Does your kickstart clear your rearsets ok? I want to do something similar to my '77 KZ400 but I'm pretty sure I'll have to modify the heck out of the kickstart to do it.
The advantage of 2 into 1 is that one exhaust flow helps scavenge the other buy creating a vacuum in the exhaust...this helps the exhaust by pulling the exhaust from another cylinder...this is why you get more RPM's.
If each cylinder is independent and on it's own pipe, the exhaust only has the piston to push out the spent gases...this setup is good for lower power RPM range but will suffer in the upper RPM.
This is why a 2-1 or a 4-2-1 exhaust sounds and performs better, it's a proven fact!
@rancheroman1961 sounds like a logical idea. But Lets say I like the dual exhaust styling. What would happen if I had a two cylinder engine with a 2-1-2 exhaust? would I get the vacuum effect from the joined exhaust section with the clean dual look? And what about 4-4 exhausts? I've noticed they're usually like 4-2-4 or 4-1-4.
open headers are a dumb idea. too loud and sounds too metalic.
you want to have at least a 20 inch header. two into 1 makes good power over a nice range, 2 into 2 makes more power but has a shorter range.
best idea would be a 2 into 1 that continues for another 20 inches or so after the collector. or a 2 into 2 with dual megaphones that open up to about 3.5 inches, with a reverse cone on the end.
@bikercc reread my comment... 2-1 makes good power over most of the RPM range... 2 into 2 makes more power at higher RPMS, but there is almost always a loss at lower RPMS. truth is you can make either system work well as long as you have the length of the pipes correct. on these bikes anything around 45 inches total length (from head to end of the exhaust) makes good power unless if your racing.

Becarefull of header wraps, they can crack your headers if they are not ceramic coated.

i am interested in running a similar setup on my cb350. someone told me that running an open header can damage the valves, any input would be great.

@Transane what do you mean about 2-1 headers make good power at high range, is that like at higher rpms they are smoother and give more horsepower?
