I use a couple of scales (harmonic minor, minor, phrygian dominant, diminished) and steal a lot of brutal death metal rhythms, especially from Suffocation (lol jk). Generally I don't really follow rules though, I like to experiment a lot. When making riffs, I put together what sounds good.

Yeah, I still have to fix the pinch harmonics in the GP file. I originally wrote the song in C# standard, and I changed all the guitars to E Standard tuning on Guitar Pro so I could play along. And the pinch harmonics aren't meant to be bent, I use vibrato on them. :)
