I am not proud of this, but a long long time ago I fancied myself as a bit of a hard case as a Leeds Utd skin. We had gone to watch Leeds play at Old Trafford. I was with a gang of around 15 in Manchester. We were chased by another gang of around 50 plus Man U fans. Everybody shouted stick together as they ran down a side street to escape. I was the only 1 who took an alternate direction knowing the Manchester pack were more likely to "hunt" the largest group & that it was easier to hide solo.

It's very interesting. I saw a similar experiment. An test subject and a bunch of actors were in a room and smoke was sent into the room and then a smoke alarm was sounded. All the actors ignored the smoke and the alarm and so did the test subjects. Back when we were hunting woolley mammoths the heard mentality was good, it's not anymore. But people still follow it.

If this was me, I wouldnt have said the incorrect answer just to fit in with the group. I'd have argued the toss every time. But then again, I support the BNP so its obviously in my nature to fight for what I believe is right, regardless of what other people think.

Sad sad sad. I have known about this experiment for years, could see the video thousands of times more but still be absolutely vexed and saddened that people can be made to function like this.

And yes, to a level we're all 'social' creatures, but this conformity effect is always (and predictably) much higher in purely brainwashed societies, like ours. Societies where you're hammered into groupthink and conformity from the cradle on.
