i vthink the intro to desert moon was deleted when his chrachter says to another gut kiss me, it was a joke seeing it again you know it is, like guys b.s in the locker room but given the homophobia that was going on then, you can see why the intro was removed unjustly so then. the songs about past glories and friendship, how anyone can misinterpet it is beyond me
just enjoy the song it's very sweet richly felt too.
No, I'm positive it's not. This video was produced in 1984. The "kid brother" in this video looks to be, what, late teens - early twenties at the least. This would mean the person in the video would be in thier 40's by now. I believe his son Matthew maybe only in his late 20's or early 30's!!
he should have said 'kiss my a**' at the beginning of the song, but back in the 80's we had too much censorship, and you sure couldn't get away with that back then
Unfortunately, Styx and Dennis have suffered the fate of other groups who have gone their own way. After the split, neither really had a lot of commercial success. Dennis lacked the name recognition, Styx lacked the talent. But this song is absolutely one of my favorites. And yes, the 80s were the prime time for music!
The 80's were a very "inclusive" time for music. You had the blue collar rock from the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, then you had acts like Prince, Tears for Fears, The Romantics,The Police or whatever. I loved the 80's. you didn't have to be under 18 to have a hit record.
What the hell do you know! Dennis is the best singer ever! The voice of an angel. His music has gotten me through some of the most emotionally hard times of my life! He is STYX!
I've loved this song since it came out, & this is the 1st time I've seen the vid since probably early 1985. I was quite surprised at how much of the vid came back to me upon viewing, which I had mostly forgotten. I've always firmly believed that this song was one of Dennis's best efforts.
I havent heard this song since 1984, took me a nerve or two to finaly click the play button. Rembering me to the 80z ` that rainy day i had a love stold from me, Then walking home in the rain, Come the night...the moon&stars was the only friend i had... perhapes I will push the replay button and appreciate the losses and gains from My 80z [[[PeaceDudes]]]
Hah who wouldn't? Maybe remember which stocks to buy or not to be a jerk to 'that special girl' or spend more time with your family...time sure flies, doesn't it?
Boy, that mortality bug has a big bite. Remember this period- young, hanging, not a care in the world- drinking on the beach, looking at the stars, really feeling life and the invincebility we had. Had the world by the balls, we did.
I hate the people who say stuff like "Dennis sucks" any such, Guys, im 14, but, i love oldies, my 5 favorites are, Styx, Dennis Deyoung, Coltrane(I love jazz), America, and Credence Clearwater Revival.
For only being 14, you are a wise kid. The late 70's and early 80's were the greatest time period for great music. Make no mistake about it. I lived through that time period going to high school and college and no time period since has so much good music been produced. That is a fact!

This video is a fascinating study of Dennis DeYoung's homosexuality. Particularly the male bonding football arm wrestling montage. The classic 'beard' shows up in the form of his ex-girlfriend, the "kiss me" line in the opening, the melancholy ending, the entire nostalgic overview ( a popular theme in the 80's- Boys Of Summer, Summer Of 69, Cherry Bomb, My Hometown, Roll Me Away, etc)-which may not be "gay" per se, but does add weight to the theme. Brilliant!
Roger Waters was lead singer on Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut. David Gilmour did majority of vocals in Pink Floyd, even Rick Wright and Syd Barrett did. Styx without Dennis DeYoung is like Genesis without Phil Collins and/or Peter Gabriel, Queen without Freddie Mercury, Led Zeppelin without John Bonham, Bad Company without Paul Rodgers and/or Mick Ralphs.
Floyd is my all time favorite, so don't misunderstand. I saw them in T.O. without Waters and it was the best concert of all time IMO. I was merely commenting. I thank you for expanding the list. I basically lost interest ,in each of the acts you mentioned, after the significant loss of said member. Just wasn't the same. I think had Rick Allen actually gave up(no one could have blamed him) I may have stopped listening to Leppard. Classic Rock all the way. Comfortably Numb in Ontario
Desert Moon was my prom theme and reminds me of a girl from my past that I left slip away because my dad had moved us. Why on earth would this song need modified? It is still as classic today as it was then.
I hope you weren't intending the "by Styx" part to modify all 3 songs. Because this was a solo project by DeYoung, and More Than a Feeling is by Boston.

A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand;sorry i didnt want that happening to me
Hey! My brother and sister went to this concert when I was too young. I'll never forget when they brought me a shirt and woke me up at 2 am to give it to me. I was 11 yrs old. Still one of our favs. I hope someday my brother gives me his 67convertible mustang my parents sold to him. Great video of the good old days!!!
Please don't EVER delete this video! I remember watching this as a kid and for years I couldn't find it anywhere.. Now I finally get to watch this again, and watch it at least once a week! I love it!!!
i feel the same way man. everytime i comeback home this is one of the first things i do. i'm sure my wife thinks it's pathetic but this just one of many silly hangups of mine don't know what it is probably never will
This song and video brings me back to when I was 8 in late 1984 and back to my childhood back in my native Whitman, MA. I wore the 45 out so I got the album a few days later. This was from when MTV was MUSIC TELEVISION! The words to this ring true and when you go back to places you grew up at an older age, alot changes. After I returned to Mass in 2005 (after I returned there for summer 2004 when I moved to South Crapolina in 2003), everything changed so I moved to Florida in 2006.
I was 9 years old when this song came out, and me and my sister loved this song! It was around the time I started listening to Casey Kasem's AT40. I remember hearing it on the radio all the time. You're right--MTV was Music Television back then, and sadly, not even VH1 Classic of today can bring back those special memories of late 1984. I was living in Queens, NY at the time and was about to move to the suburbs of Glen Rock, NJ. It's sad to think I can't get 1984 back again... :-(
musicray agree---this is a great song and vh1 and mtv are now both poor. I see martha quinn floating around now and than----however, sadly JJ Jackson passed away awhile ago. Mtv was fun to watch in those early days----not any longer.
Being 40 now, it definitely makes you think about your past, and who you were back in the mid-1980's. Yeah, I still miss you, Tammy, but my boy who have never existed. I know that's somewhat of a cop-out, but everyone needs to justify things they do in life
You can keep your memories but it's harder to go back and reminisce with old friends because alot of them leave/die/move on...Great song and cool video in my opinion after all these years-Mikey
Great Song And Great Video...old time MTV days..MTV and VH1 both suck today...nothing but garbage videos...where are you Martha Quinn, J.J. Jackson and the rest from the MTV pioneer days???..thanks for the post !!
Don't be scared to tell us how you really feel, I guess i am not going to lose any sleep about The idea that this isnt filmed in Chicago, all i know is i seen him put on a 2 hour show at the Minnesota state fair and it was a fun 2 hours.

I can't believe you're all praising this worthless steaming pile of cat turds. It took every fiber of my being not to PUKE. This song/video is as SHITTY as I remember.
There are some mountains in the background this cant be filmed in Illinois. Being from the midwest Dennis DeYoung and Styx were one of the great groups of our era. They were especially huge in the Illinois, Wisconsin, and midwest areas. The Chicago area was loaded with great bands in the 70s---styx, buckinghams, new colony six---shadows of knight.---truly a great era for music---Dennis you were and still are great.
god, they just don't make tracks like this anymore. intelligently written, sung with passion and one that brings back a flood of memories of simpler times...
It could be Mokena, Illinois (SW sub of Chicago). He was living there at the time (Hence the song, "Southbound Ryan" off of his "Back to the Word" release). Though, I've heard he has since moved to Burr Ridge.
you don't how and what I would give to go back and kick my own ass...what a fool I was, just a fool and here I thought I was a Somebody. son of a bitch! I never believed it would happen to me and it did...slipped away so easily and fast.
hell, I would have left me, too.
Lisa, wherever you are...and you guys...son of a bitch, it was somethin', wasn't it.
you are somebody man just not who you thought you were maybe better maybe worse but the fact you can look back and learn from it tells me you cant be all bad
another song to show us how youth is wasted on the young.i really wish that i could go back and kick my own ass sometimes. cheesy video but the song does hit the mark
The song and the video make me so sad.

God, I miss those days.

musicray agree---this is a great song and vh1 and mtv are now both poor.

I know that's somewhat of a cop-out, but everyone needs to justify things they do in life
danastev924 3 years ago
You can keep your memories but it's harder to go back and reminisce with old friends because alot of them leave/die/move on...Great song and cool video in my opinion after all these years-Mikey

Funny, the only reason I even looked it up was because I found it it was filmed in my hometown. :P

What town is this the train station looks familiar?
lizzard71 3 years ago
It could be Mokena, Illinois (SW sub of Chicago). He was living there at the time (Hence the song, "Southbound Ryan" off of his "Back to the Word" release). Though, I've heard he has since moved to Burr Ridge.
RJosephReece 3 years ago
No, actually its a little town in California called Santa Paula. :)
oscar8563 3 years ago
You are right it was filmed in Santa Paula,Calif about 70 miles east of LA in Ventura County. My uncle worked on the shoot and said it was fun...
