my time crying infront of YouTube because of the memories I get to enjoy. This has a special meaning for me because a dear friend Bill Schallert performed in this. God Bless
@loron91423 Bill Schallert, really? I always enjoyed his acting from the professor on Dobie Gillis to Patty Duke to anything he did with his long resume. I watched this series, most excellent as was Winds of War.
@loron91423 if your friend was William Shallert, I must say that I remember him from hundreds of progrmas. He was wonderful. You were indeed blessed to know him.
Who wrote this majestic, haunting and captivating musical score to this wonderful series?....it is quite sad in places, almost as sad as losing both my legs and an arm in a most tragic farm-yard accident involving totally unsafe thresher machinery.
I completely agree. I was recently watching series 8 of Family Guy, and this theme was used as an opening for the episode "Road to Germany". I couldnt remember what series it was from, then it clicked: "The Winds of War/War & Remembrance" What amazing series they were. These days all we get for our buck is X Factor, Coronation Street and Fern Fucking Briton. If these were reshown they would be HUGE again.
Don't you diss Fern Britten - she managed to get Blair to confess to war crimes, not even the Chilcot inquiry managed that, she's an interrogator par excellence, and pretty svelte these days at that!
I remember watching this on TV when I was about 13 or 14, same with the Winds of War prior to this, I wish they would put these on TV again, it's very expensive on DVD.
The music sounds so lush, sad, beautiful, foreboding, and heartbreaking at the same time. Who was responsible for the musical masterpiece behind the credits?
The theme for "War and Remembrance" (and its predecessor "The Winds of War") was composed by Robert Cobert, who did the music for TV's "Dark Shadows" in the 1960s and 1970s.
This tv theme holds the accolade for the longest ever opening credits for a television series...and excellent music it is too...a near exact version of Winds of War !
Big crazy war where the axis and the Soviets all had real F.U. leaders all at the same time.

The cost of avoiding this war would have been the domination of Europe by the Nazi Party and Asia by Imperial Japan.
