  • I still think this is very impressive!

  • i'm guessing it was a comedy cos that was hilarious!!

  • @locojambo funny as fuck!

  • @locojambo Facepalm at your comment.......

  • full version???

  • ohhh welll it had to be one of the thrilling movies of dat era!!!

  • ehehehehe this made me giggle

  • They need to do a new film and hav Hugh Jackman as Jekyll/Hyde tht wuld b sick

  • I was actually impressed by how well they did the transformation..

  • I think this transformation is much better off that the one was made in year 1931.

  • @bothloveme With all due respect, I prefer the 1931 version since it's far more complex in that it combined screen dissolves and pre-applied makeup revealed by changed color filtering/lighting. This 1912 version is clever for its time, but IMO it's too quick and clean; it doesn't depict the conflict between good and evil for me. It's still innovative, though, but we can't do transformations like this sans CGI anymore because they would look horrible in digital colored film *sigh.

  • I think the mr hdyes chahcer reminds me of the inter evil in all of us.I think i might have little bit of mr hydes in me also.

  • It's pretty creepy to me. So neat to see how far filming has come. Thanks for posting it!

  • I wonder if any of these old films had any errors in where you can see a crew member in the background, a piece of equipment, etc. It would be nice to see old film bloopers.

  • haha this is cute

  • I havent seen it in a long time, I'll have to re watch it, but my guess is that it could be inspired by the Frederic March version (1932, sound) or John Barrymore's (1920, silent).

  • 0:44 NO!!!!!! DON'T DRINK IT!!

  • For all you negative jerks this movie was made the same time of the Titanic that alone makes this version amazing! great effects , one of films first.

  • that's me on a saturday night...

    damn alcohol...

  • Why was I not told this movie (or scenes from it) still exist??? I thought the earliest surviving version was 1915...

  • is this what u call a horror film back then when it was first released becuz i saw this on a list of scariest horror movies?

  • @randomlyawesome10 Maybe cause the story of it is fit enough to be 'one of the scariest horror movies'~

Come on, you can't be so dumb that you don't realise that this was made 98 years ago, I mean sure, there was theater, but theater, well, psh..

Why am I explaining it to you.. You'll never know better

And I have things to do other than trying to make sense to the heads of a youtuber..

You know how ignorant those youtubers can be nowadays.

    See you!

  • @LaoMinga Relax, mate. It was a legitimate question. If you haven't seen the film or read the book, how are you supposed to know, from just this clip, that it's a horror movie? :)

  • @kharwaii because it's a silent film

  • looks he's drunk

  • how come i can't hear any sound?????

  • c bien dé fois les film dépoque!

  • The quality of this would have actually been much better on the screen in 1912.

The jumpy frames, the washed out picture, and most of the other artifacts and blemishes on the film are a result of an aged copy.

Just to think that we're looking back in time almost 100 frigin years here! :)

  • Hyde looks like Keith Moon

  • Comment removed

  • I love this :D

  • The early test runs for Grecian Formula had some pronounced side effects!

    Worked fast though!

  • that was a fast change. LOL XD

  • looks so real!

  • Two phrases for this: THIS IS A TRUE ACTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS WHAT IS AN ACTOR AND A PASSIONATING MOVIE!!! THE DEVIL TAKE ALL THE SUPERFLUOUS THINGS WHICH ARE ABUNDANT IN SERIES AND MOVIES FROM NOWADAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ohh! It's very well man! ;D

    Good video!

by: Marc1XD (Comes to my channel please)

  • well this Mr.Hyde looks great =)

  • Great acting!

  • Dr Jekyll: inventor of methamphetamine.

  • HISTORIC BEAUTY!!

  • Yes, it's very hard for this generation to appreciate what it took to make a film like this. The reality is that you could created a far better image with an iPhone. Last year I would say you need a lap top to do the editing but no more, you can do it right on the phone. Here is my change, read the story, and do your own video based on the book not the film. Let see what you can all come up with.

  • @vidyman "The reality is that you could created a far better image with an iPhone."

Uh, no.. More clear = not neccesarily "better"

    ;P

  • if you take your time and light it right. but that's what missing.

it so easy to make an image, that no one is bothering to learn the basics, like lighting and compositing.

  • @vidyman or just plain creativity

I find a lot is about lighting and composition

    without any fundament

    :)

  • lol, i'm readin this book for english ^.^

    pretty god so far

  • why are there so many different versions of this movie I mean come on 1912 1920 1932 what next?

  • Cultural indicator? Hint at what people of that time period were concerning themselves with in human nature and science? Even now it's a perennial favorite, though we have replaced the good doctor with sentient robots and stories of mind control. What is the self? What is core identity? Can anyone be wholly good or bad? Good stuff worthy of various re-tellings.

  • He looks retarded.

  • i thought Dr.jekylle woukd looks different when i pictured it

  • *sigh* Whatever happened to appreciation? This movie was made almost ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, and all people can comment on is how low-grade the transformation was. News flash: computers and televisions and special effects haven't always existed. The acting isn't bad; that was the style of the time, and considering the fact that the movies were all silent until the late '20s, the acting had to be over-exaggerated. Sheesh.

  • @katieeeeehope

In addition to what you said, typically film was shot and projected of half-the speed of today, so when you project them today at modern speeds they're movements only appears to be too fast and exaggerated.

But there were still some left over movements from the stage and melodramas that may seem odd to us today.

  • @katieeeeehope Of course you are correct, but what can we say? To some people we're casting pearls at swine, they've never experienced the simple pleasures.

  • @katieeeeehope I happen to concur.

  • I happen to concur.

  • @katieeeeehope agree, if they lived back then they would be scared like shit.

  • @katieeeeehope The special effects are one of the things I love MOST about old movies. :-)

  • yeah that transformation was very sutle!

  • Nice Jump cu- err- Transformation.

  • does anyone know how much of this film exist,is this the only part of the film that exists?

  • ezkisofrennniiiaa xD

  • this movie only goes for 12 mins

  • it´s sooooooo looow

  • Edward Hyde face is not like that....

  • jaaaaaa.... jaaaaaaaaaaa...

  • Also I noticed that the editing improved after the 1920s, since they decided rerecording the film on a fresh Roll instead of using the one that was cut up for editing.

  • Yeah believe it or not but sound was like a new thing back then. In fact ten years after they came out with sound, They invented Color!!! Of course old films that are transformed into color like from 1940 and below intend to be color corrected for re-releases.

  • People actually thought films before the 1920's had sound? On this site? Seriously?

  • They'd been experimenting with sound since te dawn of film, but nothing ever came to fruition until 1927.

  • Yes. The first "Talkie" was called "The Jazz Singer" in 1927.

  • @DrinkWater22 For my part, sounds is not indispensable!:) This is just delicious! Perhaps the sound would have altered this acting ! We nowadays have more than a sound and a cursed world full of obscenities and evils! I frankly feel my heart belongs to those years for ever, at least for movies, the quality of woman's education and that of children, enjoying life and way of living ! Excellent weekend to you !:) Durandal87

  • i watched this the other day on tv land it was actually pretty good

  • yeah all movies before the twenties were soundless, and only had backround music like this. sometimes they had like not subtitles, but a seperate slide that would come after with words on it. if you're interested you should watch "Signin' in the Rain"

  • i won a contest of the book I read with this book

  • reminds me of looney tunes

  • No Offence But The Music Could Be Better...:S

  • my class is reading the book... i DO NOT understand it

  • Did films have music like this in 1912 or was that added later?

  • It was added later. All films in that era were totally soundless.

  • Films were accompanied live - piano, organ, orchestra, etc. -

during the "silent era". Some films were paired with records in attempt for synchronized sound as early as 1895, with many similar ideas marketed into the '20s. Vitaphone made a hit in 1926 with its synchronized discs and amplified sound. Lee DeForest invented the sound on film system we have back in the teens tho.

  • What's amazing is the number of ignoramuses on this site. Pretty pathetic.

  • @gdw1910 so like you¡ fool

  • @gdw1910 Yep.

  • @gdw1910 its youtube. not a university

  • @LoveNoteProjects Yes, unfortunately it means catering to idiots.

  • @gdw1910 do you happen to know the version of jekyll and hyde that is referenced during the transformation scene of the queen in snow white and the seven dwarfs?

  • cool

  • Happy belated 158th birthday Robert Louis Stevenson!

  • wow that looks like me early morning before coffee...

  • Just like me when i drink a bottle of codeine cough syrup. :D

  • nice special effects :-P

  • hahahah this nigga. dat shit is funny man. lol

  • I don't care how old it is, I love Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! Also, I love old black and white movies so life's good :)

  • Yeah I realy liked the short story when I read it for the first time.

  • classic

  • dang for being so old it's scary still...

  • whats dr. jekyll and mr. hyde 1953 like?

  • wtf there's dr jekkyl and mr hyde from 1912 from 1920 from 1932 and from 1953

  • The movies-- especially this one-- and the 1886 novel they're based upon are awesome! My advice: STAY away from the INFAMOUS NES game! It is, in my opinion, the worst game ever made!

  • how the heck did u get this?! this is almost 100 years old!

  • LOL

i have some ned kelly footage filmed in 1889 something like that..

    check it out

    XD

  • I used to check the 8mm film of this out of the public library when I was a kid. Fun to see it again but wish I could see the whole film.

  • Dang How CREEPY :/ Personally, I Think Silent Films Are A Bit Scarier Than Ones With Sound

  • i agree its more dramatic

  • Have you ever seen a japanese horror film?

  • dis was in da days of da silent films, wasn't it?

  • hey looks like a good movie please can you host whole movie

  • this is fantasticus

  • is this available on DVD?

  • borsteuh, hij krijgt borsteuh!!!!! lol

  • It would've been so scary if he had looked in the camera, close..

  • Wow. Discreet transformation.

  • was this a silent movie?

  • no they had voices perfected on the movies in 1912.

  • it was made in 1912. what do u think?

    PS no offence

  • And that, my friends, is why you should never drink White Lightning!

    ;)

    Great clip!

  • kooooooool =]

  • does this movie still excist? wow, i wish somone could find Der Januskopf.

  • that's the murnau film with lugosi?

  • Yeah thats right, Lugosi played Poole the butler, and the immortal Conrad Veidt played Jekyll/Hyde.

  • No, you´re wrong! The Murnau version, called "Der Januskopf", is lost forever!

  • Dont be so sure, thats what we thought about the 1910 frankenstein, and it was found wasn't it?

  • OK, you may be right... But this is definitive not the Veidt-Movie. Jekyll/Hyde was played by James Cruze, a Mormon. I wish they would find the Murnau-version !!!

  • I know this is not the Murnau version, and it will be found one day.

  • I hope, you´ll be right !!!!

  • Really? That's great! Now if only they could find London After Midnight (NOT the band).

Interesting footnote about Jekyll and Hyde: Hyde was actually smaller than a regular human, almost like a large monkey or a 12 year old kid. I guess people weren't impressed by a small killer.

  • Thats true, in the book he is described to be dwarfish, and his face was "like that of a caveman". In most versions Hyde is bigger than Jekyll, and i find that good in a way, a good example of how much stronger Hyde is compared to Jekyll, both physically and mentally.

  • Have you read the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Mr. Hyde is a member and they mention the fact that he's grown larger than Dr. Jekyll. They hint it's his animal nature growing stronger.

  • He is a big ape in The League of extraodrinary gentlemen hehe ;D But thats an interesting twist to the character. Spencer Tracys Hyde was not a monkey like Fredrich March but a diabolical man, he was all that is fould in a human being, and thats what made him my favorite.

  • in the novel hyde is shorter than jekyll

  • I really hope they find London After Midnight

  • yes, it is very unfortuneate that we will never get to see that film, F.W. Murnau was a genius, his Nosferatu film is fantastic

  • Wow. The only Jekyll and Hyde silent film I've seen is the John Barrymore version. This is great.

  • is this a silent film? I like it. I like how they show what he loooks like as hyde. I like making my own dialogue.

  • Why, me too ! I really find not very necessary that actors have to talk ! They should concentrate more on their acting, meditate about how making it as Perfect as that of ancient actors of ancient times!

Thank you for your comment and opinion about the absence of dialogues in ancient pictures! Durandal87

  • @durandal87 Ancient ? That sounds like 1200 years ago
