Phenomenal! A VERY helpful tutorial. I'm about to add strings to a song I'm recording for someone and I had NO idea how to do it...not being a keyboard player isn't going to help much either though. But this has given me hope that I can maybe create something passable. Many many thanks!
I like this video but I would love to see a lot more of them. Do you intend to give us further assistence? It would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
@TheNuncFluens Its a very common chord progression so it should sound familiar. To me it sounds like 'Fly me to the Moon', which also sounds like I will survive :-D
This is very nice but... The wall you hit is when you want to create a counter melody or real melodies behind the main voice. Heard the Simon Hale arrangements for incognito? That's what I\d like to write. Just toying around with the harmony can get you so far.. Very good starting point though.

@alobosk Exactly! Responding to the harmony is a good start I reckon but in many cases you need to also work round the existing melodies. The Incognito arrangements are a great example. I'm going to have a go at a video about working with melodies some time!
This is great. I was having real trouble writing parts for a Violin and Cello, but now I feel inspired or at least have a direction I can head in. Thanks a lot.
@vazkopl There are plenty of virtual string libraries. I've got East West but LASS is brilliant if you can afford it. A cheap alternative is Garritan.
Although, personally, I dislike this way of composing music, I enjoy very much how you make clear what most beginners (me included) tend to forget: That the harmony is just as important as the melody.
@Dread098 Yeah, you're right! With the samples it doesn't work great! I think played with real instruments (or at least a bit of automation for dynamics) it would work better.
What samples would most producers use, considering they don't have access to orchestras?
Also with regards realism to proper string writing..i.e. respecting how they are played in a real situation..would you recommend any books, background reading?
Now you say you're using Logic...is there a particular instrument/synthesizer you use, or did you sample the string sounds yourself? (And if so, you're using the ESX24, I presume?)
Hi - I'm just using a standard pad string preset in the ESX24 for this (Logic 8). For recordings I use live instruments and the East West sample library.
wow!... really respect artists who take time out to share their knowledge.... much appreciated.. thank you - Vin from India

@Fero631 So, which way do you prefer? I'm just curious :0
nando1407 10 months ago
@nando1407 The good ol' pen-and-paper way. It trains your inner hearing and makes you really think about what you are doing.
Fero631 10 months ago
@nando1407 A bit of both! But I'd be stuck without pencil and paper!
