How long have you been playing the guitar and singing? I'd hate to insult you so please don't take this the wrong way if you HAVE been doing both for a long time, but i feel like you need more experience doing both at the same time. Your strumming (especially at the beginning, maybe you just hadn't gotten into it yet) seemed a little sporadic and not even. Also the you change the strumming pattern, which normally is harmless, but it made the song sound... so much less unique and bland.

On the other hand you have a naturally good voice, which is very pleasant on the ears. It seemed like you were singing kind of soft, which fit in with how you were playing the song, but again, the way you were playing it made it sound kind of bland and generic... and neutral milk hotel is definitely not that. Anyways my point is don't be afraid to sing with a fuller voice. Singing with a fuller voice will add more character to your tone, and that is how any singer can get distinguished after all
