I remember a time, when only swimmers were permitted to enter the water at the "Wedge" (or at least I thought so) and surfboarders were banned, because of the proximity of the rocks next to the dangerous surf. And for the fact that the waves break so close to the shore. There were no body boarders back then. I believe this rule is no longer enforced, since tonight I have seen videos of surfboarding at the Wedge. Obviously, I have been away for sometime. The last time I was fishing in the surf.

The waves at the Wedge, break right on the beach. Most waves break out in the deeper water, but when you crash at the wedge, you immediately get ground into the sand! The waves are usually not so big. They get huge when there are storms coming up from Baja California (Mexico). Perhaps other storms cause the waves to be huge, even when there is no evidence of a storm nearby.

I was at a beachhouse there when I was 15 and I went in the Wedge the day before the swell hit and the waves were already starting to mack at least overhead...scariest shit ever. like being in a washing machine. Thought i wasnt gonna be able to make it out so I swam out and to the right past the break and then came out. I was frickin exhausted. Dont underestimate the Wedge!

I have lived in Newport beach surfed all my life and all it takes is one wipe out and you can be done forever......this wave nreaks in very shallow water. I have seen people go out and get sucked out into the ocean when its big. There is such a strong current that it sucks you right out past the break right past the jetty. Some serious shit...... I have seen people drown in these waters

It was once no fiberglass surfboards, like when it's "blackballed" regarding too many people swimming at shoreline. It's justified because it's a lot of risk compared to other locations. But since year 2000 we don't worry about risk anymore of any kind. It's just awesome seeing kids take bigger risks than I ever would have when I was young. Don't poop yourself, skateboard/snowboard half-pipe theory proves that it's very safe with the most vertical action possible. It's what they should be doing.

its a challenge to any big wave surfer. theres no spot like it in the world that im aware of. that being said...when it is at its baddest it is the most violent dangerous beuatiful irresistable break i have ever surfed. in 98 i was almost killed there. tht last ride was THE REASON everyone surfs there.opportunities like that are what make the wedge so great. teahupoo at Fiji is kind like that in that if u screw up u will pay.but if u dont it justifies ur search.

I almost did drown that year but it wasthe day after this when the wind picked up it was cool at first but when it started blowing it was making like 6 to 8 ft faced chops w is like imp. to paddle in, but basically you need a lot of exp and the key to not drowning is to COMPLETLY RELAX when it hits you because you can't fight it its too powerfull so you waste your energy if you do. It will sometimes knock the wind out of you total relaxation helps you stay concious under water.
