Balls of steel for sure. Mansell is one of the greatest ever. I was a little child when watched 1990 Mexico GP live and I became a Ferrari fan owing by this tremendous Mansell's performance.
This is what F1 is all about. THAT pass, round the outside on the marbles, with knackered tyres on a notoriously dangerous high speed parabolic curve... Amazing. This is why the tifosi called him Il Leone.... I've never seen anything so exhilarating before or since then. Poor ol' Murray was nearly wetting himself and I have to admit, it makes me misty eyed every time I watch it. Marvellous.
i remember this and have it on vhs, along with the commentry of the late great james hunt it will be one of my great memorys of F1 'and hes fairly rocketing away' fantastic posting. thanks
One of the reasons I like your videos, Milord F1 Educator , is the value addition by way of your snippets. I don't pretend to possess your expertise, so keep the videos coming.
Strangely, I find the Eighties races most interesting of all. Somehow cars nowadays seem to resemble the X - fighters from Star Wars, complete with Darth Vader - like drivers and Storm Trooper - like mechanics.
I was a HUGE Berger fan but my 2nd favourite driver was Mansell! Fantastic battle and Berger was in my opinion one of the best defenders of position which makes Mansells move even more amazing!
I remember this race like it was yesterday. Senna and Prost were my favorite drivers, but this race made me a life long Mansell fan as well. One of the greatest races I've ever seen and that pass in the 'peralltata' was beyond belief, this was as good as Villeneuve and Arnoux a decade earlier.
Funny you should write "balls of steel". I once read that Berger grabbed Mansell in the groin at the parc fermé. A startled Mansell asked for what on earth Berger did that. "I wanted to know what balls of steel felt like".
Is this an urban legend, or is there any truth to that story?
Thanks for posting this with context, Mr. F1Educator! :-) One of the all time great GPs from start to finish, and I was lucky to see it on the day (though on TV, not at the track).
@leone7227 I was watching it on tv too, one of the best GPs from start to finish as you said. What made Prost and Mansells drive even more special was the fact they started from about 15th? 16? on the grid. Golden age of F1 for me as a fan.
