The marketability of it all was that YES, anybody could learn to play. That was the genius of their music... people felt close to them.

Right, this is pretty simple. Its not about the complexity of the music, its about the feel, the rythmn, the groove, the vocals. Take pop music. While I see your point, you can't honestly be saying that it's hard to write an AC/DC song. They're just a distilled version of other stuff out there with a decent guitar player (which is brilliant commercially). Complex isn't necessarrily bad either. Look at Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Hands down the epitome musical intellectual in our time (rivaled only possibly by Frank Zappa), musically and vocally, and quite frankly the only way to aptly describe Steely Dan's music is schizophrenic.
