Hi maangchi, i was wondering if the ginger is necessary to add into the maejakgwa because i want to make maejakgwa for my friend bt she have an allergy to ginger so is its necessary to add ginger to the maejakgwa?
Oh Wow! I made a recipe for a dessert called "Koeksisters" recently. My school was doing a south african themed menu and the recipe for these cookies and the koeksisters are almost exact. Even the sugar syrup with cinnamon! That's crazy how two different countries have the same treat!
I've been waiting for so long for someone to show me how to make this. I'm going to make this for my parents when they come back from malaysia. many thanks
Maangchi!! i need your help...i made my cookies today but it got puffy and when i added the syrup the cookies got soggy...how do u makes ur cookies look nice and yellow and crispy like that??? does using corn oil effect it's crispiness?? and i even put really thin slices to see if it was the problem but even the thin slices puffed up....
omg. omg. omg. i have these on my ipod. and i get SOOOO hungry!! when you eat at the end, you make it seem 20000x as much yummy as it already is!!! and most your food is really healthy and low fat from what iv'e seen
It is alot of work...but well worth it! It's a hit at parties (its sorta like that slogan, "you can't eat just one" kinda dessert hehe).
Filipinos have a similar recipe also (in my family its known as "cascaron"). Everything is almost the same except for the "ribbon"shaping. Instead of the precise rectangle shape, my mom just goes with a diamond shape w/ one slit then fold...then just a plain sugar syrup. Will try adding cinnamon/pinenut and adding ginger juice to the dough next time.
we have the same cookies in north africa it's called Griwech or Chabakia" but without ginger we put butter and 1 egg and if we want we add sesame seed , all the other steps are the same, in Algeria we have an other design more difficult the shape may have till 10 parts if you want watch this video :
You are so cute! (I hope thats not rude, but you have the cutest hands!) And your recipe looks like you put a lot of effort into it. I love ginger! I will certainly try this sometime!
Dear Maangchi, I don't think that this is authentically Korean because I see a lot of Chinese and Vietnamese people make this as well with almost exactly the same recipe. I went to China and I found a stall that prepared this. Also on my visit to Vietnam I saw the exact same thing too. Maybe I am wrong, but I think that just like the egg roll many Asian cultures have their way of making things such as this cookie. =)
