Thank you so much for sharing your story Stephen. I am in an accelerated BSN program and we have to take ATI exams every term that have to be passed with a level 2. I have been in the program for a year, set to graduate in May, but just failed my first ATI exam with a level 1. It is in Med/Surg 2. I only failed by one or 2 points. I have one more chance to take the exam in 2 weeks and I am panicking because if I don't pass, I fail the entire course, even with a a possible B after finals.
@fgreen67 These ATI exams are national exams that my school uses to make sure we are on the same level with other nursing students throughout the country and to prepare us for NCLEX. My school is big on keeping their upper 90s pass rate. Worse case scenario, I can retake the course once more next year when it's offered again but if you fail any class again, you are out of the program, even if you are $30K into it. So I'm going to get off YT and go study now but thanks for the inspiration.
Truly inspirational. As a nursing student myself -I have felt exactly what you went through. I have another 1.5 year left for my BSN. I will watch your video when I ever doubt myself. Thank you!
Wow, Stephen, I admire your perseverance. This is such an inspirational story!! Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful/tough time in your life.
that is really touching!!! I am on my way to prepare for one supplementary exam in my last semester next Thursday and I believe I can graduate successfully and register as an RN in Australia. Nothing will stop my will to become a RN. Thanks for your sharing your stories Stephen.HAPPY NEW YEAR !
Thanks for posting this video, I really liked it....one of the best nursing video I have watched so far. It was like you were talking to me personally because I have failed and withdrawn my prerequisites five years ago and when I came back spring 2011 to school I started getting A because I realized Nursing is what I wanted to do. What helped me get a better grade was I also changed my learning style.
This video is gonna help a lot of people. I struggled through nursing school as well. However, I feel that I am a great nurse and that one's grades do not determine the type of nurse one becomes.
@sandra02111978 - That is my wish for this video to help others facing similar situations. I agree with you. Like @GraceAnnHawkins said, some of the best nurses are the ones that didn't do awesome in school. Thanks for the comment!
@GraceAnnHawkins - You know, I really respect that instructor. Her comments really pushed me harder into nursing. Without that "push", I don't know if I would have had the strength to keep going. When I got my BSN, she was one of the first to congratulate me. But I TOTALLY agree with you. Some of the best nurses are the ones who weren't straight A students in school. Some of those people I wouldn't want touching me with a 10-foot pole! Thanks for your comment. It means a lot to me! :)
oh my god you are such an inspiration to not only me but so many people who just feel like being a nurse is just not an option for them any more congratulations and i aspire to get my bachlor's in nursing school as well
@1awkwardgirl - Shoot for your Bachelors! There is always an option to be a nurse if you are called to be one. While others may try to keep you down, remember, there are some of us who will always be on your side!
SO nice to hear your struggles and to know you pressed on!!! AWESOME. Oh, but the bummer with my program? You HAVE to have a 'B' to get into the program and maintain it while in the program. It's a good thing and a bad thing. Especially for someone like me, who SUCKS at testing. I'm a smart broad, but I get "test anxiety" I think
@CherryPi314 - Maintaining a "B" in nursing school is a very difficult thing to do...but it is still do-able. I hated testing also. Test anxiety was horrible for me until I found out what my learning style was. Once I found that out...I had (somewhat) less anxiety. Go look at my personal page for learning styles if you are interested!
what a moving story! thank you for sharing! I am always down on myself when i get poor grades. I have a question for you, when you were doing poorly, were you still studying countless hours? what did you do that got made you become an A student? i am wondering where i could improve also and maybe you could do a video on your study tips!
@sassybabie - When I was doing poorly, I got to the point where I didn't study because I knew that I wasn't going to pass, so there was no need for me to study. I had to get out of this "funk" and purposefully set aside time to study. I didn't go overboard. I changed how I studied. I questioned everything like "How would this affect the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, etc" and "What would a nurse do in the same situation."
Stephen!! This is an excellent video. This video is so inspirational and will help so many nursing school students and non nursing school students to follow their dream and not listen to the negativity. Thanks for sharing your story. Glad you have accomplished your dream of being a nurse.
Thank you so much for this inspiring video. It helps me because there are times in nursing school when I don't do as well as I want to and wonder if I'm capable of being a good nurse someday. You proved people wrong and now you are successful. Best of luck in all that you pursue.
@TheStyleNurse - You are capable of doing it all! Just never get to that place where you think you can't accomplish it. Once you reach that point, it is hard to get away from it.
@2thcr8z - Like my Pediatrics semester, after I took the 3rd-4th tests, I would see all my friends wanting to know how I did. I would feel ashamed and held a grudge against them for a while. Keep your faith. You still have a purpose that is not revealed yet. Don't give up hope.
I was born to be a nurse and sometimes I get down on myself for my grades. I am my toughest critic, but i will be a nurse. If your heart is in it then u will be the best. Nursing needs more people like u AND ME! : )
OMG thank you thank you thank you for keeping it real.
I just finished 3rd semester, and guess what? I failed Med Surg/ICU :(
I knew by the 3rd failed test I was in trouble, I cried my heart out. 4th test was my redemption time, it did not happen. There was no chance of passing now, but I kept on going till the end. I spent countless nights studying, even though I knew I would not pass. The only thing that kept me going was my faith. I know my God has bigger and better plans for me.
@2thcr8z everyone in my study group passed but me. I just didnt understand, we knew the same stuff tested each other and were ready for testing, yet I failed time after time. I finally had to accept defeat, humble myself and give it to God. I know there is a reason for me failing, IDK what that reason is, I should have passed as much as I studied. But I was able to move on, let go and let God. I will be a nurse someday, I know this. But it will be In Gods time, not mine.
@NurseBrownSkin - Thanks Ty for your comment. I know several people could be experiencing what happened to me each semester around this time of the year. I just wanted people to know they are not alone.
NSte! I love the fact that you made a video of such because I know there will be trying times going through nursing school and all I have to do is come to this vlog for encouragement and I know the others may feel the same way. You rock.edu!
Okay....so first and foremost, this video gave me a strong feeling of inspiration! I have a very slow computer and I have not been able to do anything on my laptop, but this has been the first comment that I have left since I got it up and running. This was a GREAT video!! You kicked the new week off on a awesome start. I was in tears with this one...you went deep on this and I truly commend you. I have watched this video on this channel your ur personal channel and it is truly my favorite!!
@MrsJNaz - Thanks for the comment. I spoke with an instructor and we found out that I learn the best as an auditory learner...so I recorded lectures and just re-listened to the lectures over and over until I learned the information.
What a great inspirational video! I have a couple friends who are on the cuff of failing our first semester of nursing school and it is very emotional. Thanks for this video! What did you do to pick your grades up??
@tasha75670 - You have the right mindset. While I had a lot of very motivating instructors, a small few were harsh towards me. Just keep your spirits up and don't let them tell you that you cannot do it. Good luck in your pre-reqs!
@jms2183 - I remember that feeling of having to make a certain grade to pass. Good luck on your test Monday. I will be remember you and wishing for the best! Thanks for sharing the video!
