Operation Meetinghouse on March 9-10 1945 wiped out 16 square miles of the city and killed over 100,000 people. In total almost 50% of Tokyo was destroyed by August of that year. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaski had remained "pure" so that the total effects of the bomb could be recorded. Dropping it over Tokyo would not have netted the same type of information.

@Narre5 I am a firm believer that had the atom bomb not been used in early August 1945 that an invasion of the Japanese Home Islands would have begun in November of that year. While what happened to the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was both horrible and tragic, an invasion would have caused the deaths of millions of individuals, both soldiers and civillians.In my opinion at least, the bombs were a necessary evil which in the long term saved countless lives.

I do respect your opinion and of course it does make sense, I'm not arguing against that. I just think it's incredibly wrong to use nuclear weapons against civilian cities. I'm not saying that USA is the only ones who ever concidered doing it, several countries do (and still does), I just don't like how alot of americans refuse to see the bad and evil side of the hiroshima and nagasaki bombings.

@Narre5 I cannot argue against you, and you make several valid points that I can appreciate. In today's world yes, looking back, it was terrible to use weapons like these on helpless civillians. But if you put your mind in the heads of the U.S. high command at this time, they were trying to end the war as quickly as possible with as few U.S. casualties as possible. The atom bomb fit the bill in that situation.

I don't believe that they understand the horrors that these helpless people experienced at and around ground zero. @Valeman31 They were not military bases. There were military in hiroshima because there was a harbor there and they were afraid the americans would attack, but the cities themself were 100% civilian. You saying that you should've dropped them over Tokyo killing even more innocent civilians only makes you look really fucking retarded after saying the Japs were evil for "planning" to bomb LA or such. @Valeman31 Tokyo wasnt bombed with atomic weapons because it had already been devasted by air attacks earlier in the year. Operation Meetinghouse on March 9-10 1945 wiped out 16 square miles of the city and killed over 100,000 people. In total almost 50% of Tokyo was destroyed by August of that year. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaski had remained "pure" so that the total effects of the bomb could be recorded. Dropping it over Tokyo would not have netted the same type of information.

One major effect of the atomic bombs was that it shocked the Japanese and sent the message of "we can destroy any of your cities in the blink of an eye". This shock was a major reason for the Japanese capitulation, among others
