  • I've seen these traffic signal timers in Chongqing, China. Very cool, I think.

  • The paradox is that these are used in Taiwan, where it is especially dangerous to be a pedestrian! Red-light running is fairly common.

  • 05 seconds left.

    *cars aerate*

  • The traffic lights in Chaiyi City no longer do green light count down, cuz the Taiwan government says green light counting are dangerous!! that sucks

  • we need these redlights on ALL american roads which currently have a red light!

  • I live in Canada. In Canada is different traffic lights.

  • they also have these in indonesia :P ive seen them there

  • welcome to Tartu. Estonia. we have traffic lights with countdown clock :D

    I´m just say´n

  • @rentsikas

same in Tbilisi. Greatings to Estonia ;-))))

  • stoplight on a TIMER?

  • this is like a promotion for street races.

  • That is bad idea, peeps in pennsylvania drive like idiots(I live in pa i should know). And they already run lights, so I just see that adding to the problem, and costing the already over taxed masses more money.

  • Get rid of traffic lights altogether!

  • Actuated lights do not know ahead of time when they are going to change, or even to which phase they will change to next. They change as soon as the approach with the green runs out of cars.

  • that would make street racing much easier

  • That's a pretty smart idea. Over here, in Chicago, we just have timers for when the ped light is gonna change, but nothin for the actual light, except in the heart of DT Chicago.

  • This looks dangerous to me. The driver must never be told to get ready for the green.

  • why do you say that?

  • because the drivers will floor it the second the countdown hits zero, which is dangerous because there could be a red light runner or a pedestrian still crossing the street

  • i understand what you ean but people can still essentially know when the light will be green from the other lights and the pedestrian countdown and such.

  • lights aren't on timers so you cant count down

  • @wilis555 but the other people would know that when there is 5 seconds or less of the green light, not to go, but yeah, where did the yellow go? last 5 seconds should be yellow.

  • @wilis555

just because it counts down doesnt mean you are going to floor it. It also would help stop potential red light runners because it counts down the length of green light so they would be able to tell from a distance away whether or not they would be able to make it.

  • that may be but the count down for the green is a good idea so drivers know weather to stop or continue

  • wooohooo Taiwan

  • I totally agree Jack it

  • those are so cool, it reminds me of those pedestrian signal countdown lights!

  • I totally agree! I love traffic signals too! Thanks for subbing..I did the same! :) Jack

  • OK, WHERE WAS THIS SIGNAL?

  • In a city called Chiayi in south-central Taiwan.

  • I want one of those.

  • That would be great for drag racing!

  • lmao. great idea

  • those are some kickass signals! they should be everywhere!!!!!

  • Looks like the perfect way to reduce accidents, but it looks a little expensive...

  • traffic lights suck, roundabouts are much better at keeping the traffic moving. there is a set of lights right outside my work that cause huge hold ups! if it was a rounabout there instead it would be less of a nightmare. Plus Roundabouts dont need electricity

  • They're fine on quaint little side streets, and perhaps even on slightly larger thoroughfares, but I doubt a roundabout could function on 5-lane each direction Taiwanese road like this was on.

  • well i couldnt see the road in question as you just showed the lights. But i have driven on 3 lane roundabouts in the uk and they work better than traffic lights at keeping the traffic moving. Its not very often i have to que on a roundabout, but every time i come to a set of lights i have to stop!

  • Roundabouts are fine - until all the entrance lanes are busy, then they get congested and no-one moves. That's why we have signal-controlled roundabouts (in the UK).

I like this Taiwanese traffic light! But it's likely to be far too expensive for general use in the UK...

  • I find most holdups on roundabouts in my area are due to traffic lights on the exit roads. exit roads with only a roundabout at the other end tend not to get stuck up nearly as much in my experience.

  • @fusionpatrol here in chile there is a roundabout in most big roads. not 5 each direction roads, but they work very well on 3 and 4 lane each direction roads. the only time they dont work too well is on little busy streets. but the 4 lane roads that it does work on are some of the busiest roads in chile.

  • Buddy, you need to go to see a good doctor

because traffic lights save your life and get

    you across the road quicker.

  • @MrTard I think you should look up a video on the roundabout in paris that goes around the grand arch..... what do you people say? yae or nae?

  • @MrTard

Fuck that, I drove in DC a few years ago and the traffic ciricles were miserable. You can have them.

  • What a odd looking traffic light signal.

    No offence.

  • this is a good way to prevent accidents people running red lights

    5 stars!

  • Where was that? That is actually a pretty good idea! We have this in America, but only with the pedestrian signals which are usually insync with the road lights.

  • Taiwan

  • yes, like the Taiwan traffic lights!

  • Bah, I live in the DOminican Republic, Here we have blackouts everyday because nobody pays the electric bill or just wires up illeagaly to the posts.... stoplights go off and you wonder why they even put them there in the first place

  • I'm only really familiar with Australian traffic lights and here if there is no traffic over the sensor for 5 seconds, the lights change to red. But if traffic keeps coming, the light might stay green for a minute or two, depending of programming or communications from other intersections. Countdown timers are pretty difficult to use in such circumstances. Doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see anyone try it though. :)

  • Good point.

However, it wouldn't take much of a bit of programming to make a hybrid system. The countdown isn't there until the system begins the rollover cycle, and it would still give more information to the driver about when the yellow light is coming.

  • True, but but if the countdown doesn't start for 20 - 30 seconds, and then only counts down the final 5 - 10 seconds, is it worth going to the trouble of installing it?

  • The reason not all traffic lights can incorporate these timers is simply because the time is variable. The lights cycle on demand using sensors in the road. In Taiwan and other places where signals are on fixed timers, it is easy to use timers. The downside is that the lights change even when there is no other traffic around.

  • Dont know what is - a bird maybe???? at the 8 second mark

  • OMG, did you see the rod fly by?!?
