I've seen jazz percussionists use these to good effect, so I've picked up a pro-size one, and ya know what? It's really, really easy to 'play'. But it's really difficult to get dynamic effect out of something that produces only one note. It DOES require some technique, and I figure you can either listen to a recording and then screw around with it until you come close to the effect you want, or watch someone do it and get it right the first time.
