you're great! it's nice that you actually allow people to contact you for help. i've been having a lot of trouble getting my dog to listen to me outside, and i can't wait to try this out at the park!
in that setting its fine, but what if another dog is walking by. Do you think they will still listen? that is the issue I have been having... or someone unfamiliar walking by?
one thing people don,t call your dog to you to punnish him.He doesn,t know what he did wrong esept comming.so that teaches him come is bad news stay away.
So what you are saying is if you call the name, give a treat, they will then always listen to the command and with think there with be more treats right. If thats true thats great. But do you have to "come" at the end?;Good job!
I can see you know what you are talking about. Congratulations.... I am subscribing + buying the book + visiting your website. Please continue your great job!!!
I have 2 5month old puppies that generally come when I call accept when they decide chasing a car is more fun. Once a car passes there is no stopping them! Other than myself running like crazy to catch them...this behavior has just started...gotta nip it in the but! Please help!!!
@karenmacful hey im not a dog trainer but ive watched some stuff on cesar millans dog whisperer show, if u havent seen it then i recommend it to u. have u tried correcting them with the dog bite technique? it doesnt hurt them it just mimics what the mother dog wud do to correct their behaviour. use that when u can see that they are focusing on the cars n try to nip it in the bud before they start to chase. also running after them actually makes them think its a game so that'll only encorage

Q: I have a pit bull puppy and I can't get her to listen to me. Some times she will get outside and take off from me and I have to chase her down. How can I make her listen to me?
Hi, a nice video, thank you! I've got a question acc. to this video....My dog is has got a high level of teachability, but when my boyfriend and I were teaching him to come using a clicker, he preferred to come to one of us who had the clicker, however we both had treats for him....we just stood and called him in turns and I had a clicker. as soon as he approached one of us I clicked, so he happily ran back to me even if my boyfriend called him. What did I do wrong?
I have a six month old springer spaniel hound, will this work with this type of dog? I ask, because he always has his nose to the ground (that would be the hound in him) and is easily distracted by cats, or even people walking by.
@asiansquirl You should start indoors first because it has less distractions. And once he's doing well enough indoors then you can take the training outside .
This is good but try telling your dog to 'come' when you add a dog into the mix. Example- when your dog is off the lead and so is the other persons, this I am having trouble with as I don't know the other person/dog
Thanks for putting this up. I have a new rescue dog that I got Nov. 1, and she's mostly Terrier of some kind and Shiba Inu. She catches a scent at the dog park and doesn't even acknowledge my presence when I'm shouting after her to come. I'll be working on this with her first.
ya the saying "you cant teach an old dog new tricks" is so true with my chihuahua scooby. he is 3 yrs old and thinks he is the alfa dog. he poos and pees in the house no matter how many times we let him out, and when we do let him out he takes off and wont come when called and we cant scoled him cuz he will growl at us my mom eventualy gets tired of it and beats the shiz out of him with her flipflop. so he wont come he wont go potty outside and he eats up all the food so his son doesnt get any
so far today was the first time I saw you on youtube videos on how to train your dog etc. and i think that your a really good trainer. better than the person who hosts the show "its me or the dog" and "dog whisperer" I thank you for becoming a dog trainer because people actually are very thankful for you to be a dog trainer and making videos on youtube to help them. thank you again Eric :)
I will be getting a lab from my aunt (best gift ever!) this Christmas.
The "come" commmand will be one of the first things I would like him to learn. However, I read online on a trainers page that it is not a good idea to teach this command with treats, becase for example, theyre chasing after a squirrel, and you call him to COME he will know he will be getting a treat, but at that particular moment he may be more excited about catching the squirrel not coming back to receive a treat any advise
I have an intact male akita and worry about the same thing. I can have a smoked sausage that he loves, but if he'd rather explore, I can't get him to come back. On the flip side, I remember when I used to train horses as an apprentice. We worked every horse for about 30 minutes a day or every other day. We made them go through the same drills day after day. It wasn't to get them to respond to reward, etc, it was to burn the behavior into their brain and make it quite involuntary.
hiya i have tride this now for my 2 year old springer spanial/collie and he still isnt responding and if there is another dog on the filed he will just shoot of and wont look back is there a way i can stop this from hapening.

You are the best I've seen online, and actually better than the trainers I've met in person as well. Thank you! Your methods are explained well, humane, cautious as they should be when working with animals, and effective. Of course, we owners need some work. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this video I have taught my new puppy to come and her name all in 1 day. Do you have a dvd to help people train there dogs your amazing :)
Yeah but my dog ( its a hotdog, u know the long ones XD ) does not come back and runs away and im afraid he'll go in the forest. And my dog is 2 year old, so how can i teach him ? I couldn't teach him earlier because his adopted and before a i adopted , he was getting beaten by his old owner. I adopted him in the SPCA, can u help me please , my email is artsiom.sk@gmail.com Thank you
What to do when my dog is really interested in something (especially in hot air balloons flying above my house) and I can't call him to come, because he is barking all the time and don't listen to me.
Im getting a dog its 12 months old called stella i want to change the name when i get it how do i go about it so when i say the new name the dog responds?
It's me again w/ the 65 lb AMSTAFF (FURY) - can't get her to obey me when leaving dog parks - she wants to live there! I have had health problems over the past 8 years & she doesnt' get out as much as she or I wld like too. . .
how do i train my neighbors little kids to not confuse my new puppy with the command come? I have tried to explain these principles to them, but they are ruining him, they will get my dog super excited and try to get him to 'come' to 4 different places at once and then yell the command while chasing him.... help?
see i did the same thing but after i stop giving him food (5 times with no food) he stop coming. do i have to have food with me all the time little tip plz
@lockursoulnow Fade out the food gradually. So, food every time, then no food one out of three times, then food half the time etc. Make sure they still get some excitement and affection though so you're still rewarding the behaviour you want. Then, just surprise them once in a while with the food treat. Good luck!
@sem53 You Have to teach stay first. Then Reward your pet. Then You can Teach them the Sit/Stay/Heel. Command by Making them sit and then Walking a distance and giving them the Command to come to you.
My GS puppy is so stubborn, Ive tried treats and other techniques and he is totally oblivious! I am definitely going to try this. I am hoping it works!
Is he going to give free advice or do we have to pay? I have a really problematic pariah dog, and I want to see my options before I'm forced to go to obedience classes.
What a fun training game. I may try this when we have dog groups over. As a coonhound breeder, I train my puppies to the come command by using it every time they are fed. So from 4 wks of age, they associate the come command with a reward. The come command is such a safety issue.
My dog is NOT interested with food when he goes outside. And this only works when we're inside the house. Once he is outside... only when he's being bullied, then he comes beside me for protection!Help.
Exactly. I have found that certain dogs, and especially certain breeds are so independent that they prefer to do what they want , than have the treat. I have terriers and they can be very disobedient. They were bred to work independently, and you have to work with the breed's characteristics.Ignoring the bred in nature of your dog gets you nowhere !
try and look into teaching him boundries, once he knows his boundries he will not go past where you want him to without you. I have a black lab too she got it, i just worked with her on it a lot,
Well how do I set up a boundary? How do you establish that boundary to your dog? Also how do you reward him for staying inside the boundary and how big should I start out the boundary and should I start big and get small or start small get big? Lots of questions I know if you answer a couple of them I will be thankful very much!! CHEERS
i have a boxer she is so hyper and i want to train her how to not be on a leash but still stay around the house we have a fence but ewverytime i let her go she runs off plz help me
You can try exercising her, like taking her on long walks, go jogging with her or play some games with her, until she is tired. Then she will behave no matter if she is on leash or not. She is so hyper because she wants to release all her pent-up energy that hasn't be released. Follow my method and sent a PM to me to tell me whether she has or has not improve on her behavior. You can also ask me any questions on dog behavior or training dogs. I'll try my best to help you if I can.
my first shih-tzu was amazing with these commands and loves to learn ... then we got another shih-tzu now the new one is bugging him and whining whenever we separate them ... is there a way to help them be more independent. the older was born dec 12th and the second feb-ish (my mum takes care of the younger one) so both are around half a year old now.
My dog can do this great... until there's another dog around. Then, all humans are invisible.
After he's played with the other dog (or "asserted his authority"; he's a very dominant dog), then he'll start obeying for treats, again.... until a new dog comes along.
It's good the dog has fun, but what about a situation when there is something really exciting and he just ignores you?..I used to use food as a reward for coming to me, but than i found out it was a big mistake...you can't be a fridge full of nice food, you have to be a master...the dog must come because you want, not because it's exciting...you make amazing videos, but this is a thing i quite don't agree with you...
There are only 3 reasons why your dog isn't "food driven".
1. He's not hungry
2. He's too stressed or anxious or distracted when you train
3. You are using lousy treats. You must let your dog decide what is a valuable reward. I use chicken, baked hot dogs, cheese, baked stew beef (reduced for quick sale at the market). Valuable means no hard crunchy dog kibble or milk bones.
nope, just not interested in any food when we are out walking. He will come when called (on a 26 ft lead), inspect the treat (roast chicken is his fave. indoors) take it just to humor me, drops it and wants to get back to walking. He is calm and happy and very well exercised. I was told huskies are quite different than most domestic dogs and that their prey instincts override these finicky eaters most times.
is it possible to train highly excitable/prey driven jack russell terrier to come???
Anyone had any experience like this???

@sem53 You Have to teach stay first. Then Reward your pet. Then You can Teach them the Sit/Stay/Heel. Command by Making them sit and then Walking a distance and giving them the Command to come to you.
Work on that before you get to this point.

The come command is such a safety issue.

oh thats nice i wanna try this....when my dog gets out of the fence he's pretty hard to get back in

My dog is NOT interested with food when he goes outside. And this only works when we're inside the house. Once he is outside... only when he's being bullied, then he comes beside me for protection!Help.
IWANNAPLAYTENNIS 2 years ago

My dog keeps running away I let him out in the morning and he ran away he is a black Lab about 19 months
bman231 2 years ago
try and look into teaching him boundries, once he knows his boundries he will not go past where you want him to without you. I have a black lab too she got it, i just worked with her on it a lot,
RandomlyChandler 2 years ago
Well how do I set up a boundary? How do you establish that boundary to your dog? Also how do you reward him for staying inside the boundary and how big should I start out the boundary and should I start big and get small or start small get big? Lots of questions I know if you answer a couple of them I will be thankful very much!! CHEERS

i have a boxer she is so hyper and i want to train her how to not be on a leash but still stay around the house we have a fence but ewverytime i let her go she runs off plz help me
drummerboy1029 2 years ago
you have to first teach your dog to behave on a lead before off a lead .. one step at a time
allbreedsdogs 2 years ago 2

Maybe it's because the other dog is more interesting than you?
Andrejolb 2 years ago
My dog can do this great... until there's another dog around. Then, all humans are invisible.
After he's played with the other dog (or "asserted his authority"; he's a very dominant dog), then he'll start obeying for treats, again.... until a new dog comes along.

Is there any way you would be able to do this by yourself without the dog following you? (dog not knowing the stay command)
alife2live4us 2 years ago
It's good the dog has fun, but what about a situation when there is something really exciting and he just ignores you?..I used to use food as a reward for coming to me, but than i found out it was a big mistake...you can't be a fridge full of nice food, you have to be a master...the dog must come because you want, not because it's exciting...you make amazing videos, but this is a thing i quite don't agree with you...

what if your dog isn't food driven?
kimhunter2 2 years ago
There are only 3 reasons why your dog isn't "food driven".
1. He's not hungry
2. He's too stressed or anxious or distracted when you train
3. You are using lousy treats. You must let your dog decide what is a valuable reward. I use chicken, baked hot dogs, cheese, baked stew beef (reduced for quick sale at the market). Valuable means no hard crunchy dog kibble or milk bones.
laurabrody1 2 years ago
nope, just not interested in any food when we are out walking.
