I've actually not done these sitting down. I do a variation while seating for pinch grip and phonebook tearing, though. You pinch a big heavy plate with the thumb pads and fingers, put your elbows out just above your knees, and curl it up and down between your legs, if that makes sense. It's what Dennis Rogers recommends.
