I believe that the shield used during non-zord battle scenes is a soft material where as the shield we see here is similar to zeo gold's shield. (Rigid and probably very cumbersome.)

because the suit where he takes off his helmet is American made and the shield looks incredibly flappy.. The original Japanese suit makes the shield more metallic looking.
