He does start off a bit cold and slightly off, but after a bit he drops into the pocket...he's picking and strummin on a ventures reissue jazz bass with a percussive rythmic surf bass style teh Ventures helped create. After the first bit his playing is spot on...
Still have my 30 plus Venture albums, some in HiFi and then Stereo when I made up one. Mounted a 20 inch theater speaker to my bed frame slats to feel Pipeline. Love them bed shaking numbers.
I was born in 1949 and I played in R&R band and cut sevreal albums, backed up national acts. The FIRST song I ever learned to play was WALK DON"T RUN and I love that song as much as I did in 1960! Max Rushmore
as a guitar player who was born in the 60's I have to say I somehow overlooked these guys even though I heard these songs from time to time on the radio etc. It was cool to watch a bunch of songs of theirs here in the new millinia FINALLY! and find out who they were and realize those songs I always heard but never knew the musicians.
The Rhythm Guitarist is Don Wilson and he and the bassist Bob Bogle started The Ventures. His so-called heavy hand is part of their famous "Driving Guitar" sound which he and Bob created.
I have actually read all of the threads on all of The Ventures posts. I found the ones from "davelidia" and you should listen to him. He was (is) correct in so many ways. Apparently you two are much older than I.
I think your comments are valid as The Shadows front man Hank Marvin seems to be an entity of his own and seems to be 'the face' of The Shadows. Bruce Welch and Brian Bennett, everybit as good are really in the shadows (pardon the pun)
Thanks for the reply. To give a balanced view on the Ventures they have a very strong(if not over bearing) rhythm guitarist. This contrasts with Bruce Welch of the Shadows who is famed for his 'economic' use of rhythm. Saying that, I was impressed by Bruce's enhanced style in their 'Final Tour' 2004 DVD.
It's the same group that has been playing together since the early 60s (or late 60s in Gerry McGee's case). In this video it's Bob Bogle on Bass and Gerry on lead. Nokie Edwards is their original lead... well actually Bob Bogle was, but he switched to bass... and Nokie and Gerry both play bass sometimes and Bob still plays lead on some... and then there's Bob Spalding, who tours with them playing bass and occasional lead... ok I can see how you're confused.
From everything I've heard about the band, they've managed to stay together by putting egos aside, so there's no conflict. They just have several members that can play lead and bass. Don Wilson is an excellent rhythm gutarist with a frantic, sometimes ska influenced style. In Japan he is known as "Teketeke-san" for his trademark style.
thank you sooooo much for posting this, I listened to the ventures in my dads record collection and loved them (when I was ten years old)I`m now 40, and they`re still Brilliant!!
I'm 52, and I remember my first band (The Rejects) cutting our teeth on all the Ventures hits. I've never seen any recent video of them. What a joy! And damn if those old pros sound fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing!
i know NOKIE ....he is prodigy...genius ..innovator ....you name it he can play it ...very very underated ..can play like CHET ATKINS AND JERRY REED IF HE WANTS TO ...I'VE SET NEXT TO HIM AND WATCHED HIM ..this is simple stuff ...never looks at the fretboard when he plays ...gerry is good but i think NOKIE never has shown how much he does know ..very humble man ...
I have been lisitening to their music all my life and this is the first time watch them performing....of course thru YouTube. Gives me goose pimples...really great, will definitely run the clip again. Thanks for sharing !
The original Ventures were Bob Bogle and Don Wilson. Howie Johnson (drums), and Nokie Edwards (bass) were added later. Howie Johnson had a car wreck and had to quit the group. Bob and Nokie began swapping lead and bass guitar duties. Nokie left in the late sixties, and Gerry McGee replaced him. Nokie and Gerry tend to take turns playing in the group.
I had no idea the Ventures were still playing. They were the first band I ever really enjoyed. It's great to see the 3 original guitar players. They are still the greatest!!!

The Rhythm Guitarist seems very heavy handed.

Now that is a civil response. You really must try harder to answer like this in future. Thank you Dave!

Can't keep pace with just who is Lead Guitar in this band. Different face each time I view 'The Ventures'.
