What's with the back to the audience thing as well as the sound of screeching tyres for the high notes - seems really weird to me that he is one of the tenors at the top of the world these days - maybe something should be said for his musical abilities - like Domingo a decent singer but great musically...maybe the major houses prefer that...no stuff ups when it comes to singers that can't read a score...lol!!!
He looks like a gorilla. He moves around the stage and doesn't sing to his audience. It is a disappointment that the Prince of Tenors should be given such a tribute.
you are all rightm but maybe it worth to remember that this concert is form 1998 and that the guy was just growing. As all the great tenors you mentioned here, to begin with beloved Corelli, who was not as good when he was 36 (Cura`s age here) than when he turned older. Less hate and more objectivity. Peace and love
Whatever you think of his voice, there is no lyricism to the singing. The phrases are not legato and the scooping doesnt make it any better. I saw his Met debut and he didnt sing any high notes.
I'm not a Corelli fan, and as you may have guessed...I'm not particularly fond of Cura either. Giacomini was good in his early years, when he sang and didn't shout. I've always liked Pavarotti
corelli fans are a precious bunch.....if it isnt cura getting slated its pavarotti...........imo corelli wasnt anywhere near as great as some think....couldnt sing dramatic roles....he always sounded like a heavy lyrical tenor....not pavarotti nor a giacomini......
the main problem with Cura is not just the lack of technique...the main problem is the lack of GOOD-TASTE and GOOD-PHRASING...the result is that whatever he sings ,it looks like a pop-rock-singer
what's the pleasure in wathing a tenor who's constantly turning back to the audience while hitting higher notes? This guy is afraid of himself and at the same time considers himself to be the latest Caruso. This performance is an insult to the audience and Corelli himself.Somebody must've been mad to let this self confident and conceited clown sing this aria there.
Really Bad!!! What a wasted talent!!! Great voice but no technique and most of all no Brains!!! The Guy thinks he is a God among tenors and his pride won't allow him to explote his potential... Very Sad indeed. Pathetic!!!
I wonder which was maestro Corelli opinion about this guy singing at his live tribute,he should´ve probably left the building at the point of Cura´s perfomance.
Cura has an imperfect voice. His covered sound is very different from his uncovered sound. He has not been able to integrate his registers so the color of vowels keeps shifting back and forh. His mouth position also changes. Martinucci had this problem too in a much less serious form.
Optimally a tenor's registers should meld so as to allow the instrument to serve the music. Bjoerling or Pavarotti could do this. So could Corelli. Cura can't. He sounds bumpy and the piece loses it's sweep.
the last note is completely f****d up he seems to be scared at the top he truncates top notes if he feels they are not going to work,a very hit and miss singer
What's up with him always turning his back to the audience every time he is to sing finishing high note? He does it quite often whether it's an operatic performance or a recital.
Very good voice, not a very good singer. But this is some of the better singing I have heard from him. Notice that even nine years ago he was bizarrely changing mouth position during a high note. First, he opens wide, and then instantly switches to a narrow mouth position. This shows the inadequacy of his technique. There should be no need to do this.
After 3:00 he begins to stagger around like a drunkard. Well, he was already singing like he was drunk. Like a drunk washed up baritone doing his best impression of a bad tenor. Domingo should have kicked his ass after this!
I have to agree with others who have found this Cura performance as anything but inspiring. Frankly, I find his voice completely uninteresting, if not boring. He also has that little swooping tendency, which is so amateurish.Any teacher or vocal coach should have corrected it long ago.Thumbs down!
Imagine Corelli's wife's list of criticisms for this. I didn't really find much musicality, it didn't come across as a 'beautiful' rendition, more about those scaling/climbing high notes.
dynamic dynamite!

I can't imagine a worse tenor paying tribute to Franco...Jose represents all that is wrong in opera...well almost all

This is not cute. Too arogant for my taste. You can hear it when he sings.

i think he is a natural singer but maybe he has a strong, dry tone and a very "held" sound. exciting/different interpretation.

And also a poor technique. ;) He uses a crutch to keep his brightness at the top, and his voice sounds mal-aligned.
But you're spot on as well.

Horrible. Sounds like an old baritone making a last stab at tenor. The kicker is he's a young man here.
