This was much needed in todays arts thank you for posting your words of wisdom is so true, sadly many students and those who train in your arts never come to realize this.
This gentleman speaks from wisdom..and experience..I'd like to add the best martial art defence is; "common sense"...without that, whatever you do; " wo'nt matter or make a difference"...
Awesome... This man speaks the truth and tells you straight up. Also there is the same amount of politics in karate and other arts... Ive been a member/student of many. Thumbs up for this video.
Best martial art for gun/knife defence is Krav Maga. No exceptions to this.
I train in Wing Chun and I agree with this man for the most. Everybody's journey in Martial arts is their own. Their is always somebody better than you and again always someone worse. The best thing is to practice, practice, practice. Be the best you can be so you can be proud of yourself.
@mrascoop ...also, to be honest, there's 1 thing i don't agree with. if someone pulls a knife on me, i would run away as fast as i can even if i was ip man himself! all it takes is 1 small mistake & ur life is over. but i'm assuming u meant if ur cornered by a weapon. anyway, great video.
@mrascoop: Because he's an embittered old man who bitches on the Internet about MA-politics, pointing out how one should not be bitching on the Internet about MA-politics. Plus, he babbles out stuff like:
"That form is totally a little bit different, but it's basically the same"
"the way you practice is the way you're gonna train"
And then he rambles on about instructors seemingly being "too fat", plus something about Vietnam, which I can't possibly put into perspective.
someone pulls a knife on me i would be surprised and disappointed that i let myself get into that situation. same with a gun but, the last time i had a weapon trained on me i was like this is some old bullshit. i wasnt scared, i was....resigned and humored. when that happens you dont have time to fear unless the person has the intent and you could read that coming of them. then its all adrenalin and animal response. thats when your training kicks in if its been drilled. some can do it, some cant
Thank You for your service! I agree with the whole thing except about it being simple. It is about as simple as E=mc2 or photosynthesis. Yes the Chun is plain and direct, but teaching it and keeping it perfect takes books and other not-so-simple stuff.
I agree with everything that he says the sifu-i teach wing Chun 13 years and practicing only 18 and I have seen is a great scholar of great masters who only want to enter the pocket of the disciples, saying big words for who they are and how well they do- I'm 49 and practice 39 and believe that no one was saying the truth- that everyone want to show of
This applies to so many martial arts these days. Train hard and train well. Far to many masters, soke's and the like these days. All with the pot belly that goes with the title too. Well said sifu.
Politics only happened amongst chinese people. Everything you described is not exclusive but mostly revolves around chinese practitioners. I would know, I'm chinese and every master that I've seen talk like how you describe it. Just like in Ip Man 2 with the round table ceremony...the guy was all like, "When I was younger, I fought in many of these, it wasn't only chairs, it were chairs strapped with knives." They spew nonsense and act arrogant. Good video.
The science is pure, and the politics taints it. Just train and when you understand the principles...advance it. To hell with what others think. Bruce Lee didn't care. He was just one of many that saw further than the "classical mess" of the martial arts in general. Meaning the politics of any art, whatever it is.
This is a great speech, many true words here. But I had that epiphany more than ten years ago and left the whole WIng Chun cult. Nothing left from those days in my arsenal except the straight blast. Doing MMA, RBSD now. Real fighting, training with people who fight and teach what they learn from it. Simple AS THAT.
Well said ! It is really up to the individual's desire to learn and to improves oneself; mentally and physically. It is a long journey, but certainly a worthwhile pursuit ! just enjoy Wing Chun and do away with the politics.
Sifu Richard. You are very greatest intructor. Teaching martial art for seft respect and humble. I'm totally agreed what you said. Be reliaty and live. respect Sifu richard. Thanks
THANK YOU !!!! I've been a bouncer for 17 years in some bad spots and have been under some real stress and I get a kick out of some of these guys That never leave the dojo . Everything you said was absolute truth .. Im a instructor in Commando Krav Maga and instruct in a few different Kali styles. I have been training in Wing Chun for about 6 years . Wing Chun has been one of the most useful arts Ive ever used to defend myself .. Train hard for 20 years to survive 20 secs ...
However, my suggestion is that you don't come in with preconceived bs which precludes you from learning. Also, do some Muay Thai or BJJ agains't opponents who want to beat the crap out of you, and you will understand what Sifu Guerra is talking about. Hopefully, you never get attacked (I've been attacked and got into real fights) in your life, but arm chair quarterbacking is b.s.
Also, do some gun/knife training, and you will really see where you are...
Hi All...if you cross train in multiple martial arts, you will see schools that spar, and those that don't. Learn what you can from each, yes, some are better than others, but even those that may not be that good at "real fighting" you can learn some stuff that you can make work in a real fight. No need to criticize the school, just learn what you want and move on.
FINALLY... someone is talkin REALLY TRUE WORDS... in Turkey it is almost NORMAL that u r getting attacked by at least 2 or 3 guys. And it is also normal... that 1 has either a stick or something else cutty in his hand!!! U really forget MANYA MANY things... combinations and so on... --> All you have...is your good instinct (time to run!) automized reflexes... speed and punch and STAMINA. SELF confidence in front of a knife... comes with time. -> NO i am not a MA expert..
This was much needed in todays arts thank you for posting your words of wisdom is so true, sadly many students and those who train in your arts never come to realize this.

Finally, someone in Wing Chun that makes sense...stop the infighting between schools, and on you tube which makes Wing Chun look petty, and start
training Students on how to really defend themselves in a fight....
All the forms and all the training is only good if trained realistically, and you gotta have sparring...
Sifu Guerra speaks the truth...
