well it all depends on where you ride

i have a can am ds450x and it handles like a dirt bike its fast as hell and smooth on the jumps, it is a perfect bike for hitting the trails, and also jumping, but in a dirt bike you can go places a quad can fit through so there are many things to think about,

@LegoMatt13 depends what your doing... if your jumping/driving up windy roads up a mountain go for a dirtdike.. anything else you can do with a quad.. oh and if your on a windy track quads tend to flip easier than a dirtbike.. your choise though! :D

@LegoMatt13 dirt bike are more nimbol and you can get onto thinner trails and wut not. its cool doing wheelies on them cuase it takes lots of practice first of all u gotta learn how to keep the front end up and second u cant tip over, thats what makes it fun cuz its a challenge. dirt bikes also are much faster cuz you dont have to carry around all that extra weight including 2 more tires and the frame wich makes a bike faster----i will continue this onto another comment

@LegoMatt13 also, on a fourwheeler even tho wheelies are a little easyer cuz u just gotta keep the front end up, u dont gotta worry bout tiping over side ways. but if u wanna hit jumps and stuff, i'd suggest to get a bike cuz if u make one mistake on a quad while in the air and u dont land perfactly it may cause you to flip and get hurt rlly bad, trust me i had a quad and i've done it, it sucks thats why i ride bikes now. if your a begginer i'd suggest a ttr 125 or a yz125 hope this helped =)

What do you want out of life? I ride desert trail, and often go where most quads don't go ( till they see our single track) . If you can experience both befor you buy.
