As for global warming, I don't think it should be belief-based. It's a scientific issue and we can get to the bottom of it. And I'm totally open to skeptical arguments, but whenever I research them myself, they turn out to be bogus and only re-enforce global warming's existence. I argue because I can't simply let people believe it's a hoax, it's too important.
Many on the left are not engaging environmental issues correctly, you're right. And many others are only making half-assed efforts on it. However, there are also many on the left (in gov't) who know the issues and want to take SERIOUS action/solutions on them. Taxing carbon emissions is by far not the only solution proposed, it's the solution MOST focused on by the right-wing in order to discredit any action on things. Also, keep in mind, carbon taxes will not be that evil at all.
We actually have it quite lucky in America on the price of petrol. In many other countries, they have to pay much more for their fuel, and a carbon tax actually encourages (not solves) and pushes us towards solutions faster. It's not perfect or always pretty, but we must MAKE our government have industry share most of the burden rather than the citizenry. The price we pay for fuel doesn't reflect the long-term/holistic costs either.
Well even there, America is a HUGE country. Places like Germany and italy and England aren't all that big. There is a need for less cars and less travel there. Most families over there have one car per house hold, so to make up for lost revenue that would have come with a bigger population and more demand for travel, they jack up the prices.

I agree, we need radical solutions. This includes pushing for rapid changes in renewable technology (which NOBODY can argue with). But it will also require many of us to CHANGE HOW WE LIVE. We must localize, become more sustainable, free, autonomous, and be able to live in tight-knit communities not SO tied into large centralized governments OR economies. But so long as governments exist, they can and MUST be used for good. We must take the power back from special interests.
You're correct, the rich will usually gain off our society and the labors of the underclass. But that has nothing to do with global warming or a carbon tax and everything to do with our civilization. Every since nation-states came about 10 thousand years ago, you've had a rich/powerful upper class lording over the much less rich/powerful underclass. However, there are also many on the left (in gov't) who know the issues and want to take SERIOUS action/solutions on them. Taxing carbon emissions is by far not the only solution proposed, it's the solution MOST focused on by the right-wing in order to discredit any action on things. Also, keep in mind, carbon taxes will not be that evil at all.

In many other countries, they have to pay much more for their fuel, and a carbon tax actually encourages (not solves) and pushes us towards solutions faster. It's not perfect or always pretty, but we must MAKE our government have industry share most of the burden rather than the citizenry. The price we pay for fuel doesn't reflect the long-term/holistic costs either.
