The reason I like comics like this and The Btaman Strikes! and Superfriends is because they don't show the graphic, sadistic side of villians. I just bought Joker's Asylum: Poison Ivy # 1 and it was the most horrible, graphic, sadistic, voilent version of Poison Ivy I have ever seen! I always saw Ivy as dangerous, but never sadistic or insane. I mean for God's sake she cat a guy into tiny bits with an axe!

Poison Ivy, the mistress of plants, goes on a killing spree and the Batman is helpless to stop her. Her targets are three real estate developers who built houses over a forest she once liked walking through. The clues to the crimes are looking Batman right in his face but the world's greatest detective is apparently on another world since it takes him the whole issue to find the links between the killings.

Of course, Batman is not the hero of this story. Poison Ivy is the hero. No, not just the protagonist. She is the HERO, the good guy. The story makes it clear that her victims are evil because they are fat, middle-aged white males who engage in wicked activities like golf, heterosexual sex, real estate development and sub-prime lending (do the DC writers even understand what sub-prime lending is?)

I'm amazed at how much Dini and Timm got away with in a comic clearly aimed at young children. The shower scene is ofc infamous, but the small details are just as telling: Look at what Harley pulls out of her purse in search for a gun. Not only is there a sanitary napkin and what appears to be a tampon but there is also a condom-package. But what really blew my socks off whas the scene in issue #2, where Ivy has sex with a plant, that was amazingly freaky

Then there is ofc the homo-erotic overtones (the shower scene, the small verbal hints and the fact that Ivy and Harley sleep in the same bed) What amazed me most was that the two loggers in issue #2 were openly identified as being gay. It isn't really much of a secret that Harley and Ivy are bisexual, just look at the christmas special of Batgirl Adventures, but that they openly deal with male homosexuality is both bold and refreshing.

Anyway, this 3 part series ranks as some of the best work by Dini and Timm. It's fun, cute, hot and really involving. Granted, Timms style is very "cartoonish" and the world is very colorful and not at all like the gloomy Gotham we're used to, but it just fit these characters very well.

Like most of the other things it's innuendo. But if you've got the comic, take a good look at it and tell me what you see. It might be, that I'm seeing things that aren't there, but considering the rest of the content, I really can't interpret it anyway else. Who knows, maybe Dini and Timm just wanted to show how close to nature Ivy feels?
