retting is the process of breaking down the hard outer shell, exposing the core fibres. We do that by simply leaving the swaths to "decompose" for a few weeks before bailing. Then, we simply bale it up... Usually round bales here for bedding, but we can square-bale it too in 14" x 18" x 3' - 5' bales.

Hmmm... don't have any issues at all on ours. No chains, just paddles.
We make sure to keep them perfectly in time, and keep the rubbers fresh.
