@goliathlup1 Its far from perfect for anti-piracy. Maybe the small corvette is fast and can get anywhere faster than others. But ships like HDMS Absalon with a helo can easily make up for it.
And due to the size they cant catch that many before they have to return them. And they cant stay in the sea as long as larger ships because they run out of supplies faster
So rule number one. Dont use corvettes for this type of operations.
@goliathlup1 Well corvettes are good - The Swedes got some high tech stealth corvettes - Corvettes are small, and therefore they require a smaller crew and doesnt cost as much to maintance. And they can carry a lot of weapons surprising enough.
Corvettes are very good for coastal defense/anti invasion as Sweden currently is doing. They can be good in battles because of their speed and high manouverable but I doubt they will last long against lager ships
@goliathlup1 Sweden is a neutral country so they dont focus on international operations - they focus on securing their own territory. My country Denmark was like that once, we had a fairly large navy of small vessels. Each ship was a flex ship, a Danish invention that allow a ship to change role in matter of hours. We had 11 Flyvefiskeren class - a very small but cabale ship with lots of firepower. And they could change between 3 roles - so that actually make those 11 ships count to 33ships
@Blackie3391 I'd say it's the other way around nowadays, we put nearly all our focus on international missions and no focus on Sweden itself. If we focused on our own country we would not have abolished conscription but since we focus so much on international missions it is better to have a professional military since a conscript cannot be forced to go on such missions.
@Blackie3391 We haven't been particularly neutral for decades, our invasion defense during the cold war was meant to delay Soviet forces long enough for help from NATO to get here. And a couple of years ago the government made a declaration of solidarity, they stated that we would send help to our neighboring countries in case of a crisis. We are alliance free, but not neutral.

Today we dont have many small ships left. Our 3 old corvettes of I think it was 1.400tons is being replaced with 3 state of the art frigates on 6.600tons
All ships in our navy carry the Flex system and allow all of our ships to change modules/roles/repair in matter of hours. Heard they changed the cannon on one of our ships in 7min
@goliathlup1 If you ask me we should kill them on sight - for every pirate we kill, 10 probaly get scared and give up piracy. And everyship will be effective then. And good practise for the crew - live ammo practise while helping the world
@Blackie3391 HMS Malmö actually managed to capture 7 pirates, and we sent the support ship HMS Trossö together with the two Stockholm class corvettes. Half a year after they returned home we sent down the larger HMS Carlskrona with a displacement of 3800 tonnes compared to 380 tonnes of the corvettes and 2140 tonnes of the Trossö. The HMS Carlskrona also had two HKP 15 (Augusta 109) onboard, the only ship that captured any pirates was the HMS Malmö.
@jimmyn89SWE As much as I like to annoy Swedes (no offense) I still have respect for them - but their tiny corvettes just arent good enough for pirate catching - sure its fast and manuverble, but larger ships have choppers.
Take our Absalon for example (its not to brag, its the only and best example I know) she captured up to 80 pirates on one season once - The chopper she carry are extremly important - many of the pirates she capture are cought by the chopper.
@Blackie3391 Their main task was not to capture pirates. I believe their main task was to escort World Food Programme ships to Somalia and for that task they are sufficient since pirates tend to target ships without protection.

HDMS Absalon always carry a team of frogmen and its usualy them who board other ships - I can recall one episode where they actually had to storm a cargo ship because it had just been captured by pirates and the crew had locked themself in a security room. But when the frogmen searched the ship the pirates had fled (they were cought by a Russian ship later on)

Norway has large ships and Denmark which is a much smaller country has even bigger ships 2 Absalon class of 6.600tons and soon 3 Iver Huitfeldt-class will get launched which has more than twice the power than Absalon - but they weight about the same
@Blackie3391 We probably could get larger ships but where would we get the money to do so? I doubt our defense budget is going to be increased so the money would have to come from somewhere else, like for example disbanding a regiment or canceling projects. Further defense cuts are likely even without buying new ships, we have recently abolished conscription and since a professional military costs more they have talked about disbanding one regiment and one air flotilla.

We have disbanded some lovely ships. But only to be replaced by much larger ships.
For example - our 3 corvettes on 1700tons? are being replaced by 3 frigates on 6.600tons
Our arctic patrol cutters are being replaced by 3 ships of 1.700tons
@Blackie3391 There is a bit of focus on submarines in our navy, there was a project for a new surface ship that was canceled a few years ago but the A26 class submarine is still in development. We have had some success when it comes to exporting submarines in the past so that might be one reason. The navy of Singapore currently uses Archer and Challenger class submarines from Sweden and the Australian collins class is an enlarged version of the Västergötland class.

The flex system is just brilliant - Ive heard they changed the gun on one of our ships in 12minutes because of our flex system. Our small Flyvefisken class can be anything from a missile boat to a mine layer.
Since your subs are that anvanced, isnt it a risk to start exporting it?
@Blackie3391 The current Gotland class is believed the be among the stealthiest subs in the world, the American navy leased the HMS Gotland and crew for one year (they extended it to two years) and it performed quite well from what I've heard. The A26 class is supposed to have improved stealth characteristics and will be ready around 2018, they are also going to upgrade two of our Gotland class submarines. And whether it is a risk to export it or not depends on what nations you export it to.
@jimmyn89SWE I remember that the Gotland class submarine sailed into a carrier battle group in an exercise with the Americans and sunk their carrier and escaped with pictures aswell without being detected. I also remember the Americans became quite upset that a submarine sunk their carrier (even though it was an exercise) without being detected - they were afried that it would fall into the wrong hands (china etc.)
@Blackie3391 Not sure the Chinese need it, a few years back a Chinese Song class submarine supposedly shadowed the USS Kitty Hawk without being detected, it was only detected when it surfaced and by then it was withing firing range.

@ZakariyeXd Operation Atalanta is not a Swedish operation but an EU operation which was launched in support of a number of United Nations Security Council resolutions. And the Somali government has asked for international help to fight piracy in the area, it might also be worth adding that there's a lot of Europeans who aren't too happy about all the Somali people coming to Europe.

@goliathlup1 Well corvettes are good - The Swedes got some high tech stealth corvettes - Corvettes are small, and therefore they require a smaller crew and doesnt cost as much to maintance. And they can carry a lot of weapons surprising enough.
Corvettes are very good for coastal defense/anti invasion as Sweden currently is doing. They can be good in battles because of their speed and high manouverable but I doubt they will last long against lager ships

@goliathlup1 Sweden is a neutral country so they dont focus on international operations - they focus on securing their own territory. My country Denmark was like that once, we had a fairly large navy of small vessels. Each ship was a flex ship, a Danish invention that allow a ship to change role in matter of hours. We had 11 Flyvefiskeren class - a very small but cabale ship with lots of firepower. And they could change between 3 roles - so that actually make those 11 ships count to 33ships

@Blackie3391 I'd say it's the other way around nowadays, we put nearly all our focus on international missions and no focus on Sweden itself. If we focused on our own country we would not have abolished conscription but since we focus so much on international missions it is better to have a professional military since a conscript cannot be forced to go on such missions.

@Blackie3391 We haven't been particularly neutral for decades, our invasion defense during the cold war was meant to delay Soviet forces long enough for help from NATO to get here. And a couple of years ago the government made a declaration of solidarity, they stated that we would send help to our neighboring countries in case of a crisis. We are alliance free, but not neutral.

Today we dont have many small ships left. Our 3 old corvettes of I think it was 1.400tons is being replaced with 3 state of the art frigates on 6.600tons
All ships in our navy carry the Flex system and allow all of our ships to change modules/roles/repair in matter of hours. Heard they changed the cannon on one of our ships in 7min

@Blackie3391 HMS Malmö actually managed to capture 7 pirates, and we sent the support ship HMS Trossö together with the two Stockholm class corvettes. Half a year after they returned home we sent down the larger HMS Carlskrona with a displacement of 3800 tonnes compared to 380 tonnes of the corvettes and 2140 tonnes of the Trossö. The HMS Carlskrona also had two HKP 15 (Augusta 109) onboard, the only ship that captured any pirates was the HMS Malmö.

@jimmyn89SWE As much as I like to annoy Swedes (no offense) I still have respect for them - but their tiny corvettes just arent good enough for pirate catching - sure its fast and manuverble, but larger ships have choppers.
Take our Absalon for example (its not to brag, its the only and best example I know) she captured up to 80 pirates on one season once - The chopper she carry are extremly important - many of the pirates she capture are cought by the chopper.

@Blackie3391 Their main task was not to capture pirates. I believe their main task was to escort World Food Programme ships to Somalia and for that task they are sufficient since pirates tend to target ships without protection.

HMS Carlskrona is a decent ship for capturing pirates even though its very slow. But she carry a helicopter which is important.
The downside is she cant launch any special forces

HDMS Absalon always carry a team of frogmen and its usualy them who board other ships - I can recall one episode where they actually had to storm a cargo ship because it had just been captured by pirates and the crew had locked themself in a security room. But when the frogmen searched the ship the pirates had fled (they were cought by a Russian ship later on)

@jimmyn89SWE If Sweden were focused on international operations they would get some larger ships - I know you have submarines but still. HMS Carlskrona is the second largest ship in the Swedish navy.
Norway has large ships and Denmark which is a much smaller country has even bigger ships 2 Absalon class of 6.600tons and soon 3 Iver Huitfeldt-class will get launched which has more than twice the power than Absalon - but they weight about the same

@Blackie3391 We probably could get larger ships but where would we get the money to do so? I doubt our defense budget is going to be increased so the money would have to come from somewhere else, like for example disbanding a regiment or canceling projects. Further defense cuts are likely even without buying new ships, we have recently abolished conscription and since a professional military costs more they have talked about disbanding one regiment and one air flotilla.

@jimmyn89SWE Guess the submarines are very expensive in maintance then. We removed all our subs from service in 2004 (most NATO countries have subs, why waste money on it? And there is a German sub base right a cross the border)
We have disbanded some lovely ships. But only to be replaced by much larger ships.
For example - our 3 corvettes on 1700tons? are being replaced by 3 frigates on 6.600tons
Our arctic patrol cutters are being replaced by 3 ships of 1.700tons

@Blackie3391 There is a bit of focus on submarines in our navy, there was a project for a new surface ship that was canceled a few years ago but the A26 class submarine is still in development. We have had some success when it comes to exporting submarines in the past so that might be one reason. The navy of Singapore currently uses Archer and Challenger class submarines from Sweden and the Australian collins class is an enlarged version of the Västergötland class.

The flex system is just brilliant - Ive heard they changed the gun on one of our ships in 12minutes because of our flex system. Our small Flyvefisken class can be anything from a missile boat to a mine layer.
Since your subs are that anvanced, isnt it a risk to start exporting it?

@Blackie3391 The current Gotland class is believed the be among the stealthiest subs in the world, the American navy leased the HMS Gotland and crew for one year (they extended it to two years) and it performed quite well from what I've heard. The A26 class is supposed to have improved stealth characteristics and will be ready around 2018, they are also going to upgrade two of our Gotland class submarines. And whether it is a risk to export it or not depends on what nations you export it to.

@jimmyn89SWE I remember that the Gotland class submarine sailed into a carrier battle group in an exercise with the Americans and sunk their carrier and escaped with pictures aswell without being detected. I also remember the Americans became quite upset that a submarine sunk their carrier (even though it was an exercise) without being detected - they were afried that it would fall into the wrong hands (china etc.)

@Blackie3391 Not sure the Chinese need it, a few years back a Chinese Song class submarine supposedly shadowed the USS Kitty Hawk without being detected, it was only detected when it surfaced and by then it was withing firing range.

@ZakariyeXd Operation Atalanta is not a Swedish operation but an EU operation which was launched in support of a number of United Nations Security Council resolutions. And the Somali government has asked for international help to fight piracy in the area, it might also be worth adding that there's a lot of Europeans who aren't too happy about all the Somali people coming to Europe.
