@skeeterjane74 Yes even the unfurred females have a pouch that opens. It developes when they are a few weeks old. However they do not develop teats (there are 4 of them) until they are much older - over a year old.
Thank you for this. I've always wondered what was inside the pouch and wouldn't be satisfied with just a verbal description. Video answered all my questions.
Makes you wonder, being a fetus, if it isn't being painfully burned by the sun and/or air whenever exposed. Imagine popping open a human mother's stomach at the corresponding age and shining a torch at it and saying "look at the fetus, everyone!"
@arounsavell NO torch.......not even hosue lighting.....NO brihgt sunlight, just natural light. We did know what we were doing, and would never have risked these joeys' lives. In fact both grew to adults and became mothers themselves...and no we did not film their joeys because they were mother raised not raised by us. So please give us some credit!! Feeling a bit angry by your comment? Yep because you have looked at one clip and not actually seen what we did achieve.
@gingerntoast wow that makes SO much sense! Babies don't poo in the same way when they're in the womb, otherwise the faeces would poison the baby. When a baby is developing, all the food it gets from it's mothers comes through the umbilical cord as blood which carries energy which helps the baby grow. I guess it's kind of similar for a joey, except they come from the womb when they are very small, then develop fully in the pouch.
Watched this whole series with my daughter yesterday (unit on Kangaroos) and we both absolutely loved it. If I could buy this, I would! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
How did you get you roo to stay still for such a long time to do the filming? I have a female Wallaroo with a joey in the pouch but my female will not let me in her pouch accept for just a second to check the baby.
Both mothers were hand raised by us, and still enjoyed a bottle of milk. So Sadie and Katie would simply lay on the couch beside us, drink their bottles and we would film inside the pouch. We were very lucky they allowed this.
omg aliems :D

GwanThwei 1 month ago
@GwanThwei No only the females.
RooGully 1 month ago
is it painful to the mother to pull the pouch back all the way? and if not, didn't she protest when you did so to film the baby? Just curious.
khoslananya 1 month ago
@khoslananya No, not painful. They would not allow that, they would have moved away from us. We ere very careful.

mmabeers 4 months ago 3
@mmabeers The 'dirt' as you call it is actually the oil secreted from the lining of the pouch.

is i born directly into the pouch or the mother herself puts the joey itn the puch?

@najlu92 Neither. If you watch Kangaroo Birth on our channel you will see it is born normally and climbs to the pouch. Fascinating.

@WWPSdvia This is all explained in a clip further along the series. But can assure you NO poop inside that pouch!!
RooGully 1 year ago
@WWPSdvia But we too when we were in our mothers whom pooped so it isn't much of a difference really.
gingerntoast 1 year ago
@gingerntoast...... we dont go # 2 (poop) in the womb unless something is wrong,,
brandishoogy 1 year ago
@brandishoogy Oh! I got #1 mixed up with #2. Your right, but I don't think a baby kangaroos' #2 isn't bad with bacteria until they get older. Hmmm,
