I'm not front I love the temptations version but the spinners version is just as great and can't understand why Motown wouldn't wanna promote this cut. And even more strange has a history promoting a song more than once with different artist but the spinners version maybe unknown but to me it's a instant classic, I love it.
I have the Temptations' version on "Puzzle People" - bought it when it was out. And, frankly, I can see clearly why the Temptations' version was the one selected for an album. Their version - more intense - really believable. This version is sort of bubble-gumish by comparison.
For some reason the refrain has been "spinning" in my head for months. I barely remembered it as a Temptations cut, and never knew about the Spinners' version. This is a great historical object lesson to pass on to my kids as they listen to Lil Wayne and Akon. Thanks for posting it.
hahaha ferdmert i'm so sick of this little argument, there is a message from the white man, its everywhere, turn the tv you're going to see it, count how many presidents , or people in power all together mostly 90% white, is that a coincidence? ...
checkabreak, you're right, it is every where. Whites are the victim in interracial crimes 85% of the time, Whites are fired from jobs with no reason needed, but you had better have all your i's dotted and t's crossed, if you even think about firing a Black man...Blacks in the media are known as African American since a color term is deemed offensive, however European Americans never get that respect, they are always just known as a color, White. Somehow a color term is just fine for one group.
how many presidents? go look at your self in the mirror and said loud very loud " the reason why white folks get the jobs is because we are better" said it :)
@checkabreak ... funny that you use that example since I am White and have been laid off for over a year trying to get a job. And also your President analysis definitely holds true for Blacks as they would never vote for a White person, if a Black man is running. Just ask Bill Clinton.
give me a break with that bullshit..Everything in America is tilted towards the success of White people..Keep in mind, black people have only been free for about 40 years...Thats it. It kills me to hear white people complain about getting fired from a job for being white..Are you fuggin kidding me.? Try being black for 2 days and see how quickly you'd want to be white again. The ghettos of America are a direct result of racist white America. Save the "Victim" bullshit..Youre not a victim.
Damn! The Spinners did a good job on this one. One of the few jams by them I don't have. I'm jealous! The message still rings very true for those of us who still can't get respectful service in our own neighborhoods from whites. It's their lost not mine. I'll keep rolling on! Great post.
Excellent. The only people who have a problem with it is the folk who don't know nothin' about the Black experience in America. Truth is hurt many folks feelings.
He died yesterday at 2am from Brain and Liver cancer. It was all over the news and if you google his name you'll get the results. He was a good friend. R.I.P. once again Pervis. :(
it is available on cd on a compilation called Change Is Gonna Come The Voice Of Black America available at cd universe (although this may not have been the case when you posted).
I'm a young bass singer myself and Pervis Jackson is my idol/ favorite bass singer of all time! He's still around today, and I had the honor of meeting him! Great guy, and great voice :)
The Tempts version came out in 1969.Motown uses The Temptation version because it's The Temptations song. It might have just been an album track, but this song was good enough to be a hit for The Tempts. The Tempts album tracks are just as good as their hits in alot of cases
Is that the song when it was not appeared on CD? That song was from 1970, two years before they left Motown for Atlantic Records and ended up somewhere in Philadelphia with Producer Thom Bell with songs like "I'll Be Around" and "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love". I've never heard that version before. Thanks!
I've only heard this version once before and I've always wanted to hear it again. I would choose this over The Temptations version, this is simply great. It's funny because The Temptations' version was released in 1968.

If I had to pick which version of this song was best I would have to rank the Tempts first, Spinners second, and Whatnauts third.
