That looks like a fairly recent installation. It's sad that, with the studios hellbent on getting rid of 35mm film as a presentation medium and most theatres now contractually obligated to junk their 35mm equipment when they go digital, all that perfectly good equipment will be destined for the scrapyard. Quite a depressing death sentence for a 100-plus-year-old workhorse of a format.
I used to work for Famous Players from 2002-2004. I became a projectionist in early '04 and held that position until the end of that year (I was 20 when I left.) It's good seeing this video in 2011 to know that some cinemas still show films this way. This video reminds me of my time working in the booth and how much I loved it. I'm a cinema lover and I still consider it to be one of the best jobs I had in my lifetime. It saddens me to know that things are rapidly changing over to digital.
@najix :) it's a great job and yeah many many theaters are going to digital right this year and last year I assume. I work at an AMC theater and my particular one, right now is 10 digital projectors and 10 35mm. So it's quite interesting to see the transition. Fortunately, projectionists still need to be around to operate the "computers" and "ingest" content.
But one day our theater will be all automatic and on a schedule but someone will still need to verify it goes on screen, etc. etc.
From what i have heard we will keep our jobs running the digitals. But I dont know for sure. My theater just got bought by a different company so a lot of things are changing. Oh btw good job on getting your brain calibrated haha
my theater - they are cutting booth hours down to 25 (per week) so it'll be about 2 people running total (at least on hours) and all the operators are going to the floor (I'm looking for a different job)
We still use 35mm in my theater, im a projectionist there. but we are switching to all digital in a couple of months. We use the same platters but use christie projectors.
The fact that 35mm is being thrown out for such a grossly inferior technology is a SHAMEFUL DISGRACE. Theater staff, filmmakers, and moviegoers need to lobby the theater chains to at least KEEP THE PROJECTORS IN THE BUILDING and allow the option for both formats. There is no digital system in existence today that can even approach the contrast, latitude, and resolution that 35mm (if printed optically) is capable of holding. Throwing out film for digital is like throwing out DVD for VHS.
....it was also reported the police found a half-eaten bowl of rice on the floor of the projection booth next to the unconscious projectionist. Police are still looking for leads in the investigation.
When the digital projector is in place which is nothing more than a box with a fan running, shoot a 5:52 sec video of it!. Then watch this one again. Which video was more interesting to put up on YouTube?
well.. i kinf of been working towards this job for a wille now... when i left high school i went in to audio-visual school.. stayed there for 3 years.. after that i used the conection i got in school.. like my teachers since they all worked in the busines... i got oferd an internship on a local TV station... and thats it.. thats how i got where i am.
my job its to keep the channels on the air.. like.. control the continuity of the channels... movies.. comercials.. promos.
Ahhhh amazing. Such a complicated process. But seeing the film in today's world...makes me wonder why all theaters aren't digital already. This looks really old fashioned compared to all innovations and inventions in today's tech world. Great video, I've always wanted to go into a projection room.
@ToastToGo well 35mm film projection is just the tradition and a lot of people love it's feel and look - also film stock has been improving over time and I hear has been compared to 9K resolution or something like that haha.
Anyways - thanks for watching Toast, you are awesome.
From what ive heard the big issue is piracy. The movie studios fear that the more things go digital the easier it will be to copy, leak, or share. Considering a big amount of money comes from new releases, staying with 35mm makes it extremely difficult to make high quality copies. However, they have seen the light and are coming to their senses, most movie theatres within a few years will be all digital, its much easier and cheaper in the long run.
Some of the Barco digital projectors are quite monsterous. The old Christie 35mm's we had were tall and slim, when we got our digital projectors we had to modify some of the pedistals to fit. I must say though the quality of digital far surpasses 35mm. A smoother, crisper, and in most cases brighter image is on screen and most importantly it is much more reliable. You will not have any scratches, dust or bad splices to ruin your movie going experience.
god i hate film, its sad that with todays tech we are still using the same 35mm film our parents watched as kids. uggh, scratched prints, dust, missing cues, broken bearings, ghosting, shadows, overshoots, wraps
No kidding, pressing play and walking away as we say. The best thing is no building or breaking down prints, this saves our theatre tons of time and payroll. Not to mention shipping a hard drive is much cheaper than shipping 70 pound of film accross the country. Also, no mechanical issues to worry about! However, i do find myself missing that chattering noise the intermittents make when running. Hearing only a couple fans kinda creeps me out.
way more complicated than i thought. there's so much stuff going on. i thought it was simply wheel to projector to wheel. the end. that film zig-zagged all over the place!
do they still have to do the changeover every so often? all the movie ive seen still have the cigarette burn in the corner but it looks like what you filmed looks to complicated to do a changeover on
@mister0ldschool all 35mm film do have cigarette burns and most all projectors use and have change overs (although the change over now-a-days are only used to block light and not to "change over" to the next reel (platters systems made that obsolete).
I totally got a job at a theater just so I could learn projection... Unfortunately its a management position and we are getting rid of some of the 35mm projectors soon... I'm trying to make manager as fast as possible. :P
I've threaded our film projector 6 times in 3 years muahaha... We've been digital for 10 years and soon we should have a 3D projector too :) can't wait for black ops on that!
