We were out of power for 15 days. That night was one of the scariest nights of my life. On average every 10 seconds or so a tree or large branch would fall. We all slept in our basement by our wood stove waiting for one of the massive oak or hickory trees to fall on our house, I remember thinking it was like being in London during WWII. Everytime a tree would fall near us the ground would shake. Luckily our house sustained minor damage.

That was horrible. Hotels were price gouging and it was insane, we toughed it out and I can't say I've ever been so thankful to have power in my life.

Next the local overhead lines for the rest of town went out from a whole tree then about 9pm the transmission lines next to us and substation went dead thanks to a weak lightning arrestor wire snapping and dropping onto the long distance lines. We had considerably more ice than you show. As for those people that think this is nothing remember this area is hilly, heavily wooded & not used to this
Ice is a SOB especially here with the hills and woods and electric companies dont brace as much here as this is not normal. I grew up in Chicago and been stationed in central IL, Wichita KS, Plattsburgh NY and Iceland and seen much worse ice than this but those places are ready for ice as it's normal. Iceland the lines are mostly underground. Just one of those things nature throws at us. We had no power for 9 days so we just went to the way things were done in the 1870's.

crap it looks like it looked here a couple months back! the birch tree in my back yard is still snapped and bent so the top is now touching the ground!

We get colder weather than this, and sometimes more snow, but fortunately our snow is dry and powdery and just takes a bit of effort to remove.
Always thankful that I don't have icestorms to deal with.

i drove from greensboro nc to chicago for christmas of 2004 and saw similar destruction in central ohio....nature can really kick ass sometimes!!

Now this am it is snowing again and Monday they say another big snow headed this way. Lots of power off and shelters open for folks.
