Perhaps the presumably negatively charged comet came into contact with the E field of the prominence, and sufficiently detuned the system enough to cause collapse of the source magnetic dipole, triggering the CME. This would be analogous to the detuning of a resonant LC circuit by introducing capacitive coupling to a human hand, for example.
