That simply has to do with the fact that nowadays youngsters (who mostly watch these shows) don't know who Shirley Bassey is. Nevertheless, calling this version a piece of crap underlines the fact that you dont recognise a good performance done by a starting singer. Its not perfect but very good, considering the fact she sung this for someone special (deceased person I believe). Basseys is better, but that doesnt mean this version isn't good.
@sas9023055 this is a good idea. i noticed that streisand's version of people had a link to bassey's version and it seems to have dramatically increased the views. if i could make a suggestion, i would add the maybe this time medley at the end of the second audience with to versions of maybe by minnelli etc.

well if you think that's boring...the song is being judged at the end, and obviously it is in Dutch so you can't understand, but the thing is, she was singing this for and with the memory of her old music teacher, who had passed away and meant a lot to her, she is singing this with so much compassion and emotion, it gives me chills everytime! The judges were blown away by it!
This song means so much being from Europe, it symbolizes hope, peace, and the faith to never stop following your heart. I perish the thought of what my own life would not have been like had Allied forces liberated Europe. Myself and many many others would be in very different circumstances right now.
Nikki did an amazing job with this song, very heartfelt and true. Being a German makes it hard to say a Dutchman does it better...but she nailed it!

@SugarTomAppleRoger i know! she had a uk no1 with it in '61. bassey has such a great voice that when she does an original version of a song, she sets the standard by which other versions will be judged and, when she covers a song, she very often improves on the original. eg her cover of 'something' outsold the beatles version- the only artist to achieve this.

I heard a lot of sharps even on her 2nd line. Excusable but a trained ear would hear them. I noticed her voice is very tired here. She might have performed better if she has had about a 2-week vocal rest. Fabulous but nor perfect, I say. And the melodrama was very unnecessary.

Gelukkig mag ieder zijn eigen mening hebben, want god wat ben ik het totaal niet met jou eens. Nikki heeft dit zó enorm perfect gezongen. Kippevel en tranen in m'n ogen, telkens weer. En als jouw moeder dit beter zong dan zij heeft gedaan, dan mag je in je handjes knijpen. En had ze een gouden keeltje.
I believe anyone who can sing and can sing this song, it does not matter who it is singing it---when one is down, it sure helps to pick up the spirit.
The free spirit of the song is perfectly exposed by the way Nikki sings it. I like it even better than the well known film version and I made the effort to listen to all the rest of the singers mentioned in the comments below and I'm pretty sure I like this one the best. Some of the others have too much "decorations" but here they are very well balanced. To say that it is out of tune is just the same as to say that "gruppeto" or "vibrato" is out of tune ;-)

She's ok, but certainly not outsanding. Not a patch on the song in the film. Indeed my late mother could sing better than this lady does.

The free spirit of the song is perfectly exposed by the way Nikki sings it. I like it even better than the well known film version and I made the effort to listen to all the rest of the singers mentioned in the comments below and I'm pretty sure I like this one the best. Some of the others have too much "decorations" but here they are very well balanced. To say that it is out of tune is just the same as to say that "gruppeto" or "vibrato" is out of tune ;-)

WTF? was half decent... Could've been much much better though! Was wayyyyy of key in some parts, too many notes not right during that song, plus it sounds like she fucked it up half way through..... Watch Guy Sebastian to see the best performance of this song!!!!!!!!

@HVNOR Who cares if it's not always on key as long as the emotions come across! In that she certainly succeeded as far as I'm concerned, especially since she sang it for her former singing coach who died. Even more surprising she could sing at all... But she can definitely sing. Check her other vids on YT, especially Bring me Down!

NO NO NO NO......... NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't agree! What planet are you living on? Get your ears checked out! You must be deaf to even say she came near to success...... I ears hurt during that! I felt like rolling up into a little ball and dieing! It was horrible! She needs work! Allot of it!!!!!!! After some training and 5 or 6 beers shes might sound better lol.
