why are these men smart enough to make a car but too stupid to make a decent video? it seems like a requirement that any recording of something big happening needs to be grainy, low-res, and/or out of focus.
One can only imagine the sensory inputs inside a car with three engines solid mounted along with all the other stuff involved. It's an awsome video, what a car.
@67Charger440 If I remember right they are Donovan 417s with a total cu. in. of a little over 900. 453cu. in. each. Car has made about 22 runs all with alchohol fuel, no nitromethane added. 4 wheel drive, 2 Hub City rearends, 2 liberty air shifted 5 speeds, 1 transfer case up front.
@diatoneic Clayton Steen Is my dad. He runs a 4 engined A/FS streamliner top speed 365 (with a total of nine cylinders out) the engines are 515 brodek aluminum engines that run on one circut. The car is 36 feet long, 10,000 pounds and stands about 8 feet high with the rear stabilizer. he runs Mickey Thompson tires. Last time he ran was 2004. The car stays in his shop here in Idaho Falls untill one day we get another wild hair up our asses to go try for the record. Which is now 417 i believe..
What's really cool: when you're there and a streamliner goes by this fast...not just the doppler effect...the DIRECTION of the sound is about a mile behind the car...the car is passing you...but the sound is 45 degrees back...WICKED cool.
wow that has soo much power whatching it go by at top speed on the salt is amazing i was there for the FIA record they just set....i wonder what ever happened to the steens they had that nice 4 engined machine
The car has 2 Donovan CHRYSLERS in it... 8-71s, Crower straightup injectors on Alcohol. Not going to hear too many Chevys sound like that... :) only teasing
Would love to hear this baby screaming, only 250cc.
Stop by Roeder's Harley-Davidson in Monroeville and check out the Bonneville streamliner on display. Powered by a Harley-Davidson 250cc Sprint motor, the streamliner was piloted to a record speed of 177.225 mph by Roeder at the Salt Flats in 1965.
It is stunning to see (and hear) it on video - I think I would have fainted if I had seen it for real. Let's see some more wheel driven V8 passes on here - pretty please?
Love that distanced sort of high revving V8 sound, thats such a unique sound it seems virtually like a NASCAR at full chat, it gives me goosebumps every time i listen to it.
I am the person in the UFFRA that made this video. It went to blue screen after the Holly Shit" because Tom Burkland rolled it trying to slow down! It still looks and sounds just as fast as it was then!!! MaddMike
Actually, Tom did not roll the car on this pass, but we did work till dark to get it out of the mud 12 miles from the start point. You see the airbrake open and shortly after the 1s chute tears off, then the clip ends. The car continued minus chutes for nearly 7 miles past that
That is a bonneville streamliner with 2 blown 450+ cu. in. Donovan Hemis for power. 4000 hp capable on alchohol. This car has the BNI record at 417 mph. This pass was made at approx. 60% throttle position 450 exit speed.
60% throttle. That explains the lack of 'pop' in the Hemi. If you listen carefully, you can hear each piston go through the fire cycle. With a dragster, the sound is more of a 'pop' and the burn cycle is much faster. The burn cycle on these motor's are much slower. I think this has to do with the tuning of the motor's.
I would think that's because of the shape of the Hemi combustion chamber? The Hemi design enables a larger surface for quench and flame travel, right?
Yeah, the Hemi has that 'Pop' sound in the dragsters because if it's design. A lot of people say it is the surface area but I think it is because the sound and pressure get reflected to one focal point. This concentrates the sound and gives it the 'pop' sound. This is what makes it more efficient too. You get the same effect with the 'Penta' Hemis used with overhead 4 valve/cylnder cams like that of the old Indy Offenhauser motors.
This is the Doppler effect. When the car is approaching the sound waves are compressed or the intervals between them diminish. As the car goes by then the soundwaves are essentially stretched relative to the observer, or further apart. So when the car is approaching the sound waves are close together and the exhaust has a different sound, higher pitch, when the car flies by you hear a different sound due to the soundwaves being further apart or a lower pitch.
I would beg to differ... I think this is the Chrysler dual blown alchohol effect. I get the same effect when Al Teague or Fast Freddie go by with a good Blown Fuel/alchohol, Chrysler sound. Nothing else sounds like it.
Sorry but science begs to differ as well. The Dopler is in effect here and will always be in effect whether it is an approaching train, plane, boat, runner, bullet, race car.
There will be some different sounds, granted, due to what you listed however you can not dismiss the laws of physics.
I am not dismissing the laws of physics, I am trying to introduce some humor to your post. I used to audio tape the sounds of cars at Bonneville and am aware of the Doppler affect. Also I have observed various weather phenomena affect the way soundwaves are heard on the flats.
I had to reread your post to see what you where actually hearing. There is some logic involved here as well. From what you said was that Al and Freddie have alcohol blown cars and they sound just like this when they blow by. And now we hear Burklands car which is alcohol and blown and it sounds like the other two alcohol blown cars so there fore they all sond the same so it must be that they are all alcohol and blown. Ummm I have to think about this for a second.
I usually dont have to think when I hear a blown Hemi on whatever fuel, I just enjoy. They have a unique sound, deep gutteral, growling. The Bonneville Salt Flats gives one that loves audio the opportunity to really hear the differences in various types of sound created by a vast array of engine types over a long distance. Even subtle differences in sound between cars with similar engine setups.
